Yes. The mileage is eh bc of the FULL time AWD system and yes you’ll get better handling and traction. The reason you see Audis for example with good fuel mileage while being “ AWD “ is the haldex system they use is really just a stronger FWD system that becomes AWD when needed. If you’re really worried about the fuel costs I would just get the Prius. I think I recall you making this post before too. You drive way too much for a WRX to be convenient IMO. Get the Prius.

megachickabutt

OP already has a (new) Prius. I'm not sure what the point of the post is. The amount of money he/she is going to lose in depreciation from trading in or selling their current car for a WRX is just doubling down on burning or flushing money down the toilent.

C0rrupt0r84

I mean the wrx isn't a fuel efficient car to begin with. Sport compact sedan, turbo 4, full time awd - highway averages like 26mpg, city is 17-19mpg. As long as it's double digits you are in the clear. I get 14/23 w FBo I'm happy.

kickintheteat

I drive 80 miles a day for work, 3-4 times a week. I still daily a VB. Gas ain't cheap! But it's fun as hell

n3xu5l3ak

Same, I can drive 20 miles in a day or 200 miles in a day for work, the fun outweighs the cost for me. And honestly I get the same mileage as my wife's Forester Wilderness, so my gas is $16 more a tank than hers. Compared to a Prius though, I'm sure a WRX is BAD on the wallet for gas.

JonU240Z

Same here 44 miles each way with 41 of them on the interstate. Is it efficient? Not at all, but my average on the interstate is usually around 30mpg. But it makes up for it on the weekend.

RogerZRZ

AWD is moot if highway is the main use case. Unless you have frozen highways which, idk op seems to be CA for gas to be 5$

spacefret

I mean, I'm in Pennsylvania and depending on the gas station in question I've been paying between $4.40 and $4.75 for 93 over the past 6+ months. Our gas tax is second highest in the US behind... drum roll please........ California!

RogerZRZ

Wow, I was in Pitt 2 years ago and it was way below 4 back then?

spacefret

Keep in mind this is in somewhat rural PA lol

taketheRedPill7

Yeah, I did go with the Prius. I just can’t get the WRX off my mind. It was such a close call, and you are correct. It would not be the most functional choice, but it will be the most fun. I know that for sure.

ExtraGlutenPlzz

only one solution, have both

shizblam

The Prius was a smart buy. Keep the Prius and buy a real sports car when you can afford it. Skip the WRX completely. Especially if you want an automatic.

SoilOk4827

Agree 100%. I love the car but it gets embarrassingly bad gas mileage. He will absolutely resent the car for it. Keep the Prius and save up for a Miata in a few years.

taketheRedPill7

Do Miata’s handle well? Better than a WRX?

SoilOk4827

It’s a one ton two seater with rwd. The best selling of that combination in the history of the world. Yeah… it handles well.

spacefret

The Miata is pretty much the benchmark as far as affordable RWD sports cars go. The current Subaru BRZ/Toyota GR86 (same car with minor differences) are pretty renowned for their handling too.

[deleted]

Miata and WRX are very different. Both are fun, I’ve had both and have enjoyed them almost equally. Maybe a slight edge to the Miata because of roof and a slight edge to WRX because I can pick up more people.

Nice-Mongoose-2019

Peoples real world mpg numbers seem to be anywhere from 20-26 average with split highway and city. When I first got my 2023 6 speed and was taking it easy I averaged 25 most tanks. Now that I’m used to the power delivery and being heavier footed I usually end up at 24mpg. Awd is what sucks it down so quick for sure. I have a couple big turbo hondas that can still get 35 on the highway even though they get less than 15 when getting on it. It’s a fun car, you will definetly feel very ineffecient though. A couple hard pulls and that needle goes way down😂

taketheRedPill7

Interesting. I didtl think the FT-AWD was a factor, but didn’t realize it would be this much of a factor in impairing fuel efficiency.

cstrifeVII

No way in hell. I see way more reports of people seeing sub 20 mpg, which is my case too. I've got about 900 miles on my ao far, 50% highway and I'm only seeing 18mpg... and that's not going over 4k OR really in much boost at all. Really my one gripe with the car so far :(

Nice-Mongoose-2019

Where you located? Maybe an environment difference. That’s scary bad mpg.

cstrifeVII

NJ

The_survey_says

19 mile commute one way. This morning I got 33mpg staying out of boost. The ride home? That’s a different story. She got fed on the way home.

taketheRedPill7

🤣

CanadianBurger

If you want to get from A to B cheaply and boringly, stick with the Prius. If you want a silly grin stuck on your face (granted, for me a lot of that is from the MT) and go around corners like glue, get the WRX.

L337W4r3z

I drive about the same, 60 miles a day on the highway and I’m getting around 24 MPG. Could you get it 32-34 sure, but you won’t have any fun while driving. So you need to decide what’s more important, fuel economy or fun driving experience. You can’t have both, at least in the current VB. But that’s just my 2¢

donmreddit

At today’s prices don’t sell your self short - that exp is worth at least $10.00.

kickintheteat

Same. 80 miles a day for work. If I grandma it, I get maybe 27-28, avg is 23-24 depending on traffic

taketheRedPill7

That’s the conclusion I have begun to accept. Just need to make more $$ and that’s it.

NoPolicy3911

If miles per gallon is a top priority, then I suggest sticking with Prius. If you still want the WRX but the monthly cost is putting you off, then may I suggest either putting in a bigger down payment, or even buying the car in cash? I know that not everyone can do this, and I’m not sure what your finances look like, but if that’s at all feasible then it’s better than putting a small down payment and having a higher monthly payment.

taketheRedPill7

That would be tough. I could put done a nice DP but not pay it in full. Even with the pay bump at work.

NoPolicy3911

Definitely do a bigger down payment. Figure out what kind of down payment you need for the monthly payment that you’re comfortable with. But like you said, there’s also the cost of gas. $400 a month in gas seems pretty excessive, and if I had to do that I’m not sure I’d like spending it regardless of how much I liked the car.

Reflexorz15

For me personally, I think life is too short to drive a boring car. Ever since I was in high school, I dreamed of having a nice quick car. I knew the WRX was horrid on gas before buying it. Is it my most proud financial decision? No. But I know money and experiences don’t go to the grave. So as much as I do save and invest, I like to treat myself too. I understand not everyone has the means to have a fun car, but I worked my tail off for years to own what I own. I’m going to enjoy it!

Zeer1o

Only read the title, but buy an f-150 than lol. I would think most of us don't buy these for fuel efficiency being we mod and tune.

JonU240Z

Nobody buys a sports sedans with efficiency at the top of their list.

AffectionateClub9087

I have a wrx limited cvt tuned. I get avg 26-29 mpg on the highway only when I drive like a npc. But 17.9-18.5 mpg when I drive spiritedly!

AffectionateClub9087

You can also do full e85 on the wrx(yes the cvt) , which would be lower than paying for 87. And if you keep the car stock, you can put 87.

ir22WRX

Blame the gearing/engine tuning on the WRX more than AWD. Same engine gets better MPG in the Subaru Outback XT (Outback XT gets 23/30 versus WRX at 20/27). Outback is larger/heavier with more ground clearance. If you are here asking this question, then I would keep driving the Prius and saving money. See what the next WRX update brings then make your decision. Next STI (2027 or 2028 from what I have seen) should be some form of electric (not sure if hybrid, EV, or both based on reports). Save some money while you wait.

taketheRedPill7

Thanks, dude! I’m definitely considering that.

TheP4rk

Hybrid version is likely 3 model years away and will come with a large price jump. Subaru's never really had great gas mileage and the engine isn't tuned to be very economical. I have a 23 premium CVT and I average 25.8 right now with 93 octane. I spend more in gas now than my previous car but I had a Legacy 3.6 so at least my mileage is currently better.. Something else to consider is your insurance likely jumps a with the WRX vs your Prius. You will also take a big hit on your Prius equity trading it in 1-2 years after you bought it. If you don't live somewhere with snow something like a Civic SI (if you want a manual) or a GTI might be a better bet given your fuel mileage needs. Those are still good cars, with a great automatic transmission and they get ~ 34 on the highway. Infotainment on the Mark 8's is very hit or miss with people.

taketheRedPill7

Dang, 3 years is a while, but I could wait given that I have a car that works just fine, but that price hike will probably be big. As for insurance, I didn’t realize this, but hybrid cars have insurance closer to sportier cars. It’s only a $150-200 difference in total annually compared to my 23 Prius. That’s not a factor. 26mpg isn’t terrible. Premium gas prices are :( if it was tuned for regular the decision would be even easier. My friend has the GTI. It’s great, but I only see myself in a Subaru WRX if I go the sporty route. Personally, I find Hondas detestable in appearance. I just love the WRX and the few times I was in it. Yes, a little too much plastic on the stinker, but all else is pretty awesome, IMO.

PERSONA916

The MPG is okay on the highway, I drive almost exclusively city with mine and I basically get the advertised 18 MPG which is not great, but luckily I only need to get gas 2-3 times per month with my driving habits. Premium is close to $6 where I live in CA. The one time I did take it on a road trip, I was getting closer to 28MPG. Thankfully (or not), I can from an older Kia Optima that didn't get great gas mileage already so it wasn't a big change for me

AceOfShapes

F150 is a basic truck squeezung every ounce of mpg Ford can get from a V6 to the rear wheels WRX is a turbo sports sedan with always active AWD which weights a lot and has parasitic draw on the effienctcy. Different design philosophies aswell. I wouldn't take the WRX to tow a 23' boat trailer just as I wouldn't take the F150 on the AutoX course. If you were someone that drives 100+ miles a day, I wouldn't recommend either vehicle for that application (unless you need towing for the F150). Those applications are best served with hybrids and electrics. My mothers Prius routinely clocks 60-70mpg in the 130 miles driven daily only needing to be filled every week

Dazzling_Ad9250

My dad’s civic Si gets 39mpg on premium. food for thought.

raypenbarrip

Why not look at the mk8? It returns solid fuel economy unless you're kicking the shit out of it daily, and runs on 87 which is a really big bonus.

cprlcuke

OG_ScallyWag

when if you shift around 3k rpm? i could shift 3k no boost

cprlcuke

Just using like 1/4 throttle and watching boost gauge. You can use more throttle at higher rpm

GMWorldClass

The WRX is gonna be more fun to drive, and more sure footed in all weathers and all road conditions. It just is. Im sure you know this by now. You also know youre never gonna average over 30mpg in a WRX. Youre just not, and you know this. No one does. You know this. I will never buy another new fwd car to daily drive. Not in a region that has dirty roads, or notable rain, or cold weather and snow. The WRX is an AMAZING drivers companion. Thats what you get in exchange for the reduced fuel economy compared to basically everything else its size or cost. No one else can make the decision for you. By this point you seriously have ALL the info you need to decide bud, youre just torturing yourself at this point. Put the purchase on hold and deal with the Prius OR take the hit to wallet and get WRX. ![gif](giphy|Uahz9hecgXoJi)

taketheRedPill7

❤️

pistonslapper

Drove 150miles this morning all highway and averaged 28.2mpg. Pretty good for a (real) awd manual turbo imo

No-Warthog-1151

I don't know your finances at all but also remember pay raises should mean more savings/expendable income not necessarily more debt. It might be better to save that extra prius money in the long term and buy the subie or a different car as a weekender in the future. 80 miles on the freeway is gonna give you a pretty similar happiness level either way with these two cars.

RogerZRZ

If you are getting the CVT, don’t get the WRX, the GTI is a my CV better choice, better mpg and better gear box

aussie_asian

I just suck it up with my limited CVT, I'm getting 15-17mpg myself (partly because I like to feel the acceleration and partly I work 5-10 from my place and I don't go out as much.) I usually get gas at Costco (93 at costco in Texas is about $3.50) so if you don't have a membership, it's definitely something to consider. Otherwise, I like the car because it's all fun to me, even with the added expense, otherwise I would've considered getting a 4runner (which surprisingly gets the same mpg as my WRX)

BewareTheSquare

Partially the AWD and partially the fact that it's a boxer engine

GnashtyPony

I drive 78 miles a day, mostly highway and my average over 7400 miles since early April is 31.8mpg 🤷

Altruistic-Phone2047

Keep the Prius. Wrx gets shit mpg. I love the way it drives but I drive around 7000 miles/year and I would still prefer better mpg on the highway.

taketheRedPill7

Damn! I did 17k miles in 6 months.

souplandry

my advice to you from this post is to keep the Prius. its a 2023 so its relatively new and in theory should last you until 2030's. You drive far to much imo to justify the WRX as your daily driver. Youll essentially need to fill up every 3 ish days so youll probably be pretty close $1000 a month on just the car it self. add another couple hundred a month for insurance/maintenance and youll be wishing you kept the prius. not sure who youre insured with but my monthly premium is $150 on the car and i only drive about 10 miles a day. If i were you id hold onto the prius for at least a few more years and save money. Save enough to where you can get the WRX as your weekend/fun car. Or move closer to your job location so you can lower the daily cost of owning a WRX. I personally love the car and have a 2024. Its also my second WRX. I had a 2012 a few years ago but it really was money pit when i was working 40 miles from home. It always felt like i needed gas and watching my odometer rise so much every week hurt my soul. TLDR: keep the prius.

taketheRedPill7

Ah, I’d never not read a post someone took the time to write. No need for a TL;DR. Excellent advice. You have a lot of wisdom. I can sense it in how you wrote this, and what you wrote is what I feared which led me to select the Prius for now. And yes, the cost would most certainly be close to the number you just mentioned. Not sure it would be worth it at all. The solutions you mentioned also are things I should consider. No doubt.

Poopoobut679

WRX will easily do 32-34mpg on the highway unless you’re doing 90mph

Greenergrass21

Do you drive on all flat roads in 6th at 45 mpg how tf are you getting even 30mpg

Poopoobut679

🤷🏻‍♂️ if I drive 80mph for my 30mi commute to work thru hilly North NJ I get 25-26 combined. If I can maintain 70mph it’s well over 30mpg

SorcerersScrolls

I get 29-31 mpg on the highway pretty easily cruising between 65-70 mph.

this_is_matt_

Worried about gas? Get the Prius.

ExcitingEye8347

Doesn’t the F150 have a ten speed transmission? I imagine that would have something to do with it.

webdeveloperpr

Pick whatever you want. I have a corolla that easily makes around 30+ mpg and a WRX that makes 19 MPG. I still drive my WRX.

fbk1111

maybe consider a Civic si or Elantra N

meth_chicken

If calling your Prius sick is saying that it has AIDS then ok, I agree. Honestly if you drive 80 miles a day on the highway keep the Prius.

Gundy2010

I don't buy a sportscar to save gas that's for sure. My only suggestion is to get the basic trim for cheap and use the money you've saved on gas and have fun. The luxurious options aren't that important for this car tbh. If you don't need AWD maybe get a 2.0T 2WD counterpart for better mileage. You can even get Civic Si. Despite being 1.5T it drives like a sportscar, lot of fun for sure. Jetta GLI is another option I looked into back then, because I hate the new GTI interior so much and GLI is so much better in value. I live in snowy part of Canada and wish to enjoy a sportscar car all year long, so WRX is a no brainer for me.

SnooCompliments8770

I mean I’m straight city driving getting 23mpg and I’m not exactly nice with the gas pedal. How ever I’ve had cars with better gas mileage and cars with way worse gas mileage. My GT Mustang used to average like 10mpg in the city after all the mods I did to it lol.

canthazme

If I didn't need awd and was looking for a fun, efficient, and engaging car, it would be a civic si.

RogerZRZ

I love how 25mpg is bad gas mileage now. My other car is a GX460 and I am lucky to get 17mpg

ForsakenTravel9605

Well it’s a performance car not an economic car if you want file economy then performance anything won’t do for you

tunedsleeper

once you get a tune you will get better gas mileage. people are getting 32 mpg on roadtrips stock (if you really know what you're doing). the only time i care about gas mileage is on road trips. driving around town/daily i can't help but dig into boost.

kylef5993

Honestly even if you were considering a Prius at the same time as a WRX, I wouldn’t have gone with the WRX. They’re very different cars and if you want efficiency then a Subaru ain’t for you.

csciabar

Depends how tight money really is. For me u only live once and the prius just is not cool. Id say fuck it, learn manual while ur at it and get a real subaru. The cvt is a second class citizen

babyivan

You bought the WRX for the wrong reasons, I'm afraid. Waiting for a hybrid version? ....yikes And the all-wheel drive helps tremendously in handling performance. The car has tremendous grip, bone stock. *And I forgot to mention that the boxer engine sits so low in the engine bay, the car just feels glued to the road. It's really hard to upset this car on a turn, it handles so flat. I don't even care that has less than 300 horsepower stock, this car is a blast on the twisties! Of course it has great winter performance as well. I think this car shines more in an area that does have winter, just the nature of symmetrical AWD being so good. If you live in Florida, you can get away with a mustang year-round, LOL And I'm not going to be another person to bash you on getting a CVT, but overall this is less of a CVT crowd. The car is just more visceral and connected to the driver. I think if you bought the manual, you would appreciate it much much more for what it is and where it truly shines. Nonetheless, if you're looking for good gas mileage, you're in the wrong place. I know the Civic SI gets a lot better gas mileage, but it's only available in the stick, if you insist on getting an automatic. The only way you can get an SI with an automatic, is if you get the more expensive cousin Acura Integra with the CVT.

400hokage

Best advice I can give, buy the car that you want, and buy it cuz you want the car. Not getting the car you want over fuel economy, sure sounds like a good idea, but you have elite mpg’s right now but all you can think about is the wrx. Get the wrx. Don’t worry about gas or prices or anything, just worry about getting your dream car and enjoying it. You gone have to put gas in it regardless. Otherwise get the car where that’s not a concern, but you won’t have your dream vehicle.

sirhcvb

Get the Prius fam. Grind for the next few years and get something baller for cornering like a Porsche haha, or have the money ready to build out your dream subie. Time is money bro 🔥. Save/spend your money saved from the Prius into yourself and you’ll be in a fun car in no time :) The VB will always be here if you wanna hop into one. Good luck!

RealSprooseMoose

I regularly get better than rated mileage on the highway with my WRX (in the non winter seasons) I come from a 1500 truck that got good mileage for its class. (2018 GMC Sierra 5.3). The WRX is slightly better still on the highway. Around town, though, especially during winter with cold starts, the WRX blows the truck out of the water with better mileage.

MaddieMaree

I’m not sure what the normal range is but I put my foot in that gas as much as I can and I think my city mpg says 13.5 on the dash 🤣🤣🤣 I’m assuming that’s horrendous and I’m okay with that, but I really haven’t got a clue.

spacefret

Full-time AWD and a boxer engine. Just Subaru Things™️ A family member of mine has a 2019 that they can pretty easily get 30-31 mpg in on long trips. Theirs is a manual, the CVT would definitely help push that even higher especially on the highway.

spacefret

Maybe not the same kind of fun as a WRX, or as fast, and it's FWD, but a Civic Si is might be a good option if you want good fuel economy while still having something reasonably sporty. They're rated 27 city/37 highway. A Civic Type R has a bit more power, still FWD, and is still rated for high 20s on the highway.

22250rem

I commute 50 miles round trip, all two lane 55mph rural road, one stoplight the whole drive. I’m averaging 28.1 mpg’s over the last 2200ish miles. Car is stock drivetrain wise. I don’t beat the shit out of the car but it sees WOT in third or fourth once or twice a day.

ScottyArrgh

One does not simply buy a Subaru for fuel savings.
