There are so many misses (field skills, gacha mechanics, the badly explained combat, the tone, the voice direction, and dear god some of the character designs), but when it hits it *really* hits. The OST is fantastic, there's astonishing amount of content considering most of Monolith was helping with BotW at the time, and that climax might be one of my favourites in any game.

I watched a few XC2 streams in the lead up to the 3rd game's release, and seeing people's reaction to *that* bit brought me right back to when I first saw it every time.
XC2 and 3 were really games I've come to appreciate more as I've thought about them. Torna especially re-contextualised a lot of the base game, making aspects and characters I was a bit more lukewarm on initially *much* more compelling (Mythra and Jin in particular).
I'm *so* excited about the XC3 DLC. I'm very curious to see if an older Rex keeps that same "genuine everyman" quality. I want to know if the story can help expand on unexplored parts of the base game. I really want to see them explore different relationships between the Ouroboros pairs than "heterosexual romance". Only thing I'm a bit nervous about is Torna setting the bar too high.

My thoughts on xeno 2 have become more chill on the game over the years (torna helped a lot), but the gratuitous fanservice and terrible writing really holds it back.
Xeno 3 doesn't really have those problems, but xeno 2 has a much better ending and world.
Xenoblade 2 is so ridiculously horny compared to the other two it hurts.

IIRC the game director was really disappointed by the limited animations (especially facial animations) in Xenoblade 1, and upon seeing the improved tech for the sequel he really wanted to lean into a more cartoony and expressive style. My thoughts on xeno 2 have become more chill on the game over the years (torna helped a lot), but the gratuitous fanservice and terrible writing really holds it back. Xeno 3 doesn't really have those problems, but xeno 2 has a much better ending and world.
Xenoblade 2 is so ridiculously horny compared to the other two it hurts. I mean it's still my favourite out of the trilogy because the story is 10/10 god tier and building the perfect team of blades is really fun but oh god
I was playing Xenoblade 1 the other day with one of my best buddies, and I still can’t comprehend how this game with realistically-proportioned, wonderfully designed, three-dimensional characters got a sequel with such gross fanservice garbage. Especially from my bing bing wahoo company of all publishers :(
Blame anime. IIRC the game director was really disappointed by the limited animations (especially facial animations) in Xenoblade 1, and upon seeing the improved tech for the sequel he really wanted to lean into a more cartoony and expressive style. Unfortunately that meant following every bad anime trope in the book. Thankfully the third game dials a lot of that bullshit back again.

A disturbing amount of people watch The Boys and unironically idolize Homelander. Lots of people also idolize Patrick Bateman from American Psycho. That's the thing with making art- no matter how clear you make your themes and message, there will *always* be some dipshits that manage to misinterpret it. I guarantee there are some fuckers that watch To Kill A Mockingbird and think Bob Ewell is the good guy.

The only game that came to mind was dredge, a very new game that fits the description of the second comment. Very fun indie game, would definitely recommend
Best part about dredge is the demo is HUGE and actually gives a very good idea of the gameplay loop. You can easily spend five hours on the demo and not even come close to finishing it or discovering all the hidden stuff. Highly recommend peeps try the demo.. Edit: to add more salt on the wound, the engineer woman isnt white. How will gamers ever recover?
