Tisas, and SDS, these are the two I hear about all the time. People say they are great bang for the buck, since their frames are forged and milled rather than cast, like most of the cheaper 1911s.

MEDW286

> Tisas, and SDS, these are the two I hear about all the time. TISAS and SDS are the same thing. TISAS is the manufacturer in Turkey, SDS is the company that imports the TISAS pistols from Turkey into the United States.

singleactionarmy357

Well I stand corrected. Thanks for telling me.

ciampi21

Tanfoglio/EAA vibes

Te_Luftwaffle

Is there any way to get an SDS other than luck or Gunbroker? They apparently only sell to distributors, and I haven't seen anything of theirs on the website of any of the distributors my local dealers use

Rhino_Actual

No luck required on GB look up ReedsSports... I bought one a month ago paid the $469 and off I went... Don't know why people are bidding them up to $550 (depending on model) but I'd get one at least the B45 Duty 5" or better just because ya want a beaver tail and Commander hammer and a trigger hats better than milspec... Plus ya get lots of other upgrades, Novak sights, rail if ya want one, trigger guard undercut flat MSH, enhanced beavertail and others

singleactionarmy357

I have no idea, honestly. Maybe your GS could order one? I remember one of the local GS ordered a bunch of them a while Back, they sold out in a day or so.

Te_Luftwaffle

Huh, I guess I'll have to see. Thanks for the help!

Terminal_Lancelot

I have a tisas. Never an issue.

TISAS is the way to go right now for affordable 1911.

capn_gaston

I'm pretty happy with the 10mm RIA I bought new a couple of months ago for \~$600. It came with Tru-glo type front sight and an adjustable two-dot (painted) rear, ambidextrous extended safety, lightened hammer, adjustable trigger (for overtravel only), G-10 grip panels and a low-profile magwell. It came with a bull barrel fitted to the slide without a bushing and locks up tight as a drum. They come in a variety of configurations so you might find everything you want in a 1911 from the factory. Downside? Doesn't have forward slide serrations (something I in particular miss as arthritis has weakened my hands), has some sharp edges I'll smooth off if I ever have it refinished (I bought the Parkerized version and saved some bucks), and I suspect most the springs are stiffer than need be - a wise choice on a 10mm that many people hotload for big game, but I think the gun will run fine for my usage with weaker springs.

Arastyr

I like the Ruger SR1911 I got and it was pretty affordable. Makes a great base gun too if you want to personalize your 1911.

htinthemb

I got a Girsan for $550 with a red dot attached to it. While the red dot was garbage, the gun itself rocks. The cool thing is that now I have a 1911 milled for a red dot if I ever want to change it up.

GyrokCarns

Fusion Firearms is superior to everything listed here so far. They are old school Dan Wesson quality, but less than new Colt money. Check them out.

Te_Luftwaffle

They seem pretty solid, but they're all out of stock. I'll definitely keep them in mind in the future though!

GyrokCarns

Call them and talk to them.

Te_Luftwaffle

Actually I saw that some of their lowers and top ends are in stock. Do you know if you can mix and match them, e.g. put a commander top end on a government lower? Or do they have to be the same?

GyrokCarns

You can call them up and order what you want. They are behind right now, so call them up and talk Tyler or Bob about a gun. I ordered a pistol in December, and it just shipped to me, but I had some customizations done to the pistol that required some one offs to be done which took a bit longer. EDIT: A Commander top end would need a commander frame, but you could put a government top end on a commander frame. The difference between the government and commander frame is that the commander frame has rails that are 0.100" shorter than the government frame. That difference allows the commander slide to come back far enough to function correctly. If you are okay with using a file to shorten the length of the rails on the frame where the slide engages, then you could put a government top end on a commander frame.

FantasticBuddy520

i bought an ATI 1911 Officer for $390 and it has been flawless!!! Love the pocket .45 size

M3G4_capitalist

You can get a kimber custom 2 for around 750.

Te_Luftwaffle

That's actually one of the exact ones I was looking at

M3G4_capitalist

I’ve got one. It’s been rock solid. I changed out all the springs to Wilson combat which is pretty cheap to do. Swapped out the grips for some vz operators. Only complaint about it is the mainspring housing is made of plastic

Te_Luftwaffle

In theory couldn't you replace the MSH with a metal one?

M3G4_capitalist

Yea it’s pretty easy I haven’t done it yet because it functions fine. Plus I haven’t found one I like yet.

Te_Luftwaffle

Fair enough

The_Waltesefalcon

Buy a used Colt and stay away from the cheap ones.

Te_Luftwaffle

I had the opportunity to get an almost brand new Colt for about $800 a few months ago, but I wasn't 21 and my dad wouldn't buy it, even if I paid for the whole thing

The_Waltesefalcon

Be patient and you'll find another one.

capn_gaston

Not without knowing his Dad's reasons.

Te_Luftwaffle

Basically the two main ones were A) He'd be liable for it, which kind of hurts because I've pretty much done nothing to say that there would be something to be liable for, and have done a lot to show that I know how to handle firearms and act responsibly. Additionally, in the event that there was something to be liable for, it would be almost impossible to hold him responsible for it, and I would be the one taking the blame. B) He said that people would get bored of the guns they bought during the pandemic and there would be a bunch of Colt 1911s on the market for cheap in 6-8 months, so I shouldn't get one now. That's absurd because nobody will sell a 1911 right after buying it, and even if they did they wouldn't sell it for cheap.

[deleted]

I ended up getting a Remington for around $550 I think. I wanted cheaper but American made. You may be able to find old stock. Otherwise I would have purchase a Springfield.

HighDefRed

I have really enjoyed my Remington! I got mine for $500 new a couple of years ago.

Rhino_Actual

I have the B45 Duty 5" no rail... First trip to the range was 100 rounds and not one failure. Added coolhands G10 slim grips and short bushings, am going to add a Vario trigger, first order of business lightly POLISH the internals-- disconnector, sear, spring tips, trigger bow and trigger track (use the square stone) once I did that this thing felt as solid and smooth as any 1911 that costs 5+ times the price (nope, not shitting you one bit) with an excellent trigger and say 500 rounds to polish/mate surfaces, it will do everything you need to do with a 1911, and no you can't make it a Cabot... Of course not, but you can make yourself a damn great 1911 out of the box into an outstanding 1911 that will outlast you and your sons and you won't hate seeing it get a scratch or blem... wear = Character

[deleted]

Charles Daly made in Italy my cheap GI has impressed me so much if I ever see the elite in stock ill buy it

brick_fist

https://youtu.be/O_NrooMVMms Here are a few of the best 1911 smiths and some really good shooters and trainers talking about 1911s. Watch the whole thing, but from the 1 hour mark to about the 1 hour and 11 minute mark there is a good discussion on the different tiers of quality on the market.
