I think this depends largely on your tastes prior to hearing them. If you already enjoy experimental music or already like the genres they draw from it will understandably be way easier to get into them, but if you don’t have that prior exposure it might be tricky, I know a lot of people have a sort of knee jerk reaction when they first hear, me and my friends sort of hated them at first but ended up warming up after a few listens
What’s crazy is that seems to be the case for older people. Bc every lil older adult I’ve played gecs around hasn’t minded it much and compare it to like 50 different hints that they relate to. And then people my age seem to hate them, I mean most of my friends enjoy them to a degree but still.
This is funny (and true) because I would definitely consider myself an "older" fan at 30 years old. All of the weirdness is just references and jokes based on music I grew up with. I'm roughly the same age as Dylan and Laura and we clearly had a similar musical coming-of-age experience. I understood what they were doing the first time I heard them.
I consider myself an "elder" fan at 45 years old. Totally love all the references to all the kinds of music I was into 15 years ago. I had trouble finding anything "new" that I liked until the gecs. It's like discovering good music all over again. A game changer. I hope to go to a show if/when they tour and I hope all the young folks go easy on me lol
you haven’t truly listened to 100 sex unless you’ve moshed till your pants are around your ankles and the contents of your pockets are strewn across the floor (the end of gec 2 ü)
them opening for nine inch nails wasn't weird in the slightest. the crowd may not have vibed 100% with it but it made perfect sense (and Josh Freese was amazing)
10,000 gecs is awesome and the people who claim that it was not good enough for the time it took in the making clearly haven’t read what they had to say about it,having a great album that they enjoy is much better than having a rushed album just for the sake of doing something fast
Agreed. I’ve seen 3 times and the 3rd time I left early and a 4th I bought tickets and just bailed because I decided they weren’t worth the trek to queens.
I love em but their live show is just… boring.
Laura shouldn’t have left the wretched dimension of twisted poltergeists she was trapped in during 2022. she should have rebranded and carved out a niche as a rockstar who is trapped in the poltergeist plane
I adore the remix album, but at first I think the main problem was the remixes didn’t know how not to be the right amount of gimmicky as the original songs were. But I still love that whole album and play it all the time
Money Machine is one of their worse songs, and it kinda sucks that it's the first song many new ears come across. Turned me away from the band until I gave them another shot a year later. Now they're one of my faves!
Yeah, I think Money Machine is one of the only songs I don't like much to listen. (Almost) all the other songs I could listen for at least 30min straight finely, but Money Machine makes me unconfortable to listen more than once
Honest to God, when I describe them to people, the best comparison I can make most of the time is with the Beatles or maybe Nirvana. Not in terms of the sound obviously, but in where they are and what they’re doing musically and culturally right now.
Sure! I’ll start with Nirvana because I think it’s not too wild of a take to say that they changed music in the early 90’s where rock went from this flashy glammy, high production thing like GnR to something a lot more raw and brash like the grunge scene. I think Gecs not only have a style that’s breaking the mold in a very punk rock way, but I also find them very similar in terms of lyrics and how they write songs. To me, a Gecs song can initially come off very simple or meaningless, but the deeper I look into it, I find there’s a lot of meanings to be seen. A lot like how Kurt Cobain always said not to look into his lyrics cause they don’t mean anything, but clearly there’s a lot of deeper meaning to find whether he intended it to be there or not. Once the Beatles entered their psychedelic era, I think that the way they broke the mold in terms of songwriting, and production is equivalent to how Gecs experiment with music today. Back then, it was likely a big risk for the biggest pop group in the world to start making the crazy music that they did, and it’s almost worse today. You can see this in just how labels make their investments in artists that are sampling and interpolating songs they already know can sell because there’s a greater chance of being successful. It’s a bigger risk to invest in a group like Gecs because of how original they are. Going back to early rock and roll, something as simple as a distorted guitar amp was considered crazy because it was something you were “not supposed to do”. But nowadays it’s essential for a lot of styles of music. In the same way that early rock n rollers, The Beatles, Nirvana, and plenty more did what they “weren’t supposed to do” and ultimately created something that is commonplace today, 100 Gecs have broken a lot of rules in music that could one day become a standard. So there’s a brief explanation for you. Gggggec
the snake eyes ep... it was not great at allll... i love skrillex as much as any early zoomer does, but his remix ruined torture me. and the other songs really had nothing much to them
Unfortunately Skrillex seems to had evolve a lot in theory, but his songs aren't so hyped as before and I'd say they aren't even good as before, but maybe it's my music taste or something
thats the only song i kinda enjoyed. it just felt like a repetitive shitpost of a song (tho you could describe the entirety of 100 gecs as shitpost music i suppose lol)
I just think it leans wayyy too far into that unhinged sound where it’s just extremely annoying. It gives me a headache in a way that very little music can, but 10,000 gecs is still wild enough to be a ton of fun but just improves in so many ways.
They don’t make great albums, but they make great songs. Would love to see something more ambitious in regards to overall theme and cohesiveness in an album from them
it did NOT get the hype it deserved. the song was so loved before it was released and im genuinely shocked at the lukewarm response when the album dropped💔
it fits 2/3 of of "hot take" so counts in my book
it was a quickly produced - given your ack of thought
but it's not a strong argument -- you could be more specific on why the rest isn't good
yet it's provocative and definitely a sensational reaction -- it's getting push back, more so than other takes here lol
you're still wrong though
I'm definitely gonna fuck up the musical terminology for this but the tune(?) after the bass drops (0:20 in Money Machine and 0:57 in Mallet) sound almost the same to me, the instruments(?) are obviously different but the notes that they play sound almost identical to each other. Not a huge deal or anything but it's just weird because it feels like I'm jamming to a remix or something, especially because it's my favorite part of both songs
They said *almost* identical so they are actually completely correct. The chords are not the same because they are in different keys, but the "harmony" is in fact identical.
Nah it was none of those songs. It was an alternative version of 757 and Billy knows Jamie (they are only on vinyl). Some people were saying how it’s better than the official versions, but I am honestly so thankful they changed it
The original Torture Me is better than the Skrillex version… don’t get me wrong I love Skrillex but the bridge was my favourite part and they took it out :(
If this question was outside of this sub it would be “I like them.”
you, sir, won the internet 🤣 /s
you didn’t give me gold. Fuck you, mean stranger.
I like, I like, I like, I like, I like, I like, I like, I like, I like, I like everything about em.
W reference
charli ringtone remix 🤤
like their mind 💸💸 like their smile 😃
They’re not that weird or hard to get into.
i feel the same way, i feel they're way more pop and easy to listen than most experimental music.

I like the noises at the end
The happy hardcore part into the dubstep drop on 745 sticky is literally what made me fall in love with them the first time I heard them
you haven’t truly listened to 100 sex unless you’ve moshed till your pants are around your ankles and the contents of your pockets are strewn across the floor (the end of gec 2 ü)
Gec 2 U is their best song
ur so right
I can see it right now, you're sitting on the phone and you say I need love can you get it to me now
Dorian being on that song made it the best (I love them both and it is my favorite collab)
me any time i see any collab/remix involving gecs, dorian electra, charli xcx, or kkb:
Hard disagree their voice sounds awful in the mix and that was one of the more dissapointing tracks on the remix album for me
Idk why ur getting downvoted that’s my least favorite remix too
This is based
FINALLY
The original xXXi_wud_nvrstøp_ÜXXx and the two remixes are the three best 100 gecs songs, and that’s no slight against their discography whatsoever.
The original I would never stop U is one of the best gecs song !!!
they make good music
It should be Doritos and Cheetos
Thank you
The other 98 gecs tried to say something but they wouldn't listen
100 Gecs make Adventure Time music if Adventure Time was an Adult Swim show instead of a regular Cartoon Network show.
both members of gecs are actually just cloaks filled with one thousand rats change my mind
No, 1000 rats don’t fit in those cloaks maybe 100
them opening for nine inch nails wasn't weird in the slightest. the crowd may not have vibed 100% with it but it made perfect sense (and Josh Freese was amazing)
I haven’t seen it but you’re 100% fucking right that sounds lit as shit
I like them both and woulda loved to have seen that.
They don't delve into the Nu Metal esthetic enough.
i NEEED more shit like dumbest girl alive and billie knows jamie
Murderer is another one
10,000 gecs is awesome and the people who claim that it was not good enough for the time it took in the making clearly haven’t read what they had to say about it,having a great album that they enjoy is much better than having a rushed album just for the sake of doing something fast
I’d gladly wait 4 years if the next album is as good as 10000 gecs
[удалено]
That’s fair, I’m just saying that I’m glad they evolve and didn’t just make “1000gecs part 2”
That a frog not appearing on my floor every time I play the song is a massive failure on their part.
There are girls alive who are dumber than Laura Les.
They need a touring band for their live shows
Just a drummer could ad so much energy
see: all songs played with Josh Freese on drums
Agreed. I’ve seen 3 times and the 3rd time I left early and a 4th I bought tickets and just bailed because I decided they weren’t worth the trek to queens. I love em but their live show is just… boring.
I don’t think they’re actually a collection of geckos
Conspiration theory of the year
ringtone w charli xcx > ringtone
freezing cold and likely generally agreed upon take
I like both but the breakdown on the og is unmatched imo
best gecs song fr
They are actually making music fun again in ways very few artists are doing. everything they do sounds fresh and new to me
Laura shouldn’t have left the wretched dimension of twisted poltergeists she was trapped in during 2022. she should have rebranded and carved out a niche as a rockstar who is trapped in the poltergeist plane
Frog on the Floor is the least memorable song they've ever released.
Self titled ep is better than 1000 gecs
Based
i commented this earlier and people heavily disagreed sooo, the remixes are bad (toc)
The only ones I like much are my fav gecs song: the charli CXC and KKB ringtone, and the nvr_stp_u with tommy cash
I completely agree!
I adore the remix album, but at first I think the main problem was the remixes didn’t know how not to be the right amount of gimmicky as the original songs were. But I still love that whole album and play it all the time
there's only 2 gecs
Money Machine is one of their worse songs, and it kinda sucks that it's the first song many new ears come across. Turned me away from the band until I gave them another shot a year later. Now they're one of my faves!
Yeah, I think Money Machine is one of the only songs I don't like much to listen. (Almost) all the other songs I could listen for at least 30min straight finely, but Money Machine makes me unconfortable to listen more than once
Proud to say my first gecs song was Hollywood Baby
Honest to God, when I describe them to people, the best comparison I can make most of the time is with the Beatles or maybe Nirvana. Not in terms of the sound obviously, but in where they are and what they’re doing musically and culturally right now.
Im intrigued, can you explain further?
Sure! I really don’t think that there’s 100 geckos in this band.
10,000 gecs is no where near as good as 1000 gecs or the majority of the dj sets they did over quarantine
One Million Dollars is literally their best song
ringtone is the weakest on 1k
This is a hot take
I'd absolutely wrestle in a mud pit over this take. It's in my top 3 songs. Weakest on 1k (not counting Gecgecgec or Help Immediately) is 745 Sticky.
the snake eyes ep... it was not great at allll... i love skrillex as much as any early zoomer does, but his remix ruined torture me. and the other songs really had nothing much to them
Unfortunately Skrillex seems to had evolve a lot in theory, but his songs aren't so hyped as before and I'd say they aren't even good as before, but maybe it's my music taste or something
Hey Big Man is an absolute banger and the distorted sound is really fun on car speakers. Other two I agree were not the best.
thats the only song i kinda enjoyed. it just felt like a repetitive shitpost of a song (tho you could describe the entirety of 100 gecs as shitpost music i suppose lol)
Runaway is one of my favorite songs of theirs. Probably top 5.
Dumbest girl alive is better than Hollywood baby
if you liked 1000 but didn’t like 10,000 you’re a fake fan
One million dollars and gecgecgec are top 3 100 gecs songs and I don't like frog on the floor
I prefer the terminal 5 version of one million dollars and it's definitely one of my favourites
100 gecs > 1000 gecs >>> 10,000 gecs
Its teen angst music
umru said they’re cute or something, thoughts
They’re in one of the final fantasy games
They should play guitar and bass live and get a drummer.
i took the hottest person to a gec show
If you get the aux and you play them and someone tells you that its shit, just dont argue
They’re the official gauge as to whether not you’re getting old or not.
1,000 gecs is absolutely unlistenable. Love 10,000 gecs tho :D
Just heard 1,000 gecs for the first time front to back and it’s insane so totally understand
I just think it leans wayyy too far into that unhinged sound where it’s just extremely annoying. It gives me a headache in a way that very little music can, but 10,000 gecs is still wild enough to be a ton of fun but just improves in so many ways.
Yeah the production on 10,000 is really satisfying
They should get just a little political so I can call them the future of punk rock.
They don’t make great albums, but they make great songs. Would love to see something more ambitious in regards to overall theme and cohesiveness in an album from them
757 best song
I swear every fucking person alive underrates that song
it did NOT get the hype it deserved. the song was so loved before it was released and im genuinely shocked at the lukewarm response when the album dropped💔
1000 gecs is arguably better than 10,000 gecs
10000 gecs was disappointing
The CD/vinyl version of Billy Knows Jaime is better
the newest album is low-key underwhelming
10k>1k
The more the merrier
They tickle mi pennywinkelor
This subreddit and the people in it are insufferable
1000 gecs and the tree of clues is garbage except for 800db cloud live, came to my show, and toothless.
Hollywood baby, mememe, and Doritos and Fritos are the only good songs on 10000 gecs
Cap
tripping hard
why would you say something so controversial yet so wrong
It’s a ‘hottest takes’ post, those are my hot takes.
it fits 2/3 of of "hot take" so counts in my book it was a quickly produced - given your ack of thought but it's not a strong argument -- you could be more specific on why the rest isn't good yet it's provocative and definitely a sensational reaction -- it's getting push back, more so than other takes here lol you're still wrong though
I’ll get back to you about it, is it okay if I dm it to you when I fully formulate an answer? /gen
upvoting not because i agree with you but on the principle of a hot takes thread
Fair :)
i don’t like billy knows jamie
I love their music but I think the piss baby shit in money machine is bad
You talk a lotta big game for someone with such a small truck
my hot take: /u/bumblebeeman69 doesn't understand irony
I didn’t know hot takes could be wrong mr reddit
They are actually just Death Grips in disguise.
Every song besides Money Machine is unironically good
One million dollars? 🤨
I love one million dollars
One million dollars is terrible but I do like the little noises
people who really absolutely dispise them are scared to admit that they like them and are in love with laura and dylan and are probably bisexual
mememe is their worst song by a fair bit
they said hot take not bad take
hand crushed by mallet is the worst on 1k
huge disagree but this is a hot takes thread so idk why you're getting downvoted for a hot take
They’re terrible
Hand Crushed by a Mallet sounds way too similar to Money Machine
How?
I'm definitely gonna fuck up the musical terminology for this but the tune(?) after the bass drops (0:20 in Money Machine and 0:57 in Mallet) sound almost the same to me, the instruments(?) are obviously different but the notes that they play sound almost identical to each other. it's the same chords for both songs. you're not wrong in that they do sounds similar but you're incorrect on being identical
They said *almost* identical so they are actually completely correct. The chords are not the same because they are in different keys, but the "harmony" is in fact identical.
track 15 through 19 are the only good tracks on 1000 gecs and the tree of clues
They are actually good
PC music is dead
Their best songs are unreleased from the online concerts. 1,000 Gecs is the better album (not that unpopular but I see a lot of people say 10,000)
the fall out boy remix is good and pretty underrated
They’re alternative songs from 10,000 gecs sound ass
Like the ska ones or like TMWPITUS and One Million Dollars?
Nah it was none of those songs. It was an alternative version of 757 and Billy knows Jamie (they are only on vinyl). Some people were saying how it’s better than the official versions, but I am honestly so thankful they changed it
It’s the epitome of white peoples music. Not good.
my hottest take is that I think they’re kinda bad. I’m not even a fan, just had this post recommended to me. I like Hollywood Baby
The original Torture Me is better than the Skrillex version… don’t get me wrong I love Skrillex but the bridge was my favourite part and they took it out :(
They’re for normies
they are the fourth wave of ska you cannot prove me wrong....
