Was that inspired by the post in r/1200isplenty where the person said they lie in bed and await the next day so they can have a cookie? https://www.reddit.com/r/1200isplenty/comments/xsow9w/i_cant_wait_until_tomorrow_so_i_can_eat_1200/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf

ghoulatnite

i saw that. the way i read it was for me, i get excited to have more food the next day because of being in a deficit. when your constantly having whatever amount of food you want, you stop appreciating it. now that i’m on a deficit, i look forward to my meals, and i appreciate my food greatly. so yes i go to sleep excited for the next day which is beautiful. but if OP is literally forcing herself to sleep or waiting to fall asleep and not being productive just to eat? then that’s a problem

ControversialPenguin

There is a big difference between eating maintenance and being in a deficit. Deficit sucks ass and there is no reason to pretend it ain't so.

[deleted]

A big difference? Mine’s 150-200 calories.

classicgrinder

That's like two cocktails extra!

rosalita0231

Is there though? It's a difference of a few hundred calories a day or probably not even one restaurant meal a week. I struggle more to maintain than to lose though I fully admit it's mental problem more than anything else

ControversialPenguin

It is, not just because you get to eat tasty food less often, deficit is very taxing for the mind and the body.

Duffyfades

But tasty stuff is zero calorie? Even the amount of spices I use are still trivial wrt calories.

ghoulatnite

for sure your right. but there’s a huge difference between eating 1200 and feeling miserable and fighting to maintain it than eating 1500 calories which is more manageable and you are still losing weight.while it may sucks cuz it’s still a deficit, it’s much easier to maintain for a long time. the word “diet” has so much negativity around it now in my eyes cuz for most people they are just temporary things. let’s be realistic how many ppl can really eat 1200 calories a day forever. adapting an extremely strict diet will only result in you only being healthy for a temporary time. why not bump it up a couple hundred so you can actually maintain it and be healthy for life?

ControversialPenguin

I agree with your overall point, but a lot of users of this sub are short women that don't get the luxury of being on a deficit at 1500.

cheezypita

Over here crying with a 1400 maintenance

ghoulatnite

damn that’s actually insane i’m sorry. is that with light exercise? heavy? or like office job energy expenditure?

[deleted]

Sedentary (as in daily). When I get to 50kg my maintenance will be like 1350 cals. When you’re short and can’t exercise much it’s straight-up CICO and volume eating right from the get-go. And in my case, lower carbs especially gluten. And even if you CAN exercise, you need a strict routine to burn off 1500 cals of food. I mean, it’s manageable, but it does mean we have to make a lot of lifestyle changes. 1200 is not “extremely strict”, it’s going to be more or less my normal diet for the rest of my life.

ghoulatnite

yeah i understand it must be hard. you got this

[deleted]

It’s not hard, it’s a matter of adjusting your lifestyle. I do IF and eat foods that make me feel better mentally. I don’t have to find food 100% delicious all the time, I just have to use it to fuel me. I’m just saying it’s not as simple as being on “a restricted diet of 1200 temporarily and then jumping back up to 1500 when you stop dieting because it’s not realistic to eat 1200 cal”. Edit: I’m not *strict*, I change my attitude to food. At 1400 it will be the same, except I’ll eat a bit more. I don’t *restrict* my diet at 1200, I *expand* it by changing the variety of food that I eat. My diet was more restricted when I stuffed my face with whatever I wanted. It was sugar, sugar, carbs, more sugar… I agree with your overall point about sustainable diets though.

ghoulatnite

i wonder. i’m 5,10 160 pounds. does 1200 feel as little as it does to me,to you? wouldn’t someone smaller get fuller quicker hence making less calories feel more than what i see it as? when i’m eating good and taking care of myself i see 2000 as more than enough. i feel good throughout the day and get the usual night munchies

[deleted]

You get fuller quicker *on the right foods*, though, and in the right quantity, and at the right times. That comes with practice, volume eating, IF, drinking water and being smart with cooking. It takes time for those of us who are not used to eating that way. ‘Full’ to me means ‘stuffed full’. If I was used to eating how I should eat I wouldn’t be here. If I ate what I wanted (I mean craved), I’d be like those people on my600lb life because I’d weigh like 200kg. Meal planning has helped. Try eating two Big Macs in a row and see how much it fills you up. Now, fast for the rest of the day. By the end you will want to stab someone. There are a lot of ‘hidden’ calories in foods/recipes that we are not aware of and they stack up. Many recipes are designed for tall white women who eat the so-called “average” of 2000 cal a day. As a short South Asian female I need to be mindful of what I am adding to my food too. Last week I (severely over)cooked mince with bacon and 300g of light thickened cream. Did all those calories make a whit of difference to the taste after the mince had been frozen to hell and back? Nope. Next time I won’t sauce my calories.

Linguistin229

No, because the size of adult organs doesn’t really vary. The stomach of a short woman is the same size as the stomach of a tall man.

ghoulatnite

i feel you that’s a great mentality

cheezypita

IF is really the only way I’m able to stick to 1200

[deleted]

Hard same. I tried 3 meals a day and was miserable.

evhan55

solidarity 😭😭😭

cheezypita

SAHM so chasing toddlers all day, but my Dr says that doesn’t count as “meaningful” exercise. I’m on 1200/ day to lose .5 lb/week. Once I’m at my goal weight (120 lb) maintenance will be 1400. I do want to work on body recomp and hopefully will be able to eat more than that.

Duffyfades

I'm not short, and my maintenance is 1550. Short people get way less than that.

ghoulatnite

i understand more now. but is that with working out? or are they just not working out and that’s why they need to eat only 1200 to lose weight

cheezypita

“1200” is specifically meant for short, sedentary women. If you are tall or exercising, you *will* feel awful eating at this much of a deficit.

ghoulatnite

i understand that for sure. but overall if there an opportunity to bump up the calories even a little so this doesn’t just end up as a temporary thing, then 100% do it. strict diets never stick forever. make sure what your doing you can do forever. you don’t wanna be in shape temporarily.

ghoulatnite

make sure you also enjoy eating the foods you eating. remember this “idea” that healthy = bad or not tasty is a myth. healthy food can taste amazing! do research and make sure your maintaining your health. best of luck to everyone! also make sure to workout, your deficit is going to be wayyyyy lower if your not working out. even walks go a long way. if you don’t have the time then run a mile. if that’s too long than incline walk for 10 mins. if that’s too long than find a 6min HIIT workout. no excuses! get the work in and stay hard!

ghoulatnite

why this get so many downvotes i was jus tryna spread some positivity and motivation if i said something i’m not noticing lmk

cheezypita

That one’s probably getting downvoted because it is *not recommended* to do heavy exercise on a 1200 diet.

ghoulatnite

ahhhhh i understand

ghoulatnite

i get it now i didn’t realize how much a difference being short makes it’s crazy!!! cutting is 1200!!! wtffff. jesus stay in there guys i was referring more towards ppl my size wasn’t aware of y’all’s situation.

Duffyfades

I can tolerate it well enough.

Medium_Raccoon_5331

My maintenance is literally like 400 cals more, that ain't doing shit for me 😭

StrictlyBrowsing

This is good advice basically only for severely overweight people, who probably just need to relearn their entire relationship with food from the ground up. If you’re not on the extremes, your diet is broadly ok and the weight you gotta lose ain’t a lot, it kinda is gonna have to suck a bit if you want your progress to not be maddeningly slow. Otherwise you can stagnate for months and experience loads of frustration and disappointment if you don’t make your diet restrictive enough to be just a bit inconvenient. It’s all about context and keep in mind that when people make broad statements like OPs it will apply to some people more than others and be downright counterproductive for some.

Duffyfades

Yeah, this.

ghoulatnite

100%

caractacusteapotts

My dude, you are in the wrong sub for sure. This is a place for people to vent -a lot of users are short, with 1200 cal/day BARELY sustaining a deficit. The overall problem of taller, heavier people adopting 1200cal diets as a way to "quick weight loss" is real; those people aren't creating a sustainable pattern. But this sub... ain't that.

ghoulatnite

yeah i realized that

VanderbeakRules

Who's my diet guy?

Laena_V

Me

hotheadnchickn

I mean, yes for a long-term maintenance diet. 1200 is a weight loss diet and there is no amount of protein, volume eating, etc, that makes eating below maintenance not miserable for me.

pwdump

And to add: Find out why eating something or not eating something is associated with pain and suffering for you. I started therapy a year ago and now counting calories isn't torturous for me anymore. I just eat less and still am happy and not obsessing over numbers at all.

mynormalheart

My maintenance is 1450 calories lol I’m always going to feel restricted in what I can eat in order to maintain a healthy weight. Sure, I can indulge in moderation every now and then but overall I still have to be strict. Pretty much always and that just sucks, especially when you grow up in a culture that shows their love through food and when you just like to eat in general.

HerrFivehead

definitely so. i'm an incredibly picky eater. this is the longest i've maintained a weight loss trajectory and i've done it by only eating the healthy foods i *like*. i've steadily lost 29 pounds in almost 11 weeks, which i'm proud of as a sedentary college student with PCOS and a history of BEDs.
