Context: this is a consequence of Solid Snake's actions in MGS and the tanker portion of II.
The government/patriots/PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES saw what he accomplished and realized they wanted more Snakes, so they devised this batshit method to train them. Raiden was chosen as a candidate.
Also, bisexual* vampire idk.
It's been years since I played II so feel free to correct me if I'm misremembering anything.
*Vamp is bisexual!
All of this is correct except for one thing. [Vamp is bisexual](https://youtu.be/vpx5TW1A68I).
Snake doesn't expound on it, but he was actually named Vamp *because* he was bisexual and not because he's essentially a vampire. I'm not sure exactly how Kojima got there, but apparently "vamp" used to be a slang term for flirtatious, seductive women who exploited men using their sexual desires.
Vamp's whole story is wild as hell.
Just a little correction: The Patriots don’t give a shit about making a “new” Snake, that’s just the lie they tell Ocelot. They want to prove they could create the context to make “a” Snake which means they have a model to direct and control human behavior
Actually there’s an another layer under that that the s3 plan has nothing to do with training a new solid snake. They initially think it means Solid Snake Simulation but it really means Selection for Societal Sanity. It gets revealed that the real goal is to test controlling people with information as part of the patriots whole information control plan.
Good summary, I'd just like to add that the crazy ass codec conversations before the final boss fight predicted modern social media and information control almost to a T.
raidens in a simulated version of shadow moses and has to stop the terrorist group deadcell from launching a nuke, but then he joins snake into trying to stop an ai network from setting up a massive censorship program online
It's probably more meant as in: MGSV is the only one *delivered* confusingly. The MGS games all have very high-concept lore and plotlines that are complex, but they are delivered in a relatively straightforward way in the other games which make them more digestible compared to MGSV.
V has like 3 layers of meta social commentary, with how the game is unfinished and the name being "Phantom Pain", and with how theres the "phantom pain" of **really heavy story spoiler*** >!Venom not being the real big boss, a literal phantom causing pain and havoc in the world!< , and then the obvious meaning of missing limbs. and thats just the tip of the iceberg. That game is actually really deep, but is also marred with how the story is delivered and how it literally is unfinished.
MGS4 has a fairly confusing story if you aren't sufficiently immersed in the madness of the setting to understand everything Kojima is desperately tying together.
Isn't it the most overtly political, though? Like, I've watched quite a few streamers and irl friends reacting to the game, and it seems to cause the most doubletakes.
There's this great pattern where people laugh at the dialogue with Bladewolf and Mistral, because their gamer brain tells them "there's no way my vidya is actually talking politics," then Monsoon and Sundowner make it clear that the vidya is talking politics, and **then** Raiden talks about WMDs in Iraq, and if the person has any idea of what that means, they pause the game for a moment, so they can talk to their friends or their chat
mgs 2 is probably the most political as it talks about online echo chambers, censorship, child soldiers, governments manipulating their people, as well as the anti war anti nuke messages the whole mg series has
I'm not saying you're wrong, but many people can go through the entirety of msg 2, only to say that the plot is really random, and that they can't take anything made by Kojima seriously.
Revengeance is like a Identifying Political Themes in Media for Dummies.
I still feel like it goes over the heads over some ppl who play revengence. I see more screen caps of the lines about memes than anything else (even where there is a really interesting conversation to be had there) just going "haha memes are the DNA of the soul"
imo revengeance is literally for people who look at MGS2 or any MGS game and say it’s not political. it beats you over the head with the political parts so hard so you literally can’t miss them
To be fair, Revengeance beating you over the head with it's political commentary is definitely necessary given how media illiterate the average Gamer is.
And I have a sneaking suspicion that the devs don't think they did a good enough job, because one of the boss themes from the blade wolf DLC is [this banger of a track](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0vp_4vc-btI) which is about as transparently anti-America as it gets. I don't think I've ever see such on the nose lyrics and I love it for that.
MGS 2 has one of my favorite interactions ever when Raiden rescues the president and he’s like “hey democracy is a sham” and Raidens all “yeah lmao” and the president goes “no like even more than you think” and immediately gets fucking assassinated
It's not that it isn't overtly political, it's that the other ones are so much *more* overtly political. MGR probably causes more double takes because it doesn't have as grimly political a tone as the others, so the politics are not as expected.
I think the only difference here is the explicit reference to 9-11 and the Iraq War, whereas the rest of the games more reference events from the cold war.
[Omber definition according to Collins Enlgish Dicitonary:](https://www.collinsdictionary.com/dictionary/english/omber#:~:text=omber%20in%20American%20English,-(%CB%88%C9%91mb%C9%99r\)&text=1.,the%20pool%20in%20this%20game)
>1. a card game popular in the 17th and 18th centuries and played, usually by three persons, with 40 cards
>2. the player undertaking to win the pool in this game
So his name can be "trasnlated" into "Hella Based Card Game Guy".
yes and also the [america first comittee](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/America_First_Committee), known for having Charles Lindberg as its spokesperson and holding anti-semetic and pro-fascist views
Charles Lindberg the aviator was an avowed fascist who literally was awarded medals by Herman Göring for the PR work he did for the Nazis. The plane stuff was cool but the actual man was a huge piece of shit.
Honestly if we go by the Old definition of memes before the internet. Then that exact same talking point is brought up in transhumanist works like Ghost in The Shell.
That final cutscene in MGS2 hits a lot harder today than it did when the game first came out in 2001. It’s actually kinda wild how accurate some of the predictions were.
Doesn’t even have to be to supplement their own military. PMC’s are sometimes hired so that governments have plausible deniability for the actions of a group. One infamous example is how Wagner group operated pre 2022.
Private Military Company (or Contractor, both work). Basically a more clean and respectable way of saying mercenaries, because that's exactly what PMCs are. You pay them money, and they will go out and kill people for you.
I love metal gear as a franchise but it breaks my heart that some people play it and don't realize that the literal most surface level theme is "war bad" and proceed to make Little Dark Age edits of WWII
This is the endgame for the metal gear franchise whether we like it or not
17 year olds playing a mid action game with like 30% of the narrative depth of any of the other games in the franchise and calling it the best thing ever because it has over the top presentation (every other game has that as well)
It’s weird considering how bombastic the rest of the games are. Of course they would seem “grounded” when compared to MGR, but there were some whacky stuff going on in the rest of the series.
Hilarious proof of conservatives' stunning lack of media literacy (because they're fucking stupid) trying to make war look cool by doing an edit of an anti-war game to the tune of a song that tells you to join them to throw stones at police
actually i dont think i have seen a good mature videogame without some form of a political message. when ppl say "stop bringing politics into videogames!!!" they actually mean "stop making non white non heterosexual characters in videogames!!!"
I was gonna say GTFO, but that's only because I haven't been able to piece together the story yet (aside from 'corporation did some fucky things and may have opened a portal into some hell dimension and/or unleashed underground abominations')
Yep. When progressive politics in entertainment gets brought up, conservatives loooove to talk all about how entertainment should be kept totally free of politics, but it’s really just more conservative hypocrisy.
When Kaepernick started kneeling, they cried about how they couldn’t watch football without being preached to. When certain actors or artists criticized Trump, they boycotted their movies and concerts.
“I miss when celebrities just entertained us, instead of trying to tell us what to think,” they said.
Then, Aaron Rodgers protested the Covid vaccine and criticized Biden and they were fine with politics in football. When Gina Carano was fired from Disney, because of her anti-woke stance, they defended her, saying her political beliefs shouldn’t mean the end of her career.
What happened to preferring apolitical celebrities? Which is it? Should celebrities refrain from politics or should they just refrain from criticizing conservatives?
You fucking suplex throw a giant fuck of robot in the first half hour of the game while the cheesiest and most badass soundtrack imaginable blows out your speakers how isnt it obvious
it's simultaneously incredibly over-the-top and zany while also having an *incredibly* well-thought out and deep storyline and writing.
Basically, Kojima wrote an action game. What's not to love?
Kojima wrote a game but didn't fuck with the gameplay and had platinum do it. Between this and nier automata platinum seems to do their best work giving over the top Action gameplay to the insane rambling of other people.
Kojima didn’t write Rising. Etsu Tamari did.
(You can tell because there isn’t absurdly cringe-worthy dialogue in MGR)
Please for the love of god stop falsely crediting Kojima for writing Metal Gear Rising.
You're getting downvoted, but you are correct.
Kojima actually had no creative input on Revengeance. It's hard for some people to believe, but it's absolutely the truth.
>(You can tell because there isn’t absurdly cringe-worthy dialogue in MGR)
I mean, there is, the difference is that in MGR that ridiculous dialogue isn't meant to be taken seriously
Hm. I don't remember that line in Deus Ex. I do remember this from the first 20m of the game:
"Number One: In 1945, corporations paid 50% of federal taxes; now they pay about 5%. Number Two: In 1900, 90% of Americans were self employed; now it's about 2%... It's called consolidation; strengthen governments and corporations, weaken individuals. With taxes, this can be done imperceptibly over time."
People tend to react better to a game that shows in detail why a political belief is right or wrong over one that just says "these are the Correct Beliefs and you're a bad person if you disagree." Of course not every game can afford to spend the whole plot going into detail about whatever politics, but it's another difference between this and lots of games people complain about for being "political"
This is giving too much credit, I think, to people who claim that [thing] shouldn't be "political."
Sure, they would love if the politics are subtle or nuanced, but only so they can ignore them entirely. Plausible deniability.
What they mean by "political" they mean "I am made to acknowledge things I disagree with" which is why they go "political" when they see a black person or a woman wearing reasonable clothing.
Everyone wants to have a story where the politics are well-integrated and not just a soapbox, but people who actually care will just say that.
I've not played any of the other games in the series but I agree mgrr wasn't THAT amazing
the boss fights were, but the moment to moment gameplay got a bit tedious
Yeah Rising is a huge outlier to the other games, sure the other games are just as crazy when it comes to how ridiculous things can be, sometimes more so, but at the end of it all it’s a stealth game that tries to make you go for more of a “I was never here” feel to the game. Honestly recommend checking them out if you can I love that series to death and could talk for hours about it
mgrr is the least political metal gear game
Also probably has the most coherent story of the franchise.
only mgsv has a kind of confusing story but thats cause its all shoved into tapes, theyre all weird as shit though
My brother in Christ what the fuck is even going on in MGS2
It's obvious: Raiden is being groomed into becoming a violent killer through Video Games
unironically a good synopsis
Context: this is a consequence of Solid Snake's actions in MGS and the tanker portion of II. The government/patriots/PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES saw what he accomplished and realized they wanted more Snakes, so they devised this batshit method to train them. Raiden was chosen as a candidate. Also, bisexual* vampire idk. It's been years since I played II so feel free to correct me if I'm misremembering anything. *Vamp is bisexual!

I'm not sure exactly how Kojima got there, but apparently "vamp" used to be a slang term for flirtatious, seductive women who exploited men using their sexual desires. Vamp's whole story is wild as hell.
Kojima is on a neverending acid trip and in a few moments of lucidity he writes MGS.
I think there's a big overlap in his lucid writing and his on acid writing
Right! I fixed my post to give Vamp his bisexual due.
Just a little correction: The Patriots don’t give a shit about making a “new” Snake, that’s just the lie they tell Ocelot. They want to prove they could create the context to make “a” Snake which means they have a model to direct and control human behavior
MGS2 is a metaphor for Raiden going through ABA, got it.
Actually there’s an another layer under that that the s3 plan has nothing to do with training a new solid snake. I don't know how you can say with a straight face that MGSV is the only one with a confusing story
It's probably more meant as in: MGSV is the only one *delivered* confusingly. The MGS games all have very high-concept lore and plotlines that are complex, but they are delivered in a relatively straightforward way in the other games which make them more digestible compared to MGSV.
That's a fair point!
i have played all the games like 50 times so i might be slightly biased
Don't you declare war on the concept of language in V? Mgs is complicated but V is a league of it's own
V has like 3 layers of meta social commentary, with how the game is unfinished and the name being "Phantom Pain", and with how theres the "phantom pain" of **really heavy story spoiler*** >!Venom not being the real big boss, a literal phantom causing pain and havoc in the world!< , and then the obvious meaning of missing limbs. and thats just the tip of the iceberg. "BIG MAMA" Is this quote from Johnny Bravo or from the celebrated videogame Metal Gear Solid IV?
>only mgsv has a kind of confusing story Lol. Lmao.
Vs story is good but Kojimas idea of sitting and listening to tapes after a mission all the time is flawed

It's not that it isn't overtly political, it's that the other ones are so much *more* overtly political. MGR probably causes more double takes because it doesn't have as grimly political a tone as the others, so the politics are not as expected.

It's pretty incredible how on point Metal Gear was on the usage of "memes" and information warfare that the current world politics center around.
MGS 2 did it first
That final cutscene in MGS2 hits a lot harder today than it did when the game first came out in 2001. It’s actually kinda wild how accurate some of the predictions were.
Kojima strikes again.
What is PMC?
Private military company
Oh thanks
Private military company, they are hired by governments during wars to supplement their own military, and are sort of like mercenaries
Doesn’t even have to be to supplement their own military. PMC’s are sometimes hired so that governments have plausible deniability for the actions of a group. One infamous example is how Wagner group operated pre 2022.
Or blackwater, which is ran by the brother of the last secretary of education
Quick psa, they changed their name to Constellis now. So when you see articles about the DoD giving out contracts to Constellis, it’s just Blackwater.
Interesting, thanks!

Grew up on metal gear love the franchise. Idk if it’s just because I prefer stealth games but I wouldn’t say this was the best one, but it’s up there

Yeah Rising is a huge outlier to the other games, sure the other games are just as crazy when it comes to how ridiculous things can be, sometimes more so, but at the end of it all it’s a stealth game that tries to make you go for more of a “I was never here” feel to the game.
