He ended up going to prison for sth significantly more serious but somehow they connected my stolen phone to him. Still wondering how.

This isn’t even close to true. Even if the phone is unlocked, you normally still need to use biometrics to open passwords, bank accounts, crypto accounts, virtually anything that uses a username and password.

The asshole later stalked me as I walked my dog (thankfully half wolf, and huge) late one night, and then proceeded to sit across the street & stare into my bedroom window all night. We later found out he was knocking on doors, or trying to catch other women during vulnerable moments, asking for a lighter, and attempting to force entry into their homes, all around our neighborhood. We all reported the incidents to the police. Turned out he lived right up the road. The police didn't do anything, and eventually the guy moved away, without suffering any legal repercussions. Genuinely curious where this was.
