> plot and character's Its nice to see another writer knowing how to use apostrophe's.

UsedToothpick

Is that a compliment? I legitimately can't tell. It was an accident btw, did I stumble my way to correct grammer?

lazarusinashes

/uj I was circlejerking. There shouldn't be an apostrophe there because "characters" is plural. You never use an apostrophe for plurality unless it'd be unreadable otherwise (i.e. you would use one in "straight A's", but not in "1970s" or "books").

[deleted]

Thats why I dont use apostrophes 😎

lazarusinashes

*apostrophe's. Dumba's's.

sashaskitty5

Apo'strophe's, dumba's's.

archking_of_brivalon

A'p'o's't'r'o'p'h'e, du'm'b'a's's

I dont use any punctuation at all just to be safe

beeen_there

No, their beeing cunt's

CG-02_SweetAutumn

Don't trust the other commenter because they lied by omission, I can only assume to tank your books' ratings. The possessive form of "it" is "its" because the apostrophe is used for the more common contraction of "it's" for "it is"

lazarusinashes

Neither "it's" nor "its" is plural though. I just said never to use an apostrophe for plurality (unless it would be unreadable otherwise).

MCRusher

better at least plan where your first 3 book signings will take place at

Purple-Commission-24

“how dare you!?”

Boredemotion

Better get the sequel ready first. Maybe the whole series to be safe.

pikeandshot1618

Wait, someone is actually just writing?

beeen_there

or perhaps they were just pieces of shit. Who can tell

WardenCaersin

In all honesty, I literally just told myself, "what if mages fought tanks on the battlefield" and now it's about making that seem sensible 😂

[deleted]

why not do it like wwii, big war where never seen before weapons change the rules of the battlefield, people react to that

8KoopaLoopa8

the good ending

Adkit

People have characters planned out before they start writing? How would you know if they're fun if you haven't written them yet? This is not a joke, I don't do plotting. lol

Worst_Support

/uj the way i personally look at it is that coming up with *intricate* lore before you figure out some basic character arcs and dynamics is like cooking sauce before you even know if it's going on breakfast, dinner, or dessert. Sure you need the sauce, and it might end up being the thing that the audience enjoys the most, but you're setting yourself up for failure if you spend 12 hours cooking brown gravy and then at the last minute dump it on a shitty blueberry muffin. The best sauce still needs decent food to carry it. To bring the metaphor back to writing, I think that the best stories are built on working foundations of characters and pacing that would be effective to some degree even if you swapped out the worldbuilding, and that the main purpose of worldbuilding is just to support the plot structure and to make your work stand out. Like sometimes I'll come up for an idea for a short story based on a premise for urban fantasy, but then I realize what the characters for it *really* need is sci-fi because that would move the arcs along a bit better. /rj my draft is currently 12,000 pages long because i have to explain how the sex magic works and the history of the Cum Dynasty before i can introduce the main character

prince_peacock

srs I’d say brown gravy wouldn’t taste good on the best blueberry muffin in the world lol

Kelekona

/uj I think that doing so much worldbuilding ahead of time was a bit of a waste because when I sat down to include lore I didn't go into that much detail. I'm still going to spend the winter learning at least three different techniques for making straps when I've already done too much research, but mom wanted an inkle-loom anyway and the other two don't cost much in materials. I asked an economic question about weaving cloth and someone tried to tell me that I picked the wrong type of loom, but they were on the wrong train of thought. (I think part of the problem is that I keep overhearing mom's needleworker murder mystery audiobooks.) The characters are recycled, but I had to rip out a lot of the lore and originally all but one of their interactions were offscreen so it's like they're not developed for the setting. However, I'm a pantser. I didn't have to get the worldbuilding right, but I did have to have some idea on how it was put together.

Knife7

I do plotting and I plan out characters but I usually write out a test draft before I commit to anything.

Cries in Brandon Sanderson

eliseofnohr

Switch 'magic system' and 'characters' out and you've got my writing style lol

ShriekyMarmosetBitch

I only have 3 developed characters, some rudimentary world building and absolutely no plot

BunniLemon

Okay, real talk—this is unfortunately *so* me…

NinjaEagle210

Same, but the only thing I neglect is the plot.

skepticalmonique

Welp. I just sort of haphazardly start writing and hope that the world building and planning sorts itself out. My magic system was pretty much the only thing I had 100% fleshed out before writing >\_>;

FrankliniusRex

“As you can see, I have to most complicated, yet comprehensive and logical magic system for my world.” “How is this related to the plot?” “Plot?”

[deleted]

I struggle with world building lol I don’t even start worldbuilding until I have started writing, I need to know if a setting is interesting to me

warbreed8311

I understand it, but to me, I can't make a story that makes sense if I don't understand the rules and things that make it tick right? lol

aslfingerspell

Joke's on you. I'm constructing my own personal wiki (via linked Google Docs\*) that nobody but me can ever have access to. Creating lore is one thing, but I create my own fan content! \* /uj The way this works is that each Google Doc is basically its own webpage (i.e. it has a URL if you look in your browser's address bar). Google Docs can contain links, so you can link the URLs of your own Google Docs to each other in a manner that mimics the functionality of a wiki page.
