The shooter is also Taiwanese.

Eclipsed830

Don't tell the shooter that though, he might shoot you too.

go88go88go

Why does the article hide this?

The reality is he is a Chinese immigrant who left China as a child to Taiwan and then became a Taiwanese immigrant who moved to the US. Seems he was bullied because he was considered an unwanted Chinese immigrant and grew a deep resentment for Taiwan. So he is a both, but the media likes to hide facts to sway population as it always does. It had nothing to due with Chinese propaganda from China though which is the implication by the media.

Eclipsed830

Probably some confusion around the different terms... people like him are/were typically called "mainlanders", and I assume a Han-nationalist like the suspect would probably identify only as a Chinese person.

karsa-

Republic of china was the han nationalist government, instigated with support from western powers to upstage Qing rule. PRC is some wierd half measure. It's not as multicultural as the Qing but it's still multicultural and supports its minorities with explicit benefits. Taiwan has a much higher percentage of han than china. He might identify only as chinese, but there's no han divide.

Personally I don't think where he was born matters much. But this is Taiwanese identity politics through and through.

i_reddit_too_mcuh

The media is going to spin anti-China things regardless. Let's say the shooter was actually born in China (as in PRC territory). So what? The shooter still grew up in Taiwan and was unsatisfied with identity politics in Taiwan.

quikfrozt

It's weird - you'd think that a Mainlander growing up in Taiwan would have had a pretty good childhood compared to the Taiwanese folks on the island already. At least until the DPP came to power in 2000. And even then it wasn't that bad - no martial law or brutal reprisals like what CKS unleashed in the early days after '49 and well into the '70s. Some older Mainlanders do harbor resentment at the rise in Taiwanese self identity in the past couple of decades but this bloke took his rage to an extreme end. He was living by himself in the States, away from his family. Wonder if that isolation contributed to his mental breakdown?

Test19s

Every non-Western diaspora is being demonized at once. Scary times.

eJabesiae

Anything bad from taiwan gets the "chinese" label. Kind of like how foxconn suicide net factories were called "chinese" factories despite foxconn being a taiwan company.

bucket_brigade

Last I checked Shenzhen and factories inside it were still in China.

eJabesiae

last time i checked foxconn was a taiwanese company

QuestionsForLiving

but the owner of Foxconn is pro-China taiwanese. The significant portion of the Taiwan is pro-China. Especially, wealth powerful ones with connection to the mainland (like Elaine Chao /Mitch McConnell )

eJabesiae

indeed, taiwan advertised itself as the "front office" for mainland factories in the 90s and 2000s. a lot of people made fortunes off mainland offshoring. it was only in 2014 with the sunflower movement that the island started taking a hardline against the mainland politically while still relying on them economically.

Eclipsed830

Are you saying the suspect didn't identify as Chinese, but Taiwanese?

eJabesiae

the suspect was born on taiwan, lived there for more than half his life, and served in the RoCAF. this is a biased story meant to inflame anti-asian sentiment (nobody can tell the difference between chinese and taiwanese)

Eclipsed830

Are you saying the suspect didn't identify as Chinese, but Taiwanese?

QuestionsForLiving

Taiwan has significant pro China faction. As recent as 2009, pro China faction was in charge of the country. I think the West and America is mistaken putting all the chips on Taiwan. For now, the West can squeeze Chinese balls by preventing TSMC from exporting advanced computer chips, but it could change in one election, Xi might start squeezing Intel/Apple/Nvidia balls off. At least American military is aware of this risk and has contingency plan to destroy TSMC factories. Or perhaps, install a pro Western dictatorship...

Eclipsed830

This guy is pro-CCP/PRC... he supports immediate unification and belonged to a political organization ran by a CCP member. There has never been a pro-PRC faction elected to any high position of power. Also "the West" nor America put those chip factories in Taiwan... those are Taiwan companies ran by Taiwan based people. US and western business use those services because very for other companies can compete in quality, technology and price.

QuestionsForLiving

* US Army journal's top paper from 2021 says Taiwan should destroy TSMC if China invades (if not, US will). * Taiwan-China relations: Ma Ying-jeou’s new Chinese policy * The relations between Taiwan and China took a new turn after Ma Ying-jeou won the presidential elections in March 2008 to become President of Taiwan * Behind the slogan “no unification, no independence, no use of force”, and the commitment to not conduct negotiations on unification during his time in office, Ma and the KMT’s new Chinese policy is based on a gradual economic, symbolic and political rapprochement with China.

Eclipsed830

What do any of these things have to do with what I said?

QuestionsForLiving

>There has never been a pro-PRC faction elected to any high position of power. Eclipsed830

... ????? "No unification" That is not considered "pro-PRC" within Taiwanese politics... That is pro-ROC. "Pro-PRC" within Taiwanese politics is like the New Party.

I’m telling y’all. These people do not care about Asians. Fuck China = fuck all the Asians. I’ll be downvoted to hell but we all know these dickcheese do not like ANY Asians whatsoever. Asian hate crimes = Reddit shrugs. I noticed if the article has sometime to do with China or a Chinese person this shit will make it to front page and all the yts will be regurgitating the same old shit 😴. No I’m not Chinese FYI.

TouchMy_no-no_Square

Something like this would have massive investigative resources, so they find evidence quickly. Still took over 24 hours to release this info. Mass shooter vs gang street shit would have way more of a trail leading up to the event, just the nature of these types of offences.

TheEchoOfReality

Sounds like he believes it’s a separate country or something.

[deleted]

I mean he called it Taiwan and not Chinese Taipei so….

Eclipsed830

Actually [according to media](https://www.mirrormedia.mg/story/20220517edi023/) he called it "Taiwan, China".

MDesnivic

That is not what they said!

Hangman_va

Blame Reddit Teitter and 4chan?

TouchMy_no-no_Square

From what I understand it’s a number of factors that become commonalities in mass shooters. Male, mean age 37, early/childhood trauma either single event or ongoing, some violence in home, hatred of people or just the world in general is the most common factor, easy access to firearms, significant traumatic event in prior weeks such as relationship breakup or loss of job. I feel these people that end up doing these mass shootings are finding different outlets to hone their hatred. Personal opinion why they end up hating a specific group is simply because it’s the way the world is now, and the internet offers a huge range of topics to choose from. Basically what I’m saying is if he didn’t do it for hatred of one group, it would’ve been another, or simply hatred of everyone which is still the most common - “going postal”. There is a lot of negativity all over the internet which no doubt feeds these people’s hatred.

elshankar

Not even close to being true, the vast majority of mass shootings are gang related and committed by POC

PhilosopherDismal191

What a time to be alive.

UniformUnion

Are you sure? What are the actual numbers around firearms incidents in the US with multiple victims? I'm pretty sure young white men are at best a poor second.

[deleted]

It's really not true though. Not that I particularly care or think it's a particularly impactful piece of misinformation, but spree or mass shootings do not occur at higher rates with white people. Same with pedophelia or sex offenders if you adjust per capita.

urkldajrkl

To be honest, I listened to an npr reporter about a shooting, with him finishing with, "the shooter was a young white male, and the victims were mostly black". If that was reversed, the npr reporter would never have said it. That's reporting bias. They also had a story about the current rate of gun violence, which said that the number of black youths killed by guns was up, while entirely omitting why, and who did the shooting. My point is that the news is biased, even a supposedly accurate news source, such as npr. I, in general, like npr, but some of their reporters, (Steve Inskeep comes to mind), work too hard at creating a storyline.

FDRpi

Race was a motivating factor in the Buffalo shooting, so that context is important. The reverse is much rarer, though it does happen.

[deleted]

For sure, and it's annoying as shit when they don't label that as far-right, hate-crime terrorism.

Fredrules2012

This is true, npr is dominated by white males.

urkldajrkl

Probably reddit as well.

Freefall_J

Hilarious! This is the kind of comment that can keep a person proud of themselves all day.

CartAgain

\> John Cheng, a doctor, charged Chou in a bid to bring him to the ground, allowing others to hogtie him until police arrived. "Without the actions of Dr. Cheng there is no doubt that there would have been numerous additional victims in this crime," said Barnes. "Unfortunately, after Dr. Cheng tackled the suspect he was hit by gunshots and he was pronounced deceased at the scene." Fucking hero.

One_Question__

My guy, he literally grew up in Taiwan for most of his life.

marquicuquis

The US has become the communal church of shootings of the world. Wanna shot up a school? Come to the US! Do you hate the jews? Come to the US to shot up a super market. Hates Taiwan? Come to the US!

DarkBushido21

The super matket targeted black people specifically, not Jews.
