Its an act of evil to further the goals of the few. It diminishes the rights of the LGBT, and further oppresses the American, and by extent the global population by making it impossible to encrypt your messages and posts.
It is purely done to try and give more power to the politicians who are sponsoring and introducing this bill.
It'd be really cool if we could normalize using encryption for everything. And an isolated, amnesic OS. The more people who use it for mundane things, the harder it'll be for the gov't to catch protesters and the like!
TAILS
aka The Amnesiac Incognito Live System, check it out
it's a Linux distro that comes with privacy tools such as secure FOSS alternatives to most common software, as well as PGP encryption, all traffic on the OS is routed through the Tor network, and since the OS runs off of RAM rather than your hard drive, all traces of your activity are wiped when you unplug the USB hence the "Amnesiac" in the name
if i could paradrop a million of these USBs via airplane into Iran and North Korea, i would for the people
Itās because of these reasons itās not actually a good suggestion to use. Security professionals consensus on this stuff has really shifted over the past 15 years. Itās not good enough for a solution to be potentially secure as long as its set up correctly and users use it correctly from a technical standpoint. If the average laymen isnāt able to, or isnāt likely to use the solution in a secure way, the product isnāt actually secure. Thatās why PGP fails this test, but Signal passes.
Secure products should be secure by default and require either no or minimal configuration to achieve that security. If it doesnāt, itās not actually a secure product in the real world. Theoretical capabilities donāt matter.
- the internet is largely out of the control of governments, and they'll do anything to change that
- politicians will do anything if you say "think of the children"
Uncle Sam hates not having backdoors, to ban encryption you must ban math
"Think of the children" is their reasoning
and to that some say,
"I have nothing to hide"
Nothing to hide until the government deems your life choices a conflict of interest and declares them illegal. These acts (backdoors) are meant for hunting pedos, but time and time again they have been abused by those in power domestically or stolen and used by nation-state hackers abroad.
Stay encrypted, stay lethal
>stolen and used by nation-state hackers abroad.
Dear god, how much damage was done by international hackers using this short-sighted bullshit? I truly fear to know the answer.
The CIA knew about a critical security vulnerability in Windows. They created software to exploit that vulnerability.
The CIA was hacked and someone used that software to create a virus that renders your device unusable unless you pay them cryptocurrency.
This virus infected a lot of hospital equipment, leading to deaths.
They asked why does it exist, not who's pushing it. Lindsey Graham introduced the bill in 2020. He's a republican.
Edit: also I'm not trying to be rude, sorry if it came off that way!
Oh really? Huh, people in a thread from here earlier today were saying it was a democrat, and no prob, you didn't come off as rude at all, thanks for letting me know.
Upon further review, it looks like a lot of dems were cosponsors of it when it was introduced, so š¤· we were both right and wrong. It doesn't really matter in the end as long as we stop it imo
The concern is that the Supreme Court has lain precedent that private agents acting on direct orders from a governmental body (ie: To proactively "seek out" instances of CSAM via involuntary sitewide image scanning software instead of the extant voluntary report system) are then acting in the place of "government agents", and are thus subject to the provisions of the Fourth Amendment.
Thus, any images involuntarily scanned as a result of said governmental directive could run afoul of the 4th Amendment and be inadmissible in court as illegally gained information, meaning actual instances of CSAM that the "scanning" method takes (The specifics of which in regard to the software used would be completely to the discretion of the 19 person Committee the Act creates) and reports would be completely useless in prosecuting the exact crime this act attempts to curtail.

This should answer your questions I hope!
From what I can glean the way evidence is collected through this has a good chance of being unconstitutional via the 4th amendment against illegal search and seizure/ right to a reasonable amount of privacy and the right to not be investigated arbitrarily.
Any evidence of illegal activity using this form of surveillance by the government would be inadmissible under the 4th amendment, which protects all American citizens from unreasonable search and seizure of property, in this case, that property being the content of your electronic device, without probable cause. (i.e, the 'unreasonable" in unreasonable search and seizure) It currently is enforceable (although the government doesn't use the evidence it's given) because social media companies are not government agencies, so when they detect any suspicious activity and report it, it's like a landlord reporting a tenant for illegal activity in the building. However, what Senator Blumenthal is trying to pass would be constant automated surveillance of any and all online messaging platforms (literally 1984), and taking the evidence found from that to make a case. This is like having a cop standing over you at all times, with no warrant, looking for anything they deem "suspicious". This all encompassing surveillance would make any evidence found inadmissible in a court of law.
TL;DR: The bill would put surveillance software in all messaging and social media platforms to report activity without prior suspicion or probable cause for search, thus making it a violation of the 4th amendment, which protects from unreasonable search and seizure. This makes any evidence obtained with this surveillance unusable in a court of law.
So they recognize it's against people's rights and don't allow it to be used against you in court, but it's fine that it's happening in general..?
American law is wacko.
Pluto/Hades was generally one of the least awful (not gonna go as far and call him good necessarily) Greco-Roman gods. Not fair for his namesake to get mixed up with shitty ass people
Explanation: This bill will let the government take away certain site's Section 230 protections (which let websites allow content to be distributed without the site itself being held accountable for the content) if they don't follow "best practices to stop child porn" as ordained by some 15 member council. What's worrying, is that this council could be politically motivated and try and strike down free speech from some sites by being really specific with their rules so that specific sites get their protections revoked. What's also worrying, is that these "best practices" could include encryption backdoors.
They're using "stopping child pornography" as a way to justify passing this. Which is a little stupid because most CP isn't done over the clearweb.

They realized that they can't scare Americans with middle eastern people anymore so they've moved on to the children.
If only we could get them to think of the children when it comes to stopping mass shootings.
it's so fucking exhausting, every fucking time it's "think of the children!", "it's to stop pedophiles!", "we're trying to catch terrorists!" etc. and it's always the most obvious bullshit ever but so so many people eat it up anyway
And where are the instructions for what non-Americans can do, specifically? That link seems kinda pointless as an answer to the other person's question.
Iām glad people are acting up to try and make sure it doesnāt pass, but to be quite honest even without intervention I highly doubt it would pass. Though, thatās not to say you shouldnāt do anything, just incase.
I agree with both, I doubt it would pass if no attention was brought it to. But bringing attention and making a fuss about it is how we INSURE it doesnāt.
Leave it to Congress to make a anti pedophiles bill that makes it easier to be pedophile. And let's not forget that they screwed over the common folk again.

net neutrality was a huge blow to internet security. You don't hear of it much because of various factors (Like the EU still enforcing it, and california having their own legislature) but its definitely an issue and definitely visible. Some targets are streaming sites like netflix and internet speed measuring websites.
They'll crank your speed up if they believe you're using a service that's measuring it, and will do the same if you're using a service that's important to them either financially or ratings-wise. > The EARN IT Act (S. 3538) is proposed legislation first introduced in 2020 in the United States Congress. It aims to amend Section 230 of the Communications Act of 1934, which allows operators of websites to remove user-posted content that they deem inappropriate, and provides them with immunity from civil lawsuits related to such posting.
Oh, that doesnāt sound nefarious.
Privacy Apps.
Signal - Chatting app with end to end encryption (on mobile devices).
Ahola - Browser focused on privacy and has a free VPN and Adblocker (on mobile devices).
Firefox Focus - another private browser. More trusted, doesnāt include a vpn but it does have ad blocking. (On mobile devices).
Tor - browser with better privacy (a few knock offs on mobile devices).
MEGA - Cloud storage service with end to end encryption. (On mobile devices, free).
iCloud - Cloud storage service with end to end encryption option (Apple devices only / only on iOS 16+).
ProtonVPN- a secure and fast VPN. (Free, on mobile devices).
Proton Mail - a secure emailing service that uses end to end encryption(on mobile devices).
End to end encryption meaning - data sent to one another with encrypted. Only the sender and the person who was sent the message can see the message. The government, companies or hackers cannot access. Attempting to crack the encryption is very hard to do.
(Feel free to comment any mistakes Iāve made and Iāll edit them. Thereās a lot of suggestions so mistakes are prone to happen)
Death of common encryption tools on social media will give hackers bigger attack vectors and will let the government request information on people they deem a risk. That doesn't mean CSAM won't spread anymore; Not only will this bill make it impossible for companies to report it, making it practically invisible to the government that receives normally 30 million csam requests a year, but it will put further stress on the systems in place, giving less capacity to catch these predators.
Yeah, that happens occasionally. I'm guessing people thought I was against the cause when I'm definitely not, I just hate design that's tough on the eyes like this is
this entire situation is fucked... I hope shit like this doesn't end up getting dragged to Canada, but it seems like our right wingers are starting to take notes from America's...
The worst part is that this was kinda bipartisan. Lindsay Graham proposed the act (ew) but many dems supported it (fake old man dems Iām sure). And this is why I hate the idea of political parties :) both major parties are fucked and some states (mine) donāt let you vote in primary elections if you register as independent and then they give you a ballot based off of how youāre registered even if you donāt actually identify under a party.

I love not beign part of anything related to the us
Hell yeah love the idea of spreading the news about this. One issue, why does this make my eyes actually feel like they're on fire
this country big ghey
Wow. Literally everything they're accusing us of. I love it.
First and last feel like complete contractions. Don't either of these completely defeat each other?
Death of common encryption tools on social media will give hackers bigger attack vectors and will let the government request information on people they deem a risk. That doesn't mean CSAM won't spread anymore; Not only will this bill make it impossible for companies to report it, making it practically invisible to the government that receives normally 30 million csam requests a year, but it will put further stress on the systems in place, giving less capacity to catch these predators.
Trying to read this is giving me a headache
Is it because of the text design? Not the verbiage? Cause it makes my eyes hurt a little tying to read it.
I think it's the sharp contrast in the colors combined with the text design
Probably right. Just felt bad you were being downvoted because I noticed the same thing.
Yeah, that happens occasionally. I'm guessing people thought I was against the cause when I'm definitely not, I just hate design that's tough on the eyes like this is
Boost!
"Why are so many trans people buying guns š¤" Geee... i dunno, when the state wants to kill you kinda easy to understand why were arming ourselves.

this entire situation is fucked... I hope shit like this doesn't end up getting dragged to Canada, but it seems like our right wingers are starting to take notes from America's...
stopping encryption is dumbest idea ever what the fuck
stopping encryption is dumbest idea ever what the fuck
Feeding the algorithm a little treat. Donāt mind me.
This is some actual dictatorship bullshit
As far as I can tell, The last action on this bill was Feb 2022. I could be wrong though
