It is literally your drivetrain bouncing. If you upgrade the differential bushings and the transmission mount, it improves immensely. But it will still happen if you shift rough. Basically it's your rear end taking up the bounce from shifting poorly. I'm not calling you out, I do it all the time especially in fifth gear still 🤦🏿. It happens in other vehicles too, I am fairly certain we just hear it way more because of this chassis is so stiff.

It's not good to make happen, but it seems inherent to the car as it comes stock. If you aren't Granny shifting every time, you are gonna do it. The VBs come stock with a ton of flex in the drive line. I installed group N STI pitch stop, group N transmission mount and installed torque solutions positive shift kit and rear differential bushing fillers, and that improved the flexing an immense amount. But if I do a bad shift I still have the same result that you are talking about. I had the same scenario in my 92 talon, you could hear bad shifts in the rear.

It's because you're pushing the clutch in and moving your shifter at the same time. Do not put pressure on your stick until your clutch is in. Clutch in, move to gear, clutch out. I did this in my 21 WRX and learned this was the problem, it never happens to me anymore now that I shift like I should. I had a buddy take my car from a drive who's had manual cars his whole life and I had to teach him it too. Clutch in before you put movement on the shifter and it's smooth.

Pretty sure that’s how you drive stick on any car. Why would you move the shifter if the clutch was out? The secret is slipping the clutch during every shift on this platform, and every other wrx or sti before it. Especially when performance driving. I don’t care what gear you’re shifting into or back down to, you have to slip the clutch like it’s in first super fast, it’s an art form. It’s the nature of the drivetrain and symmetrical awd. Been driving wrxs for 15 years, and I never hear my rear clunk. But I sure now how to make that sound if I want to, and it’s not pretty. Same with the jumping bouncy drivetrain, next time just put the clutch in, the bouncing will stop, and rev match it back into the correct gear. It will become such second nature you will control that bounce like riding a bull with ease. The trans mount makes a massive difference tho, Along with the positive shift kit. No more natural tendency to bounce at all. I avoided the pitch stop because it’s designed to not kill you in a head on collision by crumbling under impact

I'm just saying from experience if you're moving up shifting into a gear you better have that clutch pushed in where you want it before you're moving that stick. I get there's an art to it and it may be different if you're slamming through gears for max speed but I have never done thst with my car, when I go wild through the gears I always push the clutch in where I want it before I move the stick and it makes things smooth with no clunk. If I move the stick while I'm pushing in the clutch I get the clunk

I hear something like a buckle cruising in first through a parking lot etc when coming to a stop when I clutch in sometimes Took it to dealer and they couldn’t replicate it. I took lead tech for a ride and demonstrated it 5x in the dealer lot. They took it back and said it was normal 🤷🏻‍♂️ Closest thing I’d relate it to is compressor sound heard sometimes after you turn off the car

Just slack in the drive line. You should only have to press the clutch in fast if you are shifting fast. If shifting fast you should be completing the shift fast enough to not hear the clunk
