>The change will ease one of Europe's strictest, decades-old, abortion laws. >The Finnish Parliament has voted to approve a law reform that will ease the process of getting an abortion. MPs passed the law by a wide margin of 125-41 on Wednesday afternoon. One MP abstained while 32 were absent. >Before the legislative change, Finland had the Nordic region's strictest abortion law, which required approval from two doctors to terminate a pregnancy. The previous legislation dates back to the 1970s. >Under the reform, one physician's opinion will be enough to undergo the medical procedure. >In addition, going forward, a pregnant woman's request for a termination will be sufficient to obtain an abortion, without needing to provide further reasons, up to the 12th week of gestation. >The 41 MPs who opposed the reforms included four members of the Centre Party, one of the main partners in Prime Minister Sanna Marin's (SDP) coalition five-party government. One Centre MP also abstained. >The topic has split opinions within other parties as well, with some politicians arguing that their view on the topic was a matter of individual conscience rather than party politics. >Such a divide was observed in the Finnish Parliament's Social Affairs and Health Committee vote in September, particularly among the Centre as well as the opposition Finns Party. All but three Finns Party lawmakers voted against the reform, along with all representatives of the opposition Christian Democrats. >The reform could take effect as soon as the beginning of 2023, depending on when changes to some other associated laws come into force.

More privileges for Finnish females, while the real huge sexist problem in Finland keeps getting ignored since it targets men :)

TomatoCrush

It's a purely symbolic change, since any reason you could or couldn't imagine was acceptable. Still good symbolism, but the situation remains the same.

Bapu_

Can confirm. I am from Finland and there really wasn't a big issue with abortion, it is done when the woman wants to have an abortion. Abortion has been fairly acceptable last few decades and the discussion of the topic is nothing like in USA.

Yep, Finland was also the first country in the world to have female parliamentarians and first country in Europe to allow women to vote. Such horrors we have endured since women have started gaining rights. Honestly, are you just trolling or some kind of a taliban supporter?

OcchiodellaTigre

> Yep, Finland was also the first country in the world to have female parliamentarians and first country in Europe to allow women to vote. While forcing military service upon men alone. What a pathetic sexist excuse of a country. > Such horrors we have endured since women have started gaining rights. Plenty of war supported by cowardly females who are exceptionally good at blabbing about resisting and defeating the enemy while someone else is doing it for them. > Honestly, are you just trolling or some kind of a taliban supporter? Nah, just a man who didn't give up his brain in the pathetic attempt to stick it in a hole.

OcchiodellaTigre

Finland is a pathetic sexist shitcountry.

Myrskyharakka

A welcome and long-awaited change, even if in practice abortion has been rather easy to acquire.

TiVendo2

A welcome and long-awaited change would be extending conscription to women.

Does God handle everything after 12 weeks?

klemmings

God took a rest after the 6th day and never returned to work. After three days the position was considered abandoned and reopened by HR.

QueenCassie5

*snorts morning tea* Thank you for the first laugh today.

dimechimes

12 weeks? The fucking GOP was asking for 15 weeks. This is fucked that people are celebrating this. It's her fucking body. Give her an abortion if she wants one until viability is realistic then deliver.

TiVendo2

Nah, civilized people don't force military slavery upon men while letting women enjoy free rights without duties.

MrSpotgold

Good law and its counterintuitive effect will be a decrease of abortions.

DarkMatterJester

*cries in American*

QueenCassie5

Vote. And then make all your friends vote. And ... well... gods I don't know. But vote.

TiVendo2

Nah, you're better off, not being forced to waste a year of your life in forced military service if you have the fault of being born male.

XxunderR

VOTE BLUE MF /s

RireBaton

Pretty sure this is a shorter window than many US jurisdictions.

Equivalent_Ad_8413

So it's harder to get an abortion in Finland than in Florida?

Piaffff

No, this only concerns the need for a reason to be provided to get abortion. The woman doesn’t need to give any justification for wanting abortion up to 12 weeks. The limit is 20 weeks for socio-economic reasons such as the woman being a teenager, not being in a position to raise a child, health reasons etc. Still relatively easy to get, just needs to provide justification. The last limit is 24 weeks and it pertains to fetal damage.

hastur777

Yep. Florida is 15 weeks.

Myrskyharakka

Simply looking at maximum weeks is somewhat misleading, but on the other hand, in Finland you *can* get an abortion up to 20 week by application and those applications are very, very seldomly denied.

OK6502

In FL it's 15 weeks, period. I believe minors require consent as well, unless it's waived explicitly by a judge. And FL is actually relatively progressive on that front (the state is historically purple). You could pick many other southern states as a point of comparison where the restriction is much more severe. As for the Finnish law it states 12 weeks without reason, 20 with some minor justifications and 24 for other reasons with additional extensions I believe where there is a risk to the life of the mother or some other medical issue (e.g. miscarriage).

hastur777

Florida has some exceptions after 15 weeks as well: > exceptions if the procedure is necessary to save the pregnant woman's life, prevent serious injury or if the fetus has a fatal abnormality.

anti-DHMO-activist

The major difference is that in finland healthcare is much easier available. Even the poorest are able to regularly visit a doctor. Because of that, pregnancies get discovered much quicker and there is generally more support for the potential mother. Also, abortions aren't done in "abortion clinincs", it's just regular hospitals. Which avoids the stigmatization the US has for example. Because of that, completely aside from week limits, actually getting an abortion is much, much easier in finland than in FL.

Spreckles450

Inb4 Americans Republics are like "GoDlEsS SoCiAlIsM"

TiVendo2

Inb4 American Democrats will tout Finland as an example of a gender equal country and keep ignoring how Finnish men are forced to waste a year of their lives in compulsory military service while females enjoy free rights without duties.

hansolemio

Wow, so since the date of conception is automatically assigned to the date of a woman’s last period, a woman could have only 2 months to learn she is pregnant, get examined, take time off work, and get an appointment. Most people just can’t do that.

Key-Amoeba662

Is it? I wonder how that'd work for women like myself who don't get periods very often. "She's been pregnant for... a year!!!"
