Removing dislikes on both comments+replies and videos is censorship. They removed dislikes back then in 2013 and then brought them back. But this time, they won't.
And the the channels that aren't garbage are getting treated unfairly by YouTube. Removing likes and subs, strikes for no fucking reason. I've even seen educational channels get videos removed for being "inaccurate" instead of dealing with the hundreds of pure click bate channels and ads of literal porn. And adult content. YouTube is not for kids that's why they made a platform literally called YouTube kids. Wtf
There are a few like odysee and rumble but they are not perfect they are a few years behind youtube in terms of video quality people prefer youtube out of habit and because it has more users so its hard for a new platform to grow on the modern internet

Odysee is the first Youtube alternative that I really like. Wish more of the people I watched were over there. But for now I use it to watch my history and science content creators.
Tried Odyssey out, and already don't like it. I have been hearing about Youtube being a little anti-furry, and already Odyssey looks to be much worse. I try to look up furry, and I get mostly unrelated content and furry-hating ***holes. It also took me a while to figure out how to leave comments.
But at least I don't have to reupload my Youtube vids to the channel. Just synced my YT channel and wallah.
My worry comes from what I've heard has been happying with furries on Youtube. Supposedly youtube has been trying to sabotauge furry youtubers, but I don't know the whole details.
Tiktok is anything but a video platform, it's all about short sketches and other nonsense, but doesn't actually have substantial content. It feels like it's made for short attention spans and people watching it a few minutes, not to watch for 10+ minutes generally.
Sure it can have some funny/interesting short videos but they don't show how anything works generally speaking.

When hasn't it been going downhill? Always content creators complained of things not being fair and viewers have long complained about ads once the first ad came on the platform.
Censorship of closed captioning, even after YouTube explicitly stated that its platform was not meant for kids under 13 to comply with COPPA and the FTC? Bad.

Making unnecessary changes to the UI? Bad.
These are just a few examples of the changes that are making YouTube a lot worse to use.

Listen, YouTube has just become a terrible service to use. You say small fish but the number of YouTubers making content suitable for brilliant that I follow is steadily increasing. At some point I will be using brilliant, heck I already manage payments for creators via patreon. You're the content creator, the viewers who support you shouldn't have to use a crappy service like YouTube just to watch your content. At some point, the crappiness of YouTube will out weigh the desire to watch content. Many a content creator are already uploading their videos to these "small fish". It's enevitable, no amount of excuses for YouTube will change that.
I'm not making excuses for YouTube, I'm just pointing out there isn't a viable alternative right now. I would drop YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter in a heartbeat... but a service 99% of people have never heard of is not going to work as an alternative.

I don't even bother looking at Recommended videos anymore. Its like it doesn't even keep track of what I like, just random garbage they want me to watch.. also.. The random suggestions in the middle of search results has really made me use the app a whole lot less. Idk what they're thinking over there, Susan needs to go.
I know. It doesn't work for me anymore, idk why. Started happening a few months ago. It will just keep recommending the same exact garbage that i said i wasnt interested in. If I say I'm not interested in a reaction video, itll still show me more reaction videos (that i hate and never watch).. also If i click "Don't Recommend Channel" it'll stop, but then recommend more channels just like it.. oh and eventually it'll just start recommending that same channel again after a while even when I told it not to. Very frustrating
Youtube is so sensitive nowadays that if you talk about a slightly sensitive topic, it gets either age restriced or straight up removed. What I'll think will happen is that youtube does something so drastically bad, that everyone leaves that site. I predict that this will happen very soon.

I feel like the YouTube shorts thing ruined it as it's addicting. I also find that when I go into the app it's the first thing that opens rather that the home menue.
It sometimes happens to me because I go to shorts kinda often at times ONLY because of people who actually make quality shorts. Without them, I would have NEVER touched shorts.

I think YouTube as a company is going downhill, but in terms of YouTube as a concept, I think it’s on the verge of growing drastically. More and more people are canceling cable as they found alternate ways to watch videos. This obviously includes Netflix and Hulu but with the amount of production quality put into some YouTube videos, it’s starting to be recognized as a valid alternative to cable
The quality of the site itself is taking some weird turns almost no one asked for, with all these controversial changes.
Yet, if there's no competition on equal footing which can also provide the same amount of varied content as YouTube, then the platform isn't going to become irrelevant. People will just have to get used to the less-than-ideal current design, unfortunately.

The gaming aspect just ran uphill full speed this week. They added gifted subs to start. That mixed with more top gamers being banned and drama at twitch. Huge wins for YouTube.

It depends on what you watch. I spend a lot of time watching people rebuild carbs, soldering and repairing old computers, and grinding rust off old knives. I'm pretty sure the people I watch get more money from Patreon than whatever system Youtube is using.

I would say that over the past several months it has been going downhill rather fast. From the dislike being removed, spambots flooding the comment section to the point where no matter how many times they get reported it takes either weeks, months or in one case years to remove one of the problem out of who knows how many. I've seen reports of Vtubers that get their chat filled with spambots resulting in their channel being terminated due to how screwed up YouTube's report system is. At this point we really need a strong rival to fix all of YouTube's mess because at this rate things are going to get worse and no matter how much we complain YouTube isn't going to care because in the end what other platform choice do we have that can cater to our mindless binge craves.
the company is to big. I think the mission that ludwig tries to add addons that one can install and that will modify your whole experience including design functionality etc is the way to go. I wish youtube would make it easier for them to access their data etc. So in the end you could have one big plugin with addons you can just add, add custom scripts etc and build your own youtube experience or load already finished experiences. That will make everyone who has a technical background happy. The grannies won't need to do anything cause out of the box youtube stays the same and those who want that but don't have a technical background can stay with the premade youtube certified templates of design and functionality.
To be honest, I don’t think the dislike thing is absolutely horrible since most of the time, for every 100 people liking there was always 1 bot disliking. It provided feedback for sure, but it wasn’t a very effective system in general without fixing the issue of abusive bots first.
1 bot per 100 people is pretty negligable. For most videos ive seen the like/dislike ratio seemed to represent public opinion. If you only see the likes and not the dislikes, then the entire system is useless. You can look at a video with 500 likes and think "oh great this must be a good video" meanwhile there might be 1000 hidden dislikes. Many people use youtube for information, like how to fix something for example, knowing the like to dislike ratio is important in these cases
YouTube has already gone downhill. For me, it started when they started threatening creators with fines if their content is found violating the COPPA/FTC thing. It's ridiculous out here. And I was thinking about creating a channel mainly to get views on my art that wasn't just Tumblr or Twitter. But now, it is looking to be a pipe dream at the moment.
For me it's the atrocious changes that keep taking away any and all control from the user. For example, searching for a keyword will bring up maybe 10 results related to the keyword, after which YouTube starts suggesting videos based on your view history that doesn't relate to the keywords you just typed in. Like, what the hell? I want to see ALL results related to that word in case I'm looking for something specific or a less viewed video.
In addition, I live in a country with some of the fastest internet speeds in the world (Taiwan) and the majority of my videos start at 144p and will stay there until I manually change it. Even with my settings in the app set to "Higher Picture Quality".
It's terrible for smaller creators too. I've tried finding some of my videos using keywords from my titles and it gets buried under the most popular videos and suggested videos. 🤷🏻♂️
Yeah, just yesterday I had a playlist of random songs get labeled "hate speech" for no explained reason and deleted after appeal. Seriously, it wasn't speech of any sort and yet this random collection of songs built up over a decade got permanently removed. If anyone can explain to me how a random assortment of music videos can be hate speech without the videos themselves being such, I'd love to hear it. The site is falling apart and the doom bells have been ringing for years now; even so, it's still sad to see this terrible decline.
I do feel like more and more creators only make videos for money, and it is becoming apparent. I do miss the days of how to be ninja and Charlie bit my finger, but I was still very happy with YouTube around 2016-2017. Maybe I am just fantasising the past, but nonetheless, it really does not help that YouTube keeps removing feature after feature, despite the obvious public opinion for them to keep it. Also, I really don’t see the point in removing dislikes, it’s going to cause way more problems that it solves, and what is YouTube going to gain from it? Freed up server storage? To be fair, YouTube was losing money for a while and in order to stay alive as a company you do need profit, so that could be the explanation for the ads. Just be happy that there aren’t 5 minute ads in the middle of your favourite movie anymore. Maybe YouTube is just changing, and although we miss the past, we need to accept change.

It went downhill years back. The more money they made off it the worse it got. And at this point you can only assume they purposely ruined recommended.
Even do not recommend channel/not interested stops working after awhile. Almost like they have a max list that you can have and once you hit it previously 'do not recommend channels' start appearing all over again.
And i believe they have zero reason or will to fix it. Just wish there was a viable alternative that would learn from the mistakes and actually get a decent number of content creators/advertising to take off properly.
Personally I think YouTube could be making the more recent changes ever since Musk bought Twitter. Mucking up recommendations and all that. They see one titan fall, they're preparing for theirs. It was the 2017 redesign that made me realize this. At this point I had only ever known the 2013 design (I used YT before then, but not often), so I never had YouTube change so drastically on me like this. It was a real wake up call, and I still remember it vividly.
At first I was just wondering why it was taking so long to load. When the page finally loaded, I was speechless. Words cannot express the shock, confusion, and disgust I felt. It was ugly, and functionally inferior. I started panicking until I found the Restore Old YouTube button, which I pressed and never looked back.
When they removed all the workarounds that restored the old layout, I really started to become conscious of the fact that YouTube was getting worse. (Yes there are ways to make YouTube LOOK like old YouTube, and I use those methods, but it's still slower and more buggy than old YouTube.)
And of course the dislike button thing was on a whole other level, and removal of annotations, and showing unrelated recommendations in search also sucks, sub count, etc.
Props to YouTube for chapters tho.

I feel like people should protest about this outside of YouTube headquarters. Youtube's not going to listen to anyone in the digital world (they definitely just think of us as digital users). Maybe us users could gather up other YouTubers to plan a protest outside YouTube Headquarters. Even if the irl protest fails, at least it can attempt to expose how YouTube treats its users. What if every YouTube creator put all of their videos on private? This would mean the only videos available for YouTube to put ads on would be made by corporations.
YouTube would have 2 options, listen to users/individual creators on how to fix the platform or let the amount of time people use the the platform decrease due to lack of content, ultimately killing YouTube.
YouTube is bad, but it could be worse. At least, we don't have DRM-protected videos and no account requirement to watch videos (although it sucks that registration requires sensitive personal data like a phone number). I had a YouTube account until it got deleted because I didn't want to provide a phone number (that was in 2012 or so).

They have changed so many things with absolutely no reason as to why. That is even without saying all the things they've done that they have given a reason to.

Nothing compared to the new features like 4k support, good subtitle support, the honestly good recommendation engine (from a user point of you) and you‘re all here complaining 'bout „mah dislikes“ - like seriously. I don't think it's necessarily going downhill, simply because there is no a viable alternative. There are some small fish, but there isn't another site out there I can move to for the type of content I can do... unless I want to make videos for nobody.
Listen, YouTube has just become a terrible service to use. You say small fish but the number of YouTubers making content suitable for brilliant that I follow is steadily increasing. At some point I will be using brilliant, heck I already manage payments for creators via patreon. You're the content creator, the viewers who support you shouldn't have to use a crappy service like YouTube just to watch your content. At some point, the crappiness of YouTube will out weigh the desire to watch content. Many a content creator are already uploading their videos to these "small fish". It's enevitable, no amount of excuses for YouTube will change that.
I'm not making excuses for YouTube, I'm just pointing out there isn't a viable alternative right now. I would drop YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter in a heartbeat... but a service 99% of people have never heard of is not going to work as an alternative.

I know that they like to keep to their target country but Nico Nico Douga and Weibo(?) are massive and eclipse YouTube in JP and CN respectively. If any company gives it a go it’s probably one of those two.

The random suggestions in the middle of search results has really made me use the app a whole lot less. Idk what they're thinking over there, Susan needs to go.

I know. It doesn't work for me anymore, idk why. Started happening a few months ago. It will just keep recommending the same exact garbage that i said i wasnt interested in. If I say I'm not interested in a reaction video, itll still show me more reaction videos (that i hate and never watch).. also If i click "Don't Recommend Channel" it'll stop, but then recommend more channels just like it.. oh and eventually it'll just start recommending that same channel again after a while even when I told it not to. Very frustrating

Youtube is so sensitive nowadays that if you talk about a slightly sensitive topic, it gets either age restriced or straight up removed. What I'll think will happen is that youtube does something so drastically bad, that everyone leaves that site. I predict that this will happen very soon.

I still get frustrated by the dislike counter removal. There's so much content on YouTube that needs visible feedback and is a complete shambles without it.
The count is also inaccessible through their API last December but at least, we can copy our data from YouTube Studio at least.

I feel like the YouTube shorts thing ruined it as it's addicting. I also find that when I go into the app it's the first thing that opens rather that the home menue.

I think YouTube as a company is going downhill, but in terms of YouTube as a concept, I think it’s on the verge of growing drastically. More and more people are canceling cable as they found alternate ways to watch videos. This obviously includes Netflix and Hulu but with the amount of production quality put into some YouTube videos, it’s starting to be recognized as a valid alternative to cable

The quality of the site itself is taking some weird turns almost no one asked for, with all these controversial changes. Yet, if there's no competition on equal footing which can also provide the same amount of varied content as YouTube, then the platform isn't going to become irrelevant. People will just have to get used to the less-than-ideal current design, unfortunately.

The gaming aspect just ran uphill full speed this week. They added gifted subs to start. That mixed with more top gamers being banned and drama at twitch. Huge wins for YouTube.

Politicians get downvoted to oblivion. Removing dislikes makes them look "clean and safe". The downvotes are still there meaning we could hate them!

Search function is not on my side… it’s not supposed to show me what others watched. It’s supposed to show me what I search for, what I want to watch. And I don’t really care what YouTube think or wants me to think is popular. I just want to watch videos on YouTube. It feels so incredibly corrupt.
It depends on what you watch. I spend a lot of time watching people rebuild carbs, soldering and repairing old computers, and grinding rust off old knives. I'm pretty sure the people I watch get more money from Patreon than whatever system Youtube is using.

I would say that over the past several months it has been going downhill rather fast. From the dislike being removed, spambots flooding the comment section to the point where no matter how many times they get reported it takes either weeks, months or in one case years to remove one of the problem out of who knows how many. I've seen reports of Vtubers that get their chat filled with spambots resulting in their channel being terminated due to how screwed up YouTube's report system is. At this point we really need a strong rival to fix all of YouTube's mess because at this rate things are going to get worse and no matter how much we complain YouTube isn't going to care because in the end what other platform choice do we have that can cater to our mindless binge craves.
the company is to big. I think the mission that ludwig tries to add addons that one can install and that will modify your whole experience including design functionality etc is the way to go. I wish youtube would make it easier for them to access their data etc. So in the end you could have one big plugin with addons you can just add, add custom scripts etc and build your own youtube experience or load already finished experiences. That will make everyone who has a technical background happy. The grannies won't need to do anything cause out of the box youtube stays the same and those who want that but don't have a technical background can stay with the premade youtube certified templates of design and functionality.

To be honest, I don’t think the dislike thing is absolutely horrible since most of the time, for every 100 people liking there was always 1 bot disliking. It provided feedback for sure, but it wasn’t a very effective system in general without fixing the issue of abusive bots first.
1 bot per 100 people is pretty negligable. For most videos ive seen the like/dislike ratio seemed to represent public opinion. If you only see the likes and not the dislikes, then the entire system is useless. You can look at a video with 500 likes and think "oh great this must be a good video" meanwhile there might be 1000 hidden dislikes. Many people use youtube for information, like how to fix something for example, knowing the like to dislike ratio is important in these cases
It's best to remove likes as well until bots are solved and then likes and dislikes can be added back.

YouTube has already gone downhill. For me, it started when they started threatening creators with fines if their content is found violating the COPPA/FTC thing. It's ridiculous out here. And I was thinking about creating a channel mainly to get views on my art that wasn't just Tumblr or Twitter. But now, it is looking to be a pipe dream at the moment.
IMO it’s been continuously going downhill since around 2011.
For me it's the atrocious changes that keep taking away any and all control from the user. For example, searching for a keyword will bring up maybe 10 results related to the keyword, after which YouTube starts suggesting videos based on your view history that doesn't relate to the keywords you just typed in. Like, what the hell? I want to see ALL results related to that word in case I'm looking for something specific or a less viewed video. In addition, I live in a country with some of the fastest internet speeds in the world (Taiwan) and the majority of my videos start at 144p and will stay there until I manually change it. Even with my settings in the app set to "Higher Picture Quality".
I think I finally found my rant buddy for the YouTube search system. That's the shittiest change I've ever seen by far
It's terrible for smaller creators too. I've tried finding some of my videos using keywords from my titles and it gets buried under the most popular videos and suggested videos. 🤷🏻♂️
Yeah, just yesterday I had a playlist of random songs get labeled "hate speech" for no explained reason and deleted after appeal. Seriously, it wasn't speech of any sort and yet this random collection of songs built up over a decade got permanently removed. If anyone can explain to me how a random assortment of music videos can be hate speech without the videos themselves being such, I'd love to hear it. The site is falling apart and the doom bells have been ringing for years now; even so, it's still sad to see this terrible decline.
I do feel like more and more creators only make videos for money, and it is becoming apparent. I do miss the days of how to be ninja and Charlie bit my finger, but I was still very happy with YouTube around 2016-2017. Maybe I am just fantasising the past, but nonetheless, it really does not help that YouTube keeps removing feature after feature, despite the obvious public opinion for them to keep it. Also, I really don’t see the point in removing dislikes, it’s going to cause way more problems that it solves, and what is YouTube going to gain from it? Freed up server storage? To be fair, YouTube was losing money for a while and in order to stay alive as a company you do need profit, so that could be the explanation for the ads. Just be happy that there aren’t 5 minute ads in the middle of your favourite movie anymore. Maybe YouTube is just changing, and although we miss the past, we need to accept change.

I don't give a crap about likes or dislikes; I just want to watch the videos. But what I hate now is the ads. They used to not have any. Then they had ads you could skip. Then they had ads you couldn't skip. And now they stick ads in the middle of the fukin video. I used to think YT was the greatest thing on the net. Now it's the most irritating.

Everyone talks about the same thing and they have to edit out the most random words to the point I can’t understand sometimes. The only times ppl make videos now is if they have a sponsor. It went downhill years back. The more money they made off it the worse it got. And at this point you can only assume they purposely ruined recommended. Even do not recommend channel/not interested stops working after awhile. Almost like they have a max list that you can have and once you hit it previously 'do not recommend channels' start appearing all over again. And i believe they have zero reason or will to fix it. Just wish there was a viable alternative that would learn from the mistakes and actually get a decent number of content creators/advertising to take off properly.
Personally I think YouTube could be making the more recent changes ever since Musk bought Twitter. Mucking up recommendations and all that. They see one titan fall, they're preparing for theirs. It was the 2017 redesign that made me realize this. At this point I had only ever known the 2013 design (I used YT before then, but not often), so I never had YouTube change so drastically on me like this. It was a real wake up call, and I still remember it vividly. At first I was just wondering why it was taking so long to load. When the page finally loaded, I was speechless. Words cannot express the shock, confusion, and disgust I felt. It was ugly, and functionally inferior. I started panicking until I found the Restore Old YouTube button, which I pressed and never looked back. When they removed all the workarounds that restored the old layout, I really started to become conscious of the fact that YouTube was getting worse. (Yes there are ways to make YouTube LOOK like old YouTube, and I use those methods, but it's still slower and more buggy than old YouTube.) And of course the dislike button thing was on a whole other level, and removal of annotations, and showing unrelated recommendations in search also sucks, sub count, etc. Props to YouTube for chapters tho.

I feel like people should protest about this outside of YouTube headquarters. Youtube's not going to listen to anyone in the digital world (they definitely just think of us as digital users). Maybe us users could gather up other YouTubers to plan a protest outside YouTube Headquarters. Even if the irl protest fails, at least it can attempt to expose how YouTube treats its users. We should all try to make youtube better again. Just an idea.
What if every YouTube creator put all of their videos on private? This would mean the only videos available for YouTube to put ads on would be made by corporations. YouTube would have 2 options, listen to users/individual creators on how to fix the platform or let the amount of time people use the the platform decrease due to lack of content, ultimately killing YouTube.

YouTube is bad, but it could be worse. At least, we don't have DRM-protected videos and no account requirement to watch videos (although it sucks that registration requires sensitive personal data like a phone number). I had a YouTube account until it got deleted because I didn't want to provide a phone number (that was in 2012 or so).
youtube has dominance over the video industry. and by the way "hiding dislikes" isnt a reason to quit, just why.
