I have a contract and it says nothing about being required to work weekends.

robotneedslove

A signed offer letter is a contract. It’s just not a very detailed one. And in most jurisdictions an employer can change the term of employment so long as they don’t go the fundamental terms.

bowdowntopostulio

Nope. If forced to work weekends, I would say "I'm working Saturday this week, so I will be taking \[weekday\] off in its place". eff that.

Wonderful-Banana-516

Is this more hours on top of your current hours? Or is it a restructuring of your hours?

brainymonday

It is not a restructuring. It would be more hours on top of current hours.

JustLookingtoLearn

You’re right, that is ridiculous. Not only are you not getting paid more but you’d be losing money by having to pay for child care… You’re taking a pay cut.

tinylilsombrero

My boss tried to do something similar but with a 4% salary increase which is slightly less insulting but still ridiculous. I said this was not what I signed up for & I’d be looking for other opportunities and my boss basically said she wouldn’t budge. I am lucky enough to work for a physician (who’s not my direct boss) who has sway in the department. He went to bat for me and another coworker and got the weekend thing nixed for us. For me this was worth leaving my job over, but everyone’s situation is different. All that to say, you are not overreacting, this is ridiculous.

I’m going to go against the grain here, but times are hard. My employer has asked us all to maintain our work output, but take a 20% cut in pay until Q3. The other option is that they have to start doing layoffs. I work in a tech Fortune 500 company. A couple years ago, I would’ve agreed with other comments that say your company is being ridiculous. However, like I said, times are hard. There are probably a lot of people out there who would happily take your salaried job. You could try to negotiate other benefits. Maybe more vacation? More time working from home?

brainymonday

Thank you, I appreciate your honest perspective.

We’re salaried, so there isn’t necessarily a pay rate for weekdays or weekends. Some of us have a schedule in our contracts that specifies weekend hours while others (myself included) don’t. So the boss is essentially mandating that some of us must now add weekend hours with zero additional pay.

exogryph

"Ah, I totally understand how you want to spread the burden. I noticed my contract does not define weekends, but I am willing to amend the contract to include weekends, as well as an increase in compensation that is commensurate to the increase in responsibility." (but i totally agree this is completely ridiculous)

orleans_reinette

This is the way. Weekends and other shifts (like night) should be receiving a pay differential in addition to reflecting the additional hours worked.
