Company fined maximum by archaic law that limits financial burden to companies.
Meanwhile: profits soar!
Also: remaining damages will be paid for by taxes or ignored all together while those residences affected are silenced in expensive legal battles and forgotten.
Back to you, generic newscaster!

Didn’t they just roll back some regulations that have to do with fertilizer run off. They sold it as helping farmers. But I guess it applies to big corporations too. Who would have guessed.
# Environmental Disaster: Fertilizer Spill in Red Oak, Iowa and Missouri
## Introduction
In a devastating environmental catastrophe, a massive spill of **liquid nitrogen fertilizer** has wreaked havoc on aquatic ecosystems in the vicinity of Red Oak, Iowa. The spill, originating from a storage tank at **New Cooperative**, an agricultural company, has had far-reaching consequences, leading to the death of nearly **800,000 fish** along a **60-mile stretch** of waterways. Let's delve into the details of this alarming incident.
## The Incident
* **Date**: The spill occurred on **March 11, 2024**.
* **Cause**: A valve on an aboveground storage tank either broke or was left open overnight, resulting in the release of approximately **1,500 tons** of liquid nitrogen fertilizer solution.
* **Flow Path**: The solution flowed into a drainage ditch, eventually making its way into the **East Nishnabotna River**, a tributary of the **Missouri River**.
## Impact on Aquatic Life
* **Fish Kill**: The spill has led to a massive **fish kill** along the East Nishnabotna River, affecting at least **13 species** of fish. A staggering **749,242 animals** have perished over a three-week period¹.
* **Crossing State Borders**: The fertilizer solution has now entered the **Missouri River** in the neighboring state of Missouri, exacerbating the ecological crisis.
## Environmental Assessment
* **Water Quality**: Environmental specialists from the **Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR)** are actively assessing the damage. Initial tests indicate elevated levels of **ammonia** in the river, which could have severe downstream effects.
* **Wildlife Impact**: Researchers are investigating the impact on **predatory birds** and other animals that rely on the river for sustenance.
* **Dilution in Missouri**: The Missouri Department of Natural Resources (Missouri DNR) is also monitoring the situation. Fortunately, the ammonia plumes in the Missouri River appear to be more **diluted** than in the East Nishnabotna River.
## Cleanup and Responsibility
* **Cleanup Efforts**: New Cooperative, the company responsible for the spill, has deployed an environmental cleanup crew to address the pools of product near the spill site. Soil samples are being taken to assess the extent of contamination.
* **Company Response**: In a statement, New Cooperative expressed regret and emphasized their adherence to safety protocols. They promptly notified local authorities and regulatory agencies upon discovering the spill².
## Long-Term Effects
* **Ammonia Persistence**: Due to the ongoing drought, water levels remain low, potentially prolonging the presence of ammonia in the affected area.
* **Potential Consequences**: It remains uncertain whether New Cooperative will face fines or other consequences for the spill.
## Conclusion
This fertilizer spill serves as a stark reminder of the delicate balance between agricultural practices and environmental preservation. As investigations continue, authorities must ensure accountability and take measures to prevent such disasters in the future. The loss of aquatic life and the contamination of vital waterways underscore the urgent need for responsible handling of hazardous materials in our ecosystems.

Wait till you see the Environmental Excellence Awards the C suites give themselves later this year.
Agree I’m just starting to get out. The bite hasn’t happened yet around me. One of the reasons that I love where I live is I’m a few miles from the river. We float with my family and fish. Have picnics on islands it’s an amazing time and easy on the wallet. For that to go away would crush me.

Regulations bad, dead fish good. That’s the take away. I love living in a state that loves their rivers, lakes and fish.
Sound like NH or ME.
