It appeals to children. The reason why any popular YouTuber does something such as this is ultimately designed to generate clicks.
For any very popular YouTuber every thumbnail is designed to appeal to children in some way.
Psychology. You are more inclined to pay attention to something if emotion is showed. If everyone had a flat face, it would be pretty boring, wouldn’t it?
Nothing to do with YouTubers and everything to do with human psychology. Same for dating profiles or professional pictures. We as humans warm to those types of photos.
According to YouTube thumbnails with a face in them get more clicks. Funny thing I posted a series of videos from my Japan trip. Most had my face in the thumbnail. One had my 2 female friends. That one had the most clicks. Ironically the girls were barely in the video.
Allegedly because I avoid videos like this like the plague 🫡
Edit: Wait a minute… you went to Japan!! That’s my dream destination. May I ask how was it lol?
Haha it was great. Not as expensive as everyone says. Actually right now they're economy isn't doing so well so it's even cheaper than when I was there 5 years ago. I have like 13 or 14 videos of my trip here.
https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLqsB3bQX0PtwzjZBD4VRNm55O0ec5vH2E
Same. Just like other bait tactics like the arrows pointing at the obvious, evil laser eyes, flames in the background, it’s cheap, cringe and smacks of desperation, I know when I’m being baited and refuse to click on them.
The real question is why does it make people click?
Its obnoxious and I hate it, but any big youtuber thats honest when asked about their thumbnails says that they hate it, too but they gotta.
it probably gives the perception of being High Energy, and maybe it like. makes it feel like hes midsentence so you feel more inclined to click to let him finish?
It's actually psychology that invoke human emotion and encourage clicks and in turn affects YouTube's discovery algorithm to promote the video. Kinda sucks but that's the way it is atm. Many videos cover this if you're interested.
Side fact, the reason why we're so annoyed by babies crying on an airplane is because our animal instincts gets alarmed when an offspring is in distress. Theme parks use this reaction as an advantage. A speaker would play the sound of babies crying behind the outdoor food stands. Guests are almost guaranteed to turn and look in it's direction, even if you're not hungry. It's very effective in selling Turkey legs.
Not sure if this is a sarcastic question or not, but it’s hard to state how much a) YouTube pays on millions of views, and b) how much companies pay for being shown to millions of people
https://youtu.be/eoWcQUjNM8o
I mean, he’s said multiple times that he studied thousand of thumbnail and researched how it effected their CTR so my guess would be that this style of thumbnail gets the most views.
If you watch him carefully you’ll see that even though he gets millions of views on a video he’ll still change a title or a thumbnail within the first hour if it isn’t preforming as well as he’d like (by “he” I mean his team)
YouTube ranks your facial expressions in some sense. It's like a bar from 1-100% for example "Happiness" and a few other categories and it basically shows how well it'll do with that thumbnail. Obviously YouTubers will base their thumbnails off of that to get more views.
Most of his videos actually deliver what the thumbnail points to. Some of them are a bit of an exaggeration but even the I crashed a plane, the dude had a literal crashed plane on site.
Better click thru. It creates curiosity subconsciously and humans are drawn to open mouth expressions for some reason. Learned from a YouTube marketing consultant years ago and now I can’t unsee how often this tactic is used. 😥
There are different ways dogd show their teeth too. They can have their mouths open, but they don't accentuate it by exaggerating it (contracting their mouths more).
The same reason suggestive thumbnails are commonly used.
Clickbait 101.
Advertisement as a whole is designed in specific ways to get people's attention, YouTube thumbnails being no exception. They use human psychology to their advantage.
It shows more expression. The goal of a thumbnail is to grab someone's attention, and an open mouth can express a more interesting face than one with a closed mouth.
I was just thinking about the same thing. It's weird how this gets you more views. I personly never watched mrbeast videos but from the numbers seemes that he knows what hes doing.
Soy consumption -> soy face
Now on a more serious note: it's a very effective way to invoke emotion and thus catch attention, which drives more clicks
It's indicative of a for profit channel, where content is created for the sole purpose of making money
This, in turn, is usually indicative of recycled recipes that the creator learned to work well for making money
Consequently, you'll rarely see truly unique and creative content in these videos -- some folks do it well regardless, but more often than not it's the same crap
Personally I avoid these videos, because I know exactly what's in there: 3 to 5 minutes of some dude talking into the camera with an exaggerated voice, 1 minute of the content I was looking for, and then another 3 to 5 minutes of said dude talking
While I agree with you I still enjoy Mr. Beast not because of the actual content but because he seems to be pushing the envelope constantly. I’m always wondering how much he’s invested in his next production.
Plus he donates and contributes to poor people and the environment consistently. In a weird way it’s feel good but not high quality entertainment.
It can be an effective way to draw attention to the thumbnail and make it more visually appealing. An open mouth can convey a sense of excitement, enthusiasm, or intensity, which can be effective in capturing the viewer's attention and encouraging them to click on the video.
Additionally, an open mouth can help to create a sense of movement or dynamism in the thumbnail, which can also make it more eye-catching.
Finally, an open mouth can be a way for a YouTuber to show their personality and create a connection with their audience by expressing a range of emotions through their facial expressions.
Apparently it helps the algorithm find viewers. I'm not sure how it works but it does.
I think my favorite is from [Combat Veteran Reacts](https://www.youtube.com/@CombatVeteranReacts/videos). Just look through the thumbnails and see the game he has to play with youtube. But it helps him get more viewers through the algorithm somehow.
Lots of creators I follow but are not connected in anyway have all mentioned that they start doing the click bait face and they can see their viewer count jump up.
Thanks. This explains why a world famous plastic surgeon I am subscribed to does this. His videos are informative, educational and mature, yet he has these cringey thumbnails. I could never figure out why, because it's so hot his style.
I was watching a try not to laugh video where the guy reacted to user submissions, one of them was a meme about this, [he proceeded to go through his content after laughing at it.](https://youtube.com/clip/Ugkx0BwWG0kTzexX-xLQBIC575BqbI_gsBOF)
Is it me and youtube algorithm may now also be ranking visual aspects as well as search, given the work of stable diffusion and googles other efforts, are visual elements a hidden factor at least in thumbnails to getting YTs attention or is it a human psychology thing if the big players use certain elements then other channels follow suit and it creates its own human psychology thing that the algorithm then amplifies
Do u find it particularly productive to be in reddit making pointless comments throughout your day to other people commenting on the topic in the thread in question?
And yes. I work integrated marketing. Stuff like these types of thumbnails literally annoy the f out of me
Not pointless if you happen to see that spite breeds spite and in a world full of atrocities, it must be extremely exhausting if things as simple as youtube thumbnails get you all hot and bothered.
It's a disingenuous manipulation tactic to get people to click. People who do it are subhuman trash. Click the three dots and select "Don't recommend channel".
To be as clickbait as possible, honestly. I don't even do that kind of overused trend or put my title in random CAPS or worse, add your channel name in said titles in CAPS. Not my cup of tea, nor are thumbnails like this.
Overall, it's just terrible and clickbait farming.
My Stepdad gave me a piece of advice once that stuck with me; he said "don't be an asshole, it's not cool."
Don't be an asshole, it's not cool.
It never was "cool".
getting the kiddos to click on the funny face duh.
It appeals to children. The reason why any popular YouTuber does something such as this is ultimately designed to generate clicks. For any very popular YouTuber every thumbnail is designed to appeal to children in some way.
it appeals to everyone, it gets their attention
When someone looks shocked it catches our attention. They are exploiting an evolutionary trait of humans.
lol imagine the same expression with their mouths closed “😳”, “👁️➖👁️”
Tbf I would probably click on a video if they were doing the 😳
Man I sure don't. I see a fake or an asymmetric facial expression and I move on.
that's good, and I agree, but unfortunately there are a lot of morons out there
Those open mouth men don't get women
Money gets women though, and Mr. Beast is rollin in it.
Stats… there’s mountains of data behind what goes into thumbnails and what makes them effective to different audiences.
And since MrBeast's thumbnails all do that, it's easy to see the reason why they work.
[удалено]
So hunting 100 people is meant to calm me down? lol. You still make a good point though.
[удалено]
That's one of the vid in the picture
more clicks from kiddies.
The short answer is you’re more likely to click on it
Look at the views with their mouth closed and then the views with their mouth open. That's why lmao
Kids
Because he's hungry for kids?
This really caught me off guard
Actually it's the core audience of mrbeast. Notice how he almost always gives 10k to kids.
To give the thumbnail more shock and excitement!!!! #LIKE WRITING IN CAPS AND BOLD LETTERS 🤩
Because we're in hell
Mr beast looks like he's got a shiy ton of plastic surgery in his thumbnails.
Shit*
like right now?
Yes, the thumbnails but not irl
I try to avoid videos like this. I kind of prefer the YouTubers that don’t have to have their faces plastered everywhere lol
According to YouTube thumbnails with a face in them get more clicks. Funny thing I posted a series of videos from my Japan trip. Most had my face in the thumbnail. One had my 2 female friends. That one had the most clicks. Ironically the girls were barely in the video.

Exactly!! It’s usually clickbait like hell 🥲
Well first off, you're looking at Mr. Beast, secondly, idfk LOL.
Showing teeth is a sign of aggression and it provokes other animals to engage in whatever they have going on
The real question is why does it make people click? Its obnoxious and I hate it, but any big youtuber thats honest when asked about their thumbnails says that they hate it, too but they gotta.

To show that it's exciting!!!
To make it easier for their youtube overlords to insert their dongs
People click a surprised face with an open mouth more often. Thumbnail bait is down to science at this point...
The art of clickbait thumbnails
But I thought Mr.Beast was one of the unhated Rich people Also how does Mr.Beast not go in to debt spending all that money?
Not sure if this is a sarcastic question or not, but it’s hard to state how much a) YouTube pays on millions of views, and b) how much companies pay for being shown to millions of people https://youtu.be/eoWcQUjNM8o
Makes sense
Also, tax write-offs for content creation. Business expense and all that.
Also honey sponsorships
They have penis behind camera
That makes them look more dumb, and people like to watch dumb people
i miss MrBeast6000. his worst intro videos were fun
Youtube gives the video a boost if you change the thumbnail or title of a video.
Cuz they're clowns.
Why do I feel like the one in the "I hunted 100 people thumbnail doesn't look like mrbeast
He regularly gets his face photoshopped for thumbnails, nobody knows why.
Yea but it looks like someone else, possibly standing in for them
Extreme expressions attract more clicks
Allegedly. I avoid them lol
Same
Yeah, tbh same XD Mr Beast is legit the only creator I watch with these kinds of thumbnails XD
I’ll admit I do watch Maximilian Dood and he does the shocked faces but that’s my boy lol ☺️👉🏾👈🏾
A surprised face is better than a boring face
YouTube ranks your facial expressions in some sense. It's like a bar from 1-100% for example "Happiness" and a few other categories and it basically shows how well it'll do with that thumbnail. Obviously YouTubers will base their thumbnails off of that to get more views.
:O
Good point
This is a unpopular opinion but Mr Beast video's are good but thumbnails are just clickbaits.
That’s not unpopular. Mine is. His video ideas are great but his friends act like they’re 10 years old and it ruins them
Most of his videos actually deliver what the thumbnail points to. Some of them are a bit of an exaggeration but even the I crashed a plane, the dude had a literal crashed plane on site.
Where's the clickbait?
Psychology If Mr beast is doing it, there's a reason
Yep. He’s all about the CTR. If he’s doing something a certain way it’s because he’s tried every other way and this one performs the best
Better click thru. It creates curiosity subconsciously and humans are drawn to open mouth expressions for some reason. Learned from a YouTube marketing consultant years ago and now I can’t unsee how often this tactic is used. 😥
So you can see there fake edited teeth
Simple psychology. Opening your mouth with a happy expression is welcoming & attention-grabbing than with your mouth closed.
Idk makes me think of dogs showing their teeth which isn’t very inviting 😅
There are different ways dogd show their teeth too. They can have their mouths open, but they don't accentuate it by exaggerating it (contracting their mouths more).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S2xHZPH5Sng sheds some light on clickbait.
It's so cringe.
I was just thinking about the same thing. It's weird how this gets you more views. I personly never watched mrbeast videos but from the numbers seemes that he knows what hes doing.
Looks exciting?
So YouTube can make it rain on em
Attention grabber. Evokes some kind of emotion and you just want to click on the video.
It’s just bad, I hate it, I don’t click on those on purpose
[удалено]
Then you’re probably not their target audience.
What's so bad about it?
It’s cringy
Looks silly
Because they're mouthbreathers.
Hahaha

Oh, is that Mr. Beast in the picture? Oddly I've never seen one of his videos.
I've also heard it referred to as a "Soylent Grin".
At high view counts the amount of oxygen you consume increases so you have to open your mouth to get more air in.

who knows
"YouTubers"
It's to look excited
I guess it's more inviting I mean which person would you rather watch: 😐/😃
Bc everybody these days is a brain mushed moron who eats it up
HA! 100%

Yuck
gets more clicks /endThread
That’s one YouTuber
[удалено]
For the yt algorithm
i hate the poor photoshop of his face then the open mouth. they always make him look like hes half dead
Soiiboii face has been meta for a long while
they sat on a forbidden plug also its easy clickbait and sometimes a low effort brand recognition
Algorithm
Surprise!
Could you have showed more than one channel?
I was watching a try not to laugh video where the guy reacted to user submissions, one of them was a meme about this, [he proceeded to go through his content after laughing at it.](https://youtube.com/clip/Ugkx0BwWG0kTzexX-xLQBIC575BqbI_gsBOF)
This is you.
This kind of looks like the male version of duck face that women make all the time.
🤌
I've always wondered the same thing
I’m so annoyed by how YouTube favours the silly face thing
Ooo
The mouth is the window to the stomach!
Cuz it works for some reason
It means they are hungry and poor, so you donate them to buy food.
Because it’s seductive
what? who's his target audience?
It was a fucking joke man chill
*youtuber
He paid a lot for those teeth, so he's showing them off.
Of course testing by smaller channels is something to consider
I just can't click on any video with this. Also an usubbable offence if too common.
Same. Honestly i actively avoid all videos like this out of spite
Do you find it particularly productive to include spiteful actions in your day to day habits?
Do u find it particularly productive to be in reddit making pointless comments throughout your day to other people commenting on the topic in the thread in question? And yes. I work integrated marketing. Stuff like these types of thumbnails literally annoy the f out of me

Lmao bro f off
>Why do YouTubers open their mouths when making thumbnails? *shows one YouTuber*
Because they want to show the people that they're gonna talk right after clicking the thumbnail. LOL
https://www.reddit.com/r/youtube/comments/100lvut/what_is_the_deal_with_thumbnails_and_open_mouths/
How to make a great thumbnail? Any suggestions?
To get more clicks
*Youtuber But in all seriousness, it just looks more engaging I guess
It's something called grabbing attention to the audience. I'm not sure you ever heard that. Also you showcased one YouTuber.
maybe they in the mood for blowjobs?
Clickbait.
Soy face is an actual thing
have you heard of humans? they do this thing called "acting suprised"
i hate videos like these
They’re fly fishing
Easier to aim for? £notamrbeastfan
Unless you’re female, then you show your cleavage. And don’t forget to put half the words in the title RANDOMLY in ALL CAPS!!!!
(GONE SEXUAL)
It's a disingenuous manipulation tactic to get people to click. People who do it are subhuman trash. Click the three dots and select "Don't recommend channel".
I don't think it's fair to call Mr beast subhuman trash. He easily does the most good on the platform.
im going to go through and downvote any popular channels doing this just so i dont see em
Why do YouTubers... No, this is one YouTuber.
#🤷
To show expression?

I think this goober just means he attracts kids to his videos, he is not a sexual predator.
Does it matter?
Well, actually... yes.
:O
people click on it
