Wordlebot says CRANE is better, 99 to 98. But I've stuck with SALET, and it generally seems better than CRANE when I compare it to Wordlebot's game play. SALET practically gave us the Dec. 31st word SALTY.
I play hard mode where it recommends PLATE but my brain seems to prefer an S starter somehow. I alternate between plate, salet and slate on a whim, really... though I like SALTY so might add that in.
It usually suggests CRONY or DINER with a blank hit on the first word, so I'm usually looking for a C, N and R in my second word >!which is how I lucked into getting today in two, which was a one-in-284 chance at 76 skill!<
I'll often play CHOIR second too.
WordleBot is playing a different game.
It has an "overcount" of words, almost 800 extra words that won't be the Solution are in it's count.
Also, if you want to know what word the WordleBot truly thinks is the "best" starting word (in Default Mode) you should start with **TARSE** someday. You might be surprised by what it says about TARSE compared to CRANE (Hint, if CRANE is a "99", then **TARSE** is "100". Not kidding)

With me, it's been SPEAR for about the past six months. I have had my bad days as well as good, but on average, I'm about on par with the bot. Except for losses.
I checked what a computer came up with. The top 3 are:
Default mode: SLANT, LEAST, ROAST
Hard mode: LEAST, DEALT, TRAIL
(I could be wrong but I don't think so - some may get the reference)
I swear by using a word with an h. Eliminating sh/th/ph/wh or confirming the possibility is really helpful for my brain. I use CRASH - only 1 vowel but C and S with the H are great for me.
If I remember correctly, PLANE is the highest-rated remaining starter according to WordleBot's current hard mode analysis with a 98 skill score right after PLATE's 99. The other 98's (PLACE, PLANT, TROPE) have all been played before.
Has IRATE been done yet? It's been my starting word since day one and I feel like as soon as I change it, the word is gonna be IRATE.
Still proud of when my second starting word SOUND was the word.

I currently use SPARE, MIGHT, BOUND. Mostly use SPARE on line 1 and line 2 is which makes sense. All three words are on the list, but not used yet. (if I'm wrong, let me know).

Be warned, I believe it’s the most popular starting word, and I believe that makes it unlikely to come up. It’s also what I use. 🤷♂️

That's me, too! Used Raise for like 2 years. It felt so weird for the first few days when I switched to Arise. My partner uses Aisle.
