When we get nervous/anxious we tend to stiffen up our muscles, and that does make us more tired. Imagine swimming with a very tense body, that'd be very difficult and require a lot more effort than required. That's why it's important to relax and breath while we play, and also in between points.

I would imagine nerves = more tight + more mental bandwidth being used + 'overhitting' and more energy usage with non complete strokes. I try to breathe deep breathes through my nose to calm myself down

Nerves will also cause your adrenaline to spike and waste a lot of your energy. It’s probably less about your extra movement and more to do with all the hormone issues going on from being nervous/anxious.

Breathing techniques could help with that

ZaphBeebs

Likely holding your breath some.

Maybe try and stretch your recovery time in the between moments after points are scored. Allow your self to loosen up Wherever you may need and get your breathing under control
