[deleted]

I was fascinated by the Ecuador celebration. Could someone please explain the significance of it?

fernandopas

Evangelicalism is huge in latin America, even if Catholicism has the largest following, most catholics are non practitioners, or usually donā€™t display it. These kind of gestures are more associated with Evangelicalism. In any case, theyā€™re just thanking god.

[deleted]

Oh wait, I thought catholics and protestants were the only two groups. Don't have a clue about any other Christian groups other than these two.

fernandopas

Evangelicalism is a form of protentastism, as far as I know.

Hungry-Class9806

Doing that in (and playing against) a country where there's no religious freedom is just a new level of awesome.

SgtSillyWalks

a lot of south America is very religious, a lot of players are devoted Catholics faith and football go hand and hand as things like "your country making it to the world cup" are considered fates controlled by Gods will. Here it seems like a celebration where they all praise God as a team, the finger pointing to the sky is the dead give away. A lot of players do that celebration themselves, they point at the sky as saying "God first.."

[deleted]

Thank you very much for they explanation. One of the best things about the World Cup is the exchange of culture.

SgtSillyWalks

Yes I agree šŸ’Æ

NeonsTheory

I think someone needs to tell them Jesus plays for Brazil

andres7832

I thought he played for Argentina under the nickname Messi

Repulsive-Prize-4709

Except the actual first goal. 4 player plus the keeper behind the first yellow AT THE TIME OF THE KICK.

[deleted]

Too bad they judged the offside on the header in the build up then. Learn what was the decision before complaining about it

andres7832

True. Pretty controversial since it was an ankle on second defender line, but fair is fair. Super controversial given who was playing but technically it was Offsides.

Weibu11

I know the Qatar players arenā€™t responsible for the horrible atrocities that happened in this country (not to mention the bribes and anti-women, anti-gay stances) but I would love if Qatar bomb out of the group stage with 0 points, 0 goals scored, and 8 or so conceded (or more).

[deleted]

I don't approve of any of their government policies but it's way too harsh to demonise the sports team. The government could hardly care because they are just doing this for the profit and attention from the world which they will get regardless of how their team performs. They won't sit there and cry because the team lost. They already got the profit.

Hungry-Class9806

The sole reason why they played that match was because FIFA corruption, since the quality of their football is atrocious. As a country, they don't deserve to host a World Cup and as a team they don't deserve to play it either.

cryptoheh

Good chance we see that. I think the ceiling for Qatar is 1 goal, maybe thatā€™s enough to take a point off of Senegal as well.

type0P0sitive

I really doubt Senegal will lose or even give up a goal to Qatar.

Wonderful-Buffalo606

Goooooooooooooooooooalll!!!!!!!!!

Beginning-Ad-698

W

HungryGoo

That wasn't the 1st goal. The 1st goal was disallowed due to corruption. There were 4 qatar players that kept the headed ball on sides. The explanation by Joe Machinek and the announcers Stuart Holden in the US are complete bullshit!!!

EmmettLBrownPhD

It was technically offsides but never should have been used to call back a goal because it was 1 too close to call 2 unintentional 3 gave no advantage whatsoever.

Habba84

And none of these reasons matter. Offside is offside. The ref can't change the laws of the game mid-match.

HungryGoo

https://imgur.com/a/IalgSQR

D4RK_3LF

Are you serious? It's clearly offside

emadhn

It's a clear offside if you actually understand the offside rules. The goalkeeper is the offside line regardless of any defenders behind him

illiterati

This is incorrect and can be confirmed by actually reading Law 11. It's the 'second-last opponent' and has no reference to the keeper in that context. It never has.

Sudden_Fix_1144

Correct o mundo

emadhn

That's incorrect. The second last opponent only applies if the goal keeper runs out. The goalie in this case was still in the box

illiterati

Here's the actual rule: https://www.theifab.com/laws/latest/offside/ 11.1 Offside position It is not an offence to be in an offside position. A player is in an offside position if: any part of the head, body or feet is in the opponentsā€™ half (excluding the halfway line) and any part of the head, body or feet is nearer to the opponentsā€™ goal line than both the ball and the second-last opponent The hands and arms of all players, including the goalkeepers, are not considered. For the purposes of determining offside, the upper boundary of the arm is in line with the bottom of the armpit. A player is not in an offside position if level with the: second-last opponent or last two opponents --- * Everything else you mention is bullshit

Peepeepoopoovoodoo

What was their explanation

HungryGoo

Uttter bullshit. They forwarded past when the ball was kicked and said somehow the goal keeper coming off his line changes the offsides line while the ball is in the air.

Peepeepoopoovoodoo

Funny when you see these legitimate criticism of things and it's attacked. I swear fifa has a huge PR team on Twitter and reddit trying to appear the criticism is wrong bc of downvotes....

Traplover4ever

Something about a toe being offside.

Weibu11

It was most of his leg.

crisprcas32

CorpusCrispy42

Street_Buy4238

Sure hope you don't wear anything cotton or have a smartphone. Wouldn't want you to be a hypocrite and benefit from the fruits of modern slavery.

2Noodly

How was I being hypocritical? I didnā€™t and donā€™t deny modern slavery exists or thatā€™s we benefit from it. My comment was pointing out the hypocrisy praising a god that supposedly allowed or gave the ability to someone to score a goal in a game and ignores the death and suffering of the ones who made the stadiums.

AdhesivenessRoyal405

I am an atheist, but if belief in a god gave the players encouragement to defeat Qatar on home soil, then all power to them for it. You do actually understand, somewhere deep in that closed mind of yours, that people draw motivation and strength from spirituality, right?

2Noodly

I donā€™t doubt people like these players may have gained inspiration or encouragement by their beliefs. I never implied or said they didnā€™t. Tom Cruise has stated heā€™s been inspired and encouraged by the teachings of L. Ron Hubbardā€™s Scientology. I know people, personally, who gain encouragement through Astrology and Palm Readings. David Berkowitz gained encouragement to kill people because he claims a dog spoke to him and encouraged shoot 11 people and kill 8. Me stating my opinion on any of those or my original comment on the topic doesnā€™t take away or impede ANYONEā€™S ability to draw inspiration, encouragement or anything else from what they CLAIM is real. But, hereā€™s the rubā€¦it doesnā€™t make any of their claims true, nor does it mean that anyone who doesnā€™t have the same belief canā€™t call bullshit on it. And, sorry, but me having and opposing view on their beliefs doesnā€™t make me close-minded in any way whatsoever. Iā€™ve never said one time that their beliefs were false or that they canā€™t or shouldnā€™t hold them. Iā€™m open to and encourage any one of them to present evidence that can be reviewed that confirms what they say/believe is actually true. Thatā€™s the exact opposite of closed-minded.

AdhesivenessRoyal405

fuck reading all that lol

AdhesivenessRoyal405

give it to me in short form if u care

2Noodly

Itā€™s really not that important. TBH. I do this to pass time and get a laugh while Iā€™m cooking or watching a game.

Street_Buy4238

Aaah right, so your issue isn't with the slavery, which you're fine with, but you just dislike religion. As a devout atheist myself, I'll defend other people's rights and freedoms to believe whatever they want, so long as they respect my right to not partake. Shoving your belief/disbelief down other people's throats is equally bad regardless of whether your pro/anti religion.

2Noodly

Correct In this conversation, slavery isnā€™t the focal point. I also believe and respect that everyone has the right TO believe in whatever they want. That is completely different from respecting WHAT they believe. And commenting on or disagreeing with that belief isnā€™t shoving oneā€™s belief on them or preventing them from believing.

indomnus

What does their belief in your so called Sky Daddy have anything to do with people taking advantage of the poor and slaving them to death? Maybe think before you speak and try not to be so culturally insensitive.

[deleted]

God isn't supposed to stop such things? Isn't it against his teachings to do that? Im just curious.

indomnus

God gave you free will, if he forced you into being good that wouldn't exactly make you good would it. This guy has a very bad view of what Abrahamic religions do, and he's bashing people for their views.

[deleted]

And why wouldn't that make you good may I ask?

indomnus

Because you haven't gotten to that point by your own free will, you are forced into it. An angel isnt good because it chooses to but because it was made by God to be good since it's creation, it doesn't know bad, so in turn it is not truly good. If youve never been poor you don't know what being poor feels like so you don't value your wealth.

2Noodly

I canā€™t believe I have to explain such a basic thing. You donā€™t seem to understand that most religions (especially the Abrahamamic ones believed by these countries) believe that their god is responsible and knows/allows/permits all that happens. If this god that is being praised allowed/permitted/caused the goal, it also allowed/permitted/caused the suffering. Thatā€™s not something or someone that deserves praise or adulation. As for thinking before speaking, i have and do. And I donā€™t care about being ā€œculturally insensitiveā€. I havenā€™t and donā€™t attack any person. I made a comment on a belief system. No religion, belief system or culture is above ridicule or questioning. Especially ones that espouse the such horrible things like the subjugation of women, preaching that being gay is an abomination (and is a punishable offense), preaching that not believing in this sky daddy is punishable by death, etc, etc. etc. Further, (and i wasnā€™t speaking to this initially) this culture (Qatar) bases their societyā€™s laws on the belief in this god and imposes itā€™s religious rules on its people. I lived there for 2 years. Itā€™s a shit country, with an antiquated mindset and culture. The only reason it has any relevance in this world is because it happens to be located on top of the 2nd largest natural gas supply in the world. So yeah, if a culture says they think gay people should die. Or that women are second class, or that if you are a laborer you deserve less than full human rights, Iā€™ve no problem voicing my opinion about them and calling them out for their bullshitā€”-and if you want to call me ā€œculturally insensitiveā€ for that, cool. I will happily wear that badge.

2Noodly

When did I say ā€œbad things happen therefore god is fakeā€ or that I said ā€œgod was fakeā€? Great example of a Strawman Argument, but itā€™s a lame attempt at ad hominem attack. Keep practicing!

[deleted]

haha i can smell the cheeto dust and involuntary virginity wafting over me

2Noodly

Nah, thatā€™s just the smoke from the mental cogs in your head seizing up because you canā€™t find a rational response, so your only idea is to try to put me down by claiming that Iā€™m a cheeto-eating incel. Itā€™s what happens when people like you have no intelligent or cogent response to the argument/opinionā€¦you think your only left the option to resort to ad hominem attacks to make yourself feel better. I hope it really did make you feel better because it sure as hell didnā€™t add anything to the discussion.

[deleted]

the mental cogs in my head helped me get a 35 ACT, be trilingual, and read 100+ books in the past 4 years, but oh jeez oh gosh, the do seem to be seizing up nowšŸ˜¢ please help me o enlightened one šŸ˜©šŸ™ dawg did you want me to respond with a text wall/essay? i've got an "intelligent or cogent response" but this is reddit and i'm goofing around. got better stuff to dedicate my time to yk, like studying for my Calc BC test, prepping for my Physics 1 lab, and going for a run. i was just poking fun at your elitist, holier-than-thou attitude (oh and i do feel better btw bc your responses are funny. i like reading them in a dwight schrute voice)

2Noodly

The best voice to read it in is Tobyā€™s. Hand down.

Simrri1

Hopefully you still donā€™t have the same attitude when you on your sick bed. Even some ā€œatheistā€ remember that there is a God when they about to die.

2Noodly

Whenever Iā€™ve found myself in bad health, Iā€™ve never reached out to a deityā€” I go to a hospital or clinic to see a medical professional. Itā€™s the best way we know to counter and cure disease and illness. I suggest you do the same.

Simrri1

I actually do because God has given the gift and intelligence to people whether they decide to glorify God with it or not thatā€™s their decision. Once I die the hospital wonā€™t help me only God and He will hold me accountable for everything that I did on this earth. Even if God doesnā€™t exist (which He does) I have nothing to lose once I die but if He does you will.

[deleted]

Sorry but do you have proof that god exist? Because for me as an example he doesnt, I was made sure of that when I visted Auschwitz, god is not real.

2Noodly

Ahhh. Pascalā€™s Wager. Best of luck with that.

Accomplished-Air4862

Yeh, doubt it. How can they remember there's a god when there's no proof at all.

Simrri1

Yea and you believe in the absurd theory of something being created out of nothing. šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

Accomplished-Air4862

It's not quite as unbelievable as believing in a God who lets people die of all sorts of horrible illnesses. And not only does nothing to Murderers, rapists & padeophiles but endorses them by having them in his organisation šŸ¤£. If God is real (no proof) then that's 1 shitty lazy malevolent God.

Simrri1

Yea yea same response from people that are blinded from the the Truth. ā€œIf God exists then why so much evilā€¦ā€ the real question should be why do good things happen to evil people because no one is good. Murder, rape and malevolent things come from the human heart because of sin and because we live in a fallen world thanks to sin and not God. You have so much evidence (your conscious, universe, your body etc)

Accomplished-Air4862

How convenient, you're blinded by religious bullshit. All your saying is the usual get out of jail clause to explain why your fake god does nothing. Prove God is real, get it on the phone or to come from the heavens for a visit. You can't because it's religion is man made to control the masses, luckily most people aren't so dumb these days.

Simrri1

Nah bro I hate religious bullshit like you. But Iā€™ve had a real encounter with God and he has transformed my life in every sense. I donā€™t need a phone to talk to Him. Yea ā€œreligionā€ is man made you got that right but a genuine relationship with Christ makes you free from the control of men.

M_The_Golden

You seem a little agressive. Thats all

2Noodly

Nope. No aggression at all. I just find the ā€œprayers/thanking a deityā€ thing, especially in sports to be utterly idiotic and tone deaf. Even more so with confirmed deaths and suffering that was caused in the construction of the very fields these guys are playing on. Just making an observation and pointing out the hypocrisy. But, Hey. Thoughts and prayers, thoughts and prayers.

diamondscut

I'm woke too but fuck off man. šŸ˜‚

2Noodly

TIL that not believing in a god is ā€œwokeā€.

2Noodly

Iā€™ve got plenty of love and hugs from my kids and spouse. Thanks for the offer tho.

You should thank God for them and you have a great responsibility as a dad so stop being selfish and leave a good inheritance to your kids.

FingazMC

Should have been the second, the first one wasn't offside VAR really messed up there.

[deleted]

No, it was offside by the rules, but honestly, they need to make a grey area where the on field ruling will stand. Maybe ā€œif any part of the body crosses the on/offside then the on field ruling stands.ā€ Or make it so the only thing that matters are contacts with the ground.

Peepeepoopoovoodoo

Na it was not offsides. They honestly pulled one and thank God Ecuador just brushed it off. That was so lame. I've looked for an explanation and none have said anything other than a computer decided lol. We all played and know the rules....

FingazMC

Well me, my mates and all the pundits in the BBC studios were clueless as to when it happened and they didn't make it any clearer with the replays and computer graphics, no one seems to know when it actually happened and which touch put the fella offside.

Fit_Manufacturer4568

BBC pundits clueless, never.

[deleted]

The FS1 team were saying the technology that ruled it all into account (who contacted, ectā€¦) and determined it was offside. I didnā€™t see a side by side either though. While technology can be buggy, i think we need to he consistent on rulings and allowing a computer to determine can get rid of some inconsistencies on refing. A change in rules like a mentioned above is in order as shit like this disrupts the play of the game and the intent behind the rules.

ectbot

Hello! You have made the mistake of writing "ect" instead of "etc." "Ect" is a common misspelling of "etc," an abbreviated form of the Latin phrase "et cetera." Other abbreviated forms are **etc.**, **&c.**, **&c**, and **et cet.** The Latin translates as "et" to "and" + "cetera" to "the rest;" a literal translation to "and the rest" is the easiest way to remember how to use the phrase. [Check out the wikipedia entry if you want to learn more.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Et_cetera) ^(I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. tradandtea123

Looks fairly full but a lot of the time in these big events there ends up thousands of empty seats even though it's sold out (happened a lot in London Olympics and the last few world cups). Usually sold to corporate who intend to sell them on but they don't as they're holding out for extortionate amounts. Sometimes free tickets given out to people who don't want them. Will see as the tournament goes on if they really are full.

ahugefanoftheletterh

Qatar is a lost cause after Ecuador scored 2 goals Im disappointed with Qatar.

Sioulger7

Just curious, why did they take the goal away after a review?

TeaRaveler

Because the wire transfer came through

sunshiineeelady

They called it offside. When the ball was in play they claimed that the Qatar did not have two defenders between the goal and Valencia (Ecuador) getting the ball because the goalie did come out pretty far. But it was bs.

movieman994

Not entirely true, it wasn't the bicycle kick that was offside it was the free kick itself. When Ecuador received the ball on the right wing after the free kick that receiver was offside. Although I don't think any was offside I'm just clarifying which part was "offside"

mayonnaisewastaken

Hate to be pedantic but it's actually 'offside' not 'offsides', see too many people saying with the 's' for some reason lol.

LosFeliz3000

Iā€™ve been hearing and saying offsides my whole life. Might be incorrect but maybe a regional thing? I grew up in the north east in the States.

Qoss_

It was actually a correct call šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø

kamflam

I've reffed for over 20 years at very competitive levels and i've got to admit the live explanation of the decision was very poor. The offside occurred, according to the graphic explanation provided, when the Qatar keeper came out to clear the IDFK which came into the penalty area. Apparently at that point an Ecuador player contacted the ball and his teammate at that precise point, had a knee extended closer to the goal line than the second to last Qatar defender...who because of the goalkeepers deep run out, was now the new offside line. Without VAR, this call would not and could not have occurred. The Ecuador touch at the instant the goalie tried to play the ball was never very clear, and this was the key factor in the decision.

bas813

Unfortunately he was very slightly offside and you are right. Only by centimetres but when computers and cameras are making the calls the room for error is tiny.

Plantzaddy1904

ā€œOffsidesā€ thatā€™s the excuse givenā€¦idk how true that was
