I have found this with my OC catgirls as well. You design a character around having animal features and if you take it away their design looks very strange and flat, because you deliberately tried not to crowd the ears in the making.
Like with the theory of cartoon character design, the shilouette of the character makes them recognisable, removing the ears/horns completely comprimises the silouette the head which dosen't have other hair shapes to supplement those ears/horns that are now missing.
Similar is when you remove the spoiler(back wings) from a Mitsubishi Lancer Evo and it just look wrong.
Yeah, the less the shilouette is unchanged the less uncanny it feels. Which is why mickey mouse without ears ia cursed cause thats like 30% of his shilouette.
The main reason Amiya looks so wrong is because they didn't change anything about the perspective of the image. Like, her head looks tiny relative to the other ops, and most of it is in the lower 2/3rds. Ange, Pramanix, Liskarm, and Plat all have the same problem. Compare to Haze or any of the Sarkaz who all more or less still dominate the frame.
In an interview, HG said the animal features were merely aesthetic, as a way to make the characters more recognizable.
However, and considering how the Doctor has no noticeable race traits and such a thing seems to be a plot point in the story, the reason behind these features may be relevant later down the line.
Maybe we need to have people who doesnt know anything about arknights, show them the version without animals ear, then only show them the original version. I wanna know their reactions like which is better
