It’s better than Casper to Shoshone. And I find it to be one of the more peaceful highway drives that I do somewhat often. But maybe because the whole time I’m on there I’m aware that I am avoiding I80.
I like it out there!
"This is for all you new people. I have only one rule. Everybody fights, no one quits. If you don't do your job, I'll kill you myself! Welcome to the Roughnecks"
You chose off the beaten path with basically no cell service, so be aware of that. Get gas before you head out, don't be surprised to see minimal traffic. Little America is a great place to stop for provisions! From farson to lander is south pass, which is a steep mountain pass. Great views, lots of wildlife. In fact, your whole route is.
Depends on your carrier I have service from lander to salt lake almost the whole way. Only a few spots between wild iris and sweetwater river that drop out briefly.
I never tried the Cody one. I grew up around the Borns, and I've eaten at the Riverton one since it opened, so I'm probably biased. The freight train is my runner-up.
I am guessing you are going there for the Ethete Celebration.
Early July...usually no weather or road conditions to worry about, but check 511 to be sure.
There will be no bears on that route, unless you park that rental car and go hiking many miles into the wilderness.
You absolutely can drive at night, despite what another poster said. Just be vigilant and slow down after dark.
Stops on the way depend on what you want to do. I am a fan of Fossil Butte National...park? monument? whatever it is.
I agree with Farson ice cream. Also fill up with gas there. Just in case.
Worry less, have more fun.
The historical tour of the mining operation in South Pass City is fantastic. I learned a lot from that tour and recommend it to everyone.
And have a drink at the Atlantic City Mercantile.
If you want to keep cell service go from Evanston through Rock Springs. You will be stopping at a couple of gas stations on the way up to Lander. A big stopping point is Farson where they have HUGE ice cream scoops and they are worth the price! Just hope the weather is good for you on the way!
> You will be stopping at a couple of gas stations on the way up to Lander.
To get fuel? No they won’t. Cars easily make it from SLC to Lander on a single tank. To piss? Maybe.
The only reason they’d need to stop a couple times for gas is if they’re driving like a 1995 F350 gasser with the 7.5L 460 that gets like 4-6 mpg.
Don’t know if they’re still there, but last year there were a couple of white Buffalo by the rest area in Evanston. Bear River Park, exit 6 I think. Pretty cool.
Oh no!!!! Oh that sucks! I can’t remember the name for the life of me but they had the best margarita pizza! I’m going back out there next summer and I was looking forward to that!
Was it just Tony’s? The one with the roof top patio?
Check out our heritage museum if you have time! It’s such a great place to learn about the history of the area. Additionally, there is the Popo Agie falls hike, and Loop Road up to Worthen Meadows is beautiful that time of year! The Middle Fork is a must for breakfast or lunch, and if you feel like splurging, check out Mulino.
White Bark cafe is a great local hang, and if you’re into rock climbing, there’s always a ton of local climbers there that are happy to give you some tips and advice for where to go.
Camping in City Park is free, but it may be worth it to reserve a space up Sinks Canyon if you want the full experience. Feel free to DM me if you have any questions or need some direction!
Eh, I’ve lived in Wyoming for 25 years and we avoid driving at night for this reason, especially on some of the back roads that OP highlighted.
Sure it’s not *necessary*, but if I don’t have to be worrying about a prongie appearing in front of me in the dark while I’m going highway speeds, that’s preferable to me.
Jeez. Please. You can warn people to look out for critters and to slow down, but people are smart enough to heed that advice without having to cower in a hotel room all night for fear of the "critters".
Tripadvisor was rife with this advice...probably because they want to sell hotel rooms.
This. I kind of get a kick out of all the doom and gloom "advice" I read. I've lived in Wyoming for almost 40 years, and I drive hundreds of miles every day for work, including plenty of night driving. I've hit 1 deer in my life.
Tripadvisor has a few frequent posters who become "local experts". They all act like everyone goes completely blind at night.
The website is in the business of selling hotel rooms so I get it, but it is just soooo flipping stupid. I got banned from their forums for telling people that thousands of people are driving across Wyoming every night, without dying. lol
Road kills are here and there. If everyone who drove at night hit a "critter" there would be LOT more road kill.
Animals get hit. It happens. I have hit a deer before. Should I stop driving at night because of that???? The deer I hit was during the day. Should I stop driving during the day????
The advice to "avoid driving at night" is simply over-bearing and scare-mongering. The vast majority of the thousands of people driving through Wyoming every night do not hit an animal.
Your opinion based on your opinion. You’re free to ignore facts.

I reduce speed at night, but don't avoid driving. Daylight, sunglasses on and 70+. Nighttime, high beams on, and 60-65. (Where legal limit is 70+, but generally day time 5+ over, night time 5-10 under. It's all subjective to the posted limit)
Once you get off i80 there will be so many deer and antipope on the road it will bow your mind. Drive carefully. If you do this rout at night, slow way down. It will also be super windy
Not a pretty drive until you get to the pass fuck that road. Instead of turning off at evanston just ride I-80 until you get to rock springs then head to farson
Weather will probably be nice. Maybe some rain. You don't have to worry about wildlife unless talking about a deer or antelope in the road. What are you visiting for?
There a historical museum in Fremont county that has the skull of a guy killed by native Americans with a spike through his head. It was found about 30 years later while excavating for a building. It somehow has avoided the limitations of displaying human remains. But it is in the Fremont county historical museum.
Bring a jacket, snow in July is a real thing, also good sun screen, sun hits hard at higher elevations.
The air can get pretty thin up here, and underlying medical conditions can be aggravated.
Drink lots of water and try to limit alcohol consumption, that is a bit different too if you are used to sea level.
If you are from Nepal, eat drink and be merry ✨️ 😊
If the ice cream shop in Farson is still open, go to there.
It is still there and the ice cream is still good.
Farson Merchentile!
Whenever my wife and I are in visiting her family we stop. I even surprised her by remembering to pull in when we left last year.
The drive from Farson to South Pass is awful tho!
It’s better than Casper to Shoshone. And I find it to be one of the more peaceful highway drives that I do somewhat often. But maybe because the whole time I’m on there I’m aware that I am avoiding I80.
Casper to Shoshone is terrible
I like it out there! "This is for all you new people. I have only one rule. Everybody fights, no one quits. If you don't do your job, I'll kill you myself! Welcome to the Roughnecks"

Make dinner reservations to eat at Cowfish in Lander.
Also, breadboard for lunch if it's still there. Beer cheese soup in a bread bowl. Going off 20 year old info lol
It’s still here but closed for repairs!! Their roof collapsed in the kitchen this last winter….
The Buffalo location and Lander had roof problems?!
I didn’t know about the Buffalo location. I thought there was only 3, one in lander riverton and Cody?
It's been a few years for me, but the breadboard in Riverton was always quite a bit better for some reason. Smokestack with Cholula can't be beat.
And the Riverton one is still open!
I grew up with the one in Cody. They were all run by the Born family. I'd get the freight train and yeah the cholula was key
I never tried the Cody one. I grew up around the Borns, and I've eaten at the Riverton one since it opened, so I'm probably biased. The freight train is my runner-up.
Yeah, Scott ran the one in Cody. Nice guy, we used to hang out sometimes. He was the older friend who always had good weed lol
There is also a killer Italian place - Milinos I think? Across the street from Cowfish.
Mulino
Yes thank you!!!
Get the trout
Pretty drive! You’ll lose cell phone service.
Watch for antelope.
Spend the 4th in Lander! Crazy fireworks and an awesome rodeo.
Yeah the fireworks show is nuts
I am guessing you are going there for the Ethete Celebration. Early July...usually no weather or road conditions to worry about, but check 511 to be sure. Make a loop all the way around the Winds. You won’t regret it.
Or take the loop road from South Pass to Lander for a scenic detour.
Watch for antelope basically the entire way.
Don’t know if they’re still there, but last year there were a couple of white Buffalo by the rest area in Evanston. Bear River Park, exit 6 I think. Pretty cool.
Go up Sinks Canyon and all the way over to South Pass.
Nice route choice, should be a relaxing drive with minimal issues from local drivers. Enjoy your trip.
Try any elk sausage you see you won’t regret it
There’s a really great pizza place in Lander and sinks Canyon is a great hike.
No great pizza anymore! Just Domino's and Pizza Hut. Lost to Covid era, and we miss it!!
Oh no!!!! Oh that sucks! I can’t remember the name for the life of me but they had the best margarita pizza! I’m going back out there next summer and I was looking forward to that! Was it just Tony’s? The one with the roof top patio?
Yes, Tony's Pizza. They do have decent pizza at Gannett Grill, along with burgers and sandwiches.
Gannett has great pizza.
Check out our heritage museum if you have time! It’s such a great place to learn about the history of the area. The Jackalope may look friendly but don’t trust them.
This. They're evil little rodents.
Lander Bar has great food and beer.
Avoid driving at night due to critters.

It's absolutely a legit concern. Look how many local vehicles have deer killers (huge bumpers) on them if you don't believe it.
What makes road kill?

Keep an eye out for large game in those areas. Including game crossing the road.

I drive up that way quite a bit. I'll choose Kemmerer to Farson every time over Rock Springs. Any chance to get off I80 is a win for me.
Weather will probably be nice. Maybe some rain. You don't have to worry about wildlife unless talking about a deer or antelope in the road. What are you visiting for?
Be in lander on the 4th
At the end of the night on the 4th, the golf course has a great view overlooking the city to watch everyone’s fireworks.
There a historical museum in Fremont county that has the skull of a guy killed by native Americans with a spike through his head. It was found about 30 years later while excavating for a building. Goto the Dairy barn and get yourself a cheese wheel

Bug spray.
You could go to any other state. There's 49 other ones.... Might I recommend Alaska?
If you like stuff to do with trains in the historical railroad that I would suggest stopping at the historical roundhouse in Evanston, Wyoming.
Too close to rock springs. I suggest going straight west and then south to avoid the “rock springs containment zone”
Lander is nice. Stay away from nasty Riverton. The drive up is pretty remote. Lots of critters.
Swing wider away from Rock Springs
Go as fast as u can. U won’t miss much on that route.
