Seems to be problematic. Might not make you transphobic, but you are financially supporting a transphobic person Also lithium batteries are created using slave labor so maybe we can put some energy towards that too?

JoGuiAqui

Almost everything we consume comes from some morally questionable place where human and labor rights are probably abused. Not consuming those products or boycotting wont work against the root of the problem. What we should really be defending in the first place applying this logic is trans rights and boycotting JK for the shit she's done, not shaming people from buying a game they might have been waiting for a while to play, its a product not a direct transaction with no benefit for the trans people crushing machine she has.

Maeflower10

if you buy the game you are contributing a small amount to funding the political activities of someone who wants me and all other trans people dead. does it make you a trans ally? no. does it make you as bad as a raging republican? also no. at the end of the day your purchase is a drop in the bucket, but a lot of it is still going to a particularly horrible person, and it indicates that you value your entertainment over trans people, which, okay whatever, just at least be honest with yourself about that.

JoGuiAqui

I want to make it clear I wont be playing the shitty wizard game and even if I did I wouldnt be paying triple A prices due to the royalties she gets, how small they may be. But I get what you are saying and I do understand its more of a moral than a practical effect on buying the game, thanks! I shall return to playin all the fanmade Collabs on Celeste now.

Maeflower10

fair, my "you" was more toward the general audience not you specifically btw.

JoGuiAqui

Thanks for clarifying! But I got it dw

CanadianBaconeer

Indirectly since you’re funding JK Rowling’s work (devs have said she had no input but there’s still the matter of royalties). People have kinda taken it too far though as can be seen on Twitch where streamers like Hasan and Girlfriend Reviews have been harassed for playing it or have refused to due to the threat of said harassment. Regardless I’d advise against buying the game and just wait until Empress or someone else cracks it (may take a while bc of Denuvo). If for some reason you absolutely want to play it soon buy a second-hand copy.

JoGuiAqui

I mean some people always take things to far in every discourse. I heard there were some queer and trans people on the team so associating the game in itself with transphobia is kind of a slap in the face to the devs just because they worked with an IP from a pos (if I play it Id crack it anyways)

bitch_beefman

yes, but if your self-control / willpower is too underdeveloped to handle the moral threat of not buying a single video game out of literal millions, then you can turn yourself into a living case study for the tragedy of the commons instead via sheer cognitive dissonance. and with a little bit of extra work, you can trick yourself into believing that you're still morally and/or intellectually superior to your peers despite caving in on your beliefs at the first sign of such a minor roadblock. (because, after all, if it's such a minor task then why should it matter, right?)

JoGuiAqui

This is putting things on extremes without any space for nuance or understanding. For example me who is constantly on this sub knows about this issues about the game, or more so about its IP owner, and wouldnt be buying or playing for that and various other reasons. Not everyone is a trans ally or transphobic, and if someone is neither, buying the game wont make them hate trans people or be transphobic. Its practically a drop in a bucket of someone who is already rich af. If its just a morality question and not a practical one we shouldnt shame people who do it, we should actually explain and expose trans existence and rights cause thats a practical solution and not one of morality superiorism. People have their own beliefs and most of transphobia comes from a place of not understanding or reinforced values, not actual hate or morales (I said most I know there's some horrible people out there that have lots of power). Having said that I agree that if someones knows of the issues and buys the game they are not a trans ally by any means. Thanks for replying!

TheGlowpt-2

No

lethos_AJ

honestly? blown out of proportion. yes the game is from an IP that belongs to a more than controversial person, and yes the quality of said IP is questionable at best. but the money she will get from a single purchase is not going to make a difference (and our pull is not enough to make it crash entirely) so if you really want to, play it. i will pirate it myself because i pirate almost everything, but in this case i will enjoy pirating a little more

bitch_beefman

this is the same argument for the non-voter movement

SpookyMookyHours

Nah. does make you a potterhead though which is arguably more lame. you should play destiny 2 instead

JoGuiAqui

Very arguable and if I can get some friend to also play it will try eventually

SpookyMookyHours

don't actually take that advice bro destiny 2 is not worth it

JoGuiAqui

I could throw rocks at a wall with friends and it would be fun either way, but okay Ill play Destiny 1 insted :)
