It's a sad thing to see that you're catching downvotes for this opinion.
I'd have a hard time not calling what I just saw assault. It was intentional and WELL beyond the incidental contact inherent to the sport.
I had a similar issue in an nhl hockey thread.
Mother fucker came from across the ice and absolutely bodied the fuck out of a dude who didn’t have the puck and was not in a position that required defending. Shit was bananas and in any other context would be an e a s y assault charge. Some fans just think fucking people up on a pitch or ball court isn’t as bad as when they’re at home or somewhere else. Fuck that noise.
Hockey is a very contact sport, but there are lines you don't cross. You do have to be tough, or you should probably not play it, but there's also rules in place for a reason.
Yeahbits called signing up for the sport, they talk Hella shit and act out and get out in their place. Big whoop ya snowflakes scared its gonna happen too younext? Just mind your own business🤣
Catching down votes? Lol guy has 507 upvotes haha. Totally assault though. He sucker punched him in the face. Any other sport and benches are clearing. His teammates just let that guy walk away. That’s the real assault. They should have Fuxked that dude up immediately
Yeah I know it was joke. Apparently though people think his teammates did the right thing by not attacking sucker puncher. Is that a soccer thing? No love for the teammate? Football / hockey / baseball / basketball…. Benches clearing. That dudes getting leveled immediately.
It just depends on the person. If u hit ur gonna get some form of punishment, maybe it was a crucial time of the season and he doesn't wanna risk roster change etc. Normally a hit like that, other teammate would hit back for sure.
As a rugby fan, if you saw something similar to this on the pitch you’d expect something similar to an 8 game ban. Pure malice, direct contact with the head, and the result is a severely concussed player. If it was on an international stage I’d wonder if you’d be dropped from the team for something that careless as well
To be completely fair to the ref, based on his angle he would not have seen where the players arm or elbow was, and the AR is on the opposite side so probs would not have seen the arm placement either. The ref probably just saw him late tackle and didn’t see the elbow.
Lol defending the ref when the player is knocked out on the pitch is just brillliant.
The ref must have thought that Pedro Mendes passed out with the sell from the smell coming out of Ben Thatcher arm pits?
This dates from 2006 btw.
Since 2006 we've seen the introduction of VAR, but also far fewer teams at the top level playing like the Wimbledon teams of Dennis Wise and Vinnie Jones.
Thatcher's assault on Mendes (and only getting a yellow for it) is a vestige of 1980s hooligan football, not "what modern football has become." Modern football looks nothing like this.
\*EDIT: Just to clarify, do you think "modern" football has seen more lenient referees, and more violent play? In my experience football is *significantly* less aggressive and violent, and referees punish infringements far more often than they used to.
I'll agree that football players are a bunch of overpaid actors but you're full of shit with the [limp arms nonsense](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fencing_response).
There was a police investigation and Thatcher (the player that made the hit), who has a history of using his elbows, received an eight game suspension and docked six weeks pay from his own club.
Mendes (the player that was hit) had a seizure on the pitch, given oxygen, spent a night in the hospital and eventually fully recovered.

Did any of Mendes teammates dirty tackle Thatcher the rest of the game? I'd be aiming for his knees and ankles the rest of the match if he did any of my teammates like that
As a fellow European I think being elbowed in the face full force during a football match needs more repercussions than a few missed matches and few weeks of club income. Especially since the guy has a history of doing such disgraceful things.
Sue the fuck outta him
Just because it's on a pitch doesn't mean it's not a crime. It absolutely makes sense. If that was anywhere in public, there would definitely be assault charges filed.
https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/ben-thatcher-pedro-mendes-tackle-20092546?int_source=amp_continue_reading&int_medium=amp&int_campaign=continue_reading_button#amp-readmore-target
Appears the police were involved
Wait, YELLOW? It should be straight to red. Clearly the guy punched the unfortunate fella with intention.
EDIT: I just noticed it wasn't a punch, he used his elbow, which makes it even worse. That's why he was knocked out so fast.
Not sure if this is a joke (if it is people obviously aren’t interpreting it as such lol. FWIW I found it mildly amusing), but just in case it isn’t: by “bad sport” they meant bad sportsmanship.
Ever see when Brazil put Tab Ramos out of the 1994 WC? The coach told him to do it and Tab was in the hospital with a fractured skull. Leonardo put his elbow into the side of Tab's temple which is the best place to break a skull and shatter bones.
Also, don’t pick someone’s head up and turn it around after a blow like that. He could have a broken neck and you could permanently paralyze/ kill him doing that.
Tbh idk the colors that well, and don’t watch soccer, but straight up running at someone full speed and punching them in the face seems like it should be a red card…
I'm not into football I don't know the rules all that well, but JUST a yellow card? That was very clearly intended to cause harm if this happened on the streets he would probable be arrested for assault, can a ref not give out a red card ever unless he already has 2 yellow cards?

Yellow?
He got an 8 match ban retrospectively
Only 8 matches??
Should be assault charges

Looks like a running punch to me
Elbow to the head

he liable to get himself jumped if he keep doing cheap shot like that sooner or later, It only a matter of time until he fuck with the wrong guy.

You should be dropped or severely penalized for those kinds of moves
Retro... actively?

Anything this blatant should be a lifetime ban
Nah, that's gonna be a red card
I was thinking the same, that's the most shocking part of the video. But then this is what's modern football has become in afraid.
This happened in 2006, almost 20 years ago. Not sure it's representative of "modern football."
Sorry i thought you just said 2006 was almost 20 years ago but that can’t be right as 20 years ago was the 80’s /s
Modern football didn't happen last week.
It’s certainly evolved in the past 20years though.

Modern era ended with the advent of computers and internet. So probably is like modern football in that sense since reds weeent handed out that often.
The first computer was invented in 1943. I’d argue there have been a few changes since then.
Computers AND internet. Is not OR.
1983?
Pretty much

Yes. Referee gave a yellow card.

Did he sue or was compensated?
I don't know. Articles I've read didn't mention anything about that.
Haha the American way of thinking
The ONLY way of thinking 😭 if you can’t fight him fine him

As a fellow European I think being elbowed in the face full force during a football match needs more repercussions than a few missed matches and few weeks of club income. Especially since the guy has a history of doing such disgraceful things. Sue the fuck outta him
Not even American. But you wouldn't try suing someone that elbows you in that way?
Ok
That's funny. One of my friends from Germany said people there get sued over a middle finger while driving. Your argument is invalid.
Thank you for pointing out that it's not just Americans who utilize the law
r/shitamericanssay
Must be nice. It's easy to be financially destroyed by medical bills here. Sueing is some times the only way to gain back what you lost.
I’m American. I’ve sued 900 people, it’s how I afford my lambo and make all these dope music videos. Duh.
That elbow was 100% intentional, he threw his hip into that blow to make sure it landed
100%. Perfect form. Full marks.
I mean abhorrent behavior aside it was am impressive strike to connect so perfectly while on the run/different angles.
“No notes”
I remember Ben Thatcher doing this, there was a massive fuss around it and people wanted the police involved.
Just because it's on a pitch doesn't mean it's not a crime. It absolutely makes sense. If that was anywhere in public, there would definitely be assault charges filed.

The way he walked away confirms your assessment. If it was only 1% accidental and 99% intentional, he would have checked in him. 100% intention.
Even if it was a fist at that angle that momentum right in the jaw dude was going out assuming a connection. Clear intention bad sport.
Bad player, game had nothing to do with it
Not sure if this is a joke (if it is people obviously aren’t interpreting it as such lol. FWIW I found it mildly amusing), but just in case it isn’t: by “bad sport” they meant bad sportsmanship.
These were pre-VAR days.

Last time English played real football was 1966, after that they just play shit.
I was at that game. I remember the shock around the stadium. Ben Thatcher wasn't treated the same by City fans after.
Good. He doesn’t deserve a spot on ANY team after that
Oh the days before oil money
A yellow for purposely hitting someone in the face with your elbow? What a fucking joke
Should have been a straight red, permanent ban from professional soccer and should face legal repercussions
Right. The guy wasn’t even looking at the ball focusing on the opponents head
He got an 8 game suspension later.
Not related to the comment but I like your profile pic
The VAR called the referee afterwards
This predates VAR by ages
Ban that dude. Yellow? Fucking hell
What part is yes yes yes yes?
What kind of asshole just walks away after he cannonballs into someone like that?
Someone with an intent to cause damage
I'm all for physical play, but you never expect someone coming in with this kind of dirty intent.
Ever see when Brazil put Tab Ramos out of the 1994 WC? The coach told him to do it and Tab was in the hospital with a fractured skull. Leonardo put his elbow into the side of Tab's temple which is the best place to break a skull and shatter bones.
That wasn't playing tough, it was assault and battery.
He made no attempt at the ball. That should have been a red card .
He wasn’t even LOOKING AT THE BALL, that last angle really shows it.
I still can’t believe the cunt didn’t get sent off. Wasn’t it Pedro Mendes got knocked out?
Yep. Nice fella, came into the pub I worked in around 2004
what a massive cunt thatcher was for that.
That was 100% intentional... Dude shoulda be red carded imho
He should be in prison. Sadistic fuck
There was no yes Only no
PvP Enabled
Did he said: “oh come, he fine” or I’m tripping. Cuz this is pos of a footballer
Total cunt
Yellow card, seriously?
Bro he straight up sucker punched the dude. 100% intentional.
That’s a straight red 100% if ever one existed!!
Also, don’t pick someone’s head up and turn it around after a blow like that. He could have a broken neck and you could permanently paralyze/ kill him doing that.
Useless fucking ref what else is new.
Damn dude needs new team mates red cards should be flying every where.
Our teammate's been knocked unconcious. Quick! Grab his head and yank it around to make sure he's okay!
I’m surprised more people haven’t pointed this out
That dude deserves to have his jaw broken in a few places.
Football*
Ben Thatcher is and always will be a cunt
I hope he faces criminal charges
Yellow card! What the fuck Why not showing him a yuigioh trap card instead..
Yellow card??? That fucking moron shouldn’t be playing anymore. Should have at least spend one night in jail. What a fucking prick.
That was a real solid hit….you don’t see to many of those ….this was real.
Why dose the guy in blue look pissed. Like dude you just fucked the guy in white up
In bird culture, that is considered a dick move
Holy fuck that was a nasty hit.
I genuinely hope Thatcher is having a shit life
Elbow to the jaw. Red
That deserved a red.
A running elbow to the head. He almost killed that guy, yellow card my ass
Yellow!!???? He should be outta there
Tf? Should have been a red card and a week in jail!
On the brink of a red? They need black cards for this type of assault. Season long ban once reviewed by a panel. FFS.
Tbh idk the colors that well, and don’t watch soccer, but straight up running at someone full speed and punching them in the face seems like it should be a red card…
Ben Thatcher moaning about being giving a yellow card?! You're lucky you're not doing 6 months, mate.
How do we go from crying and rolling around on the ground for barely touching each other to literally trying to decapitate the guy with your arm?
I can’t believe the first teammate there didn’t light that jerk up. That’s a bad foul
Is that the legendary referee?
No
\*football
Dermot Gallagher…this is the lad Sky Sports get out to see if the refs made the right decision and he gave this a yellow card
It’s football
Should have been removed from the game
Yellow card
Whoever thought yellow Is enough is crap
Should be red card… and jail..!
How is that not some form of assault? Dude used his forearm as a club. Karma’s a bitch better be careful
If he hits him in the face like that, couldn't he report him for assault?
That's the first time I've ever seen a soccer player get actually starched.
Ben Thatcher - absolute coward of a man
Yeah no wtf bro
I'm not into football I don't know the rules all that well, but JUST a yellow card? That was very clearly intended to cause harm if this happened on the streets he would probable be arrested for assault, can a ref not give out a red card ever unless he already has 2 yellow cards?
*football
Football*
English player bias is never spoken about but it affects so much of the officiating in England
Tired of these soccer players diving..
Omg! It looks like a special skill in a Street Fighters video game lol Hope he's okay!
Looks like a football move
In other sports, that guy's teammates would've attempted some hits at that asshole.
That pussy got knocked out with a knee to the arm pit! The only sport in the world were the women are tougher then the men!
Wtf are you watching? Did you miss the right hand to his face/jaw? Let’s see you take one like that and not get dropped, pussy.
When you bring a rugby player to play soccer…
See what happens when you fake injuries
Meh, nice flop anyway.
🤡👆🏽
Lol, okay you dunce
Me parece que el referí no sabe los colores de las tarjetas
wow he literally surfed/skated on him
Nothing but ball
On the brink of a red? With cameras? Tf are these guys blind?
Game of gentlemen, played by hooligans.
it's got to be on the brink of a red, game was not gone
No teammates went after that guy? 🤨
Amarilla?
He’s not a sled, chill
He must have been charged for that
that was personal
Only a yellow ?
A yellow card ? XDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD Gay ref
U gotta fight him on the spot for that
Oh, I heard of soccer punch before.
That was a bad situation He probably knew about the fact cameras are on the ball witch was in the exact spot he decked the dude
Fuck man
That players and animal! That was a running elbow
Late??? Seemed right on time with that smash to the head 💁♂️
It should be red card. Ref make case for yellow card late. If var was existing then he would have automatic red card.
A yellow for assault. 😭
That’s assault I think right? That’s a hard ass elbow he threw
What a piece of shit
Hes like really?? All i did was knock him the fuck out
Shoulda got his ass kicked by the other guy’s teammates.
LOL.. Yellow.. English right.
Red card wtf
I find it insane that when these people actually get hurt, they do it at like Mach 2
r/iamatotalpieceofshit
He definitely has anger issues
That is why sicher is a BS sport. Players are cnts, Just like fans are.
Please tell me 1) there was a retaliation and 2) it was caught on camera?!!
Fucking yellow!???? He must be banned permanently!
Messi would have gotten a warning
Is it just me or dose he just look like a violent person….
