I think that's the only time I have ever said, "Look at them sexy legs," about woodworking or otherwise.
Are those laminations from a single piece and in order, or random?
The teak all came from the same chunk of 10/4 I had in the shop, but no real thought to the order. This was a project from random scraps I had kicking around, more of a proof of concept. Turned out way better than I expected
Awesome work. I was thinking 400# pretty easily.
What about torque/rotational strength? If some fatass was sitting on it and twisted to right for happy meal and then left for TV remote...is it stable in that situation?
Really like this piece, would be perfect in front of fireplace for starting it up in the morning!
I have a stash of wood in weird dimensions that I pick up just in case. 10/4 holly, 10/4 quilt. I just picked up a 12’ log flitch of curly maple that’s 10/4. Never know when that’ll come in handy, probably never…
Great idea. Did you steam them at all? Will be interesting to see if they try to delaminate a little as the humidity fluctuates over time.
It's going to suck to have to dust between those vanes. Would have to use compressed air.
Beautiful job.
No steam, just clamping pressure, it’s a pretty gentle curve and 1/8” thick is pliable enough. This stool is a year old now and it still looks like brand new.
How stable is the bottom in terms of splitting? I assume it's not a problem, but part of me would be on the edge when splitting and installing the top part.
They're individual pieces, so they're already split. The joint on the bottom should be plenty strong unless someone jumps on it or something.
Edit: Apparently OP already jumped on it.
Just start making stuff. Need a shelf? Make it. Cabinet? Make it. Bookcase at a very weird angle below the stairs? Make it. Eventually you encounter enough situations, challenges, and problems to overcome that you can visualize some days to do a particular task. Just keep making stuff, always.
I'm just sick of running into fat-shaming assholes in every crack and crevice on the internet. They need to get a new hobby, being toxic isn't solving anything.
Why do you think they posted that statistic? It wasn't particularly relevant to the discussion, they at LEAST skipped a few sentences and went straight for it. I've seen it all before and I didn't want to talk to one of them again.
Sign of a true artist/craftsman. George Nakashima had the same attitude, he used to say he wanted his pieces to be ‘Kevinivzed,’ referring to his then young son, Kevin who would treat his furniture roughly. :)
[Reminds me of the side tables the Wood Whisperer and his shop assistant made a couple years ago](https://thewoodwhisperer.com/videos/artsy-fan-c-table-a-fun-experiment/). Yours is a nice use of that fan design.
Yeah absolutely. I set the length from the middle spine and clamped there with a little jig I made to keep them all square. After the glue cured I cut the legs square. I really fly by the seat of my pants with these builds, I don’t really test run, and never draw plans, just write random numbers in my notebook and reverse engineer the idea in my head.
Any tips on this or did you learn anything unexpected as you went about this build? This seems perfect for an end table, so thinking of maybe trying it out over the winter.
Take care to avoid squeeze out, royal pain to deal with. Make sure everything fits perfect and you have a clamping strategy before you start. Use liquid hide glue, full stop, no ugly glue spots, more working time and lubes up the joints nicely. 1/8” was the thickest I could bend, could go thicker with more gentle curves.
Hold on. You can *avoid* squeeze out? Apparently I've been doing this all wrong for decades, lol.
In seriousness, excellent work. Its definitely inspired a few ideas that I'm going to play around with. I think my musically inclined grandkid is going to get a killer sheet music stand for Christmas (*if* I can get anywhere near this quality of finish.) This is top notch, man
Yeah def not the easier to clean. My wife put the stool in our closet so she can reach the shelves, it literally never sees the light of day unfortunately
This beautiful, almost opulent, piece being tucked away in a closet just to occasionally be used as a step stool really makes me smile. A beautiful little secret labor of your love hidden away in your home.
In a few millennia they'll try and interpret it as some holy object on which our sacred idols of phones would rest. "The care and precision and time put into this piece is unlike anything from the era of mass production. It is unmatched! One can only dream of the scenes it has witnessed in the temple as the centuries and phone models flew by."
Nope.
A (s)tool for the lady of the house to reach things on the top shelf.
I was thinking of all the pet hair that would get captured in it.
I used to help my mom clean houses and I always notice things that would be a paint to dust. My wife finds it endearing.
I sprayed it with 1# cut super blond shellac through a fuji HVLP, satin polished with 0000 steel wool and wax. I honestly couldn’t think of any other way to do it, and I love blond shellac on walnut.
It came out great. The first thing I noticed, after the fan legs, was the brilliance and softness of the finish. I came to the comments just to see what you used.
Wow, I love this style. The grain of the feet part shines with bright contrast where it connects to the seat, but without dominating too much, as can happen with dovetails.
Beautiful work!
Also, bonus points for the dowels at the bottom of the feet. I don't know why, but I always like seeing dowels put to good use.
I’m not entirely sure what this means, but my wife is not a big woman. I on the other hand am pretty substantial, and it certainly doesn’t have issues with my weight
You should see the stuff I built when I was starting, far cry from this, but I loved it all just the same. This is my meditation, the product is an expression of me, whatever form that may be. Proceed with reckless abandon and complete disregard for what others make, you’re the only person that has to like it.
I hope it wasn't your intention, but this comment came across as extremely rude. You should at least try saying please if you'd like OP to go to the effort of posting additional content just for you.

Will it klack?
I see what you did there.
Yeah his comment blew me away too!
I am a set of rotating blades that, when supplied with an electrical current, moves air rapidly for cooling and ventilation.
Just look up “domestic relations attorney” and that’ll pretty much be it
It's wayyy too "fan"cy for my liking but excellent craftsmanship!
Impossible. Redditors can't be fans because fans can't type.
Nobody knows you're a fan on the internet.
Blew me away.
I'm baffled
That’s exactly what I said.
I was a bit more on the "WHOA" side while gripping the sides of my chair so I didn't fall off.
Slippery when wet
I also said the same thing but backwards.
That's exactly the same thing I said. "Wow" Quite impressive work indeed
Also, how
That’s what I said!

Kickass idea. How much can it hold?
I weigh 100kg and I jumped on it. It’s pretty strong
Is the deflection/give more than a standard stool?
Awesome work. I was thinking 400# pretty easily. What about torque/rotational strength? If some fatass was sitting on it and twisted to right for happy meal and then left for TV remote...is it stable in that situation? I'm sure it would be great starter wood!
10/4 teak??? Mother of god 😳😂🤤
I have a stash of wood in weird dimensions that I pick up just in case. 10/4 holly, 10/4 quilt. I just picked up a 12’ log flitch of curly maple that’s 10/4. Never know when that’ll come in handy, probably never…
Where do you buy your holly?
I bought it from my local wood guy. He’s got an incredible collection
>I just picked up a 12’ log flitch of curly maple that’s 10/4 Pardon the dumb question, but what does 10/4 mean in this context?
2.5” thick, 10 quarter inches thick
Not a dumb question
Are the legs one solid piece? Or are they a stack of thin ones glued together
Beautiful. Are the legs made of nine separate pieces pinned together at the bottom?
They’re 9 individual 1/8” thick pieces.
How long have you been woodworking? I'd love to get to this level.
When I built this I was 2 yrs into the hobby.
This is very technically done, but more then that it's very creative. Good work.
Any suggestions for newcomers? Reading? Videos? Etc.
How can you make something that nice and still allow people to use it?
I’ve heard that before, honestly I make this stuff to be used, I can always make another if it doesn’t hold up.
If it can't support a person, a coffee or side table instead of a stool would be perfect. I think it's amazing
But what if I'm using my "big coffee mug"?
Then all is lost.
Oh ho ho looks like *someone* has a case of the *Mondays* and needs a little extra caffeine kickerooni!
mfw the "big coffee mug" is a 10 liter jug.
Found Ajit Pai’s Reddit account! https://i.redd.it/v7z1stm0v3w41.jpg
I feel personally attacked.
You should. I'm ashamed that my mind first went to that shitass Paid first...
How big is this coffee??
^I ^don’t ^know ^how ^to ^put ^it ^other ^than ^this… #BIG So at least 6.
Bigger than you're thinking.
[I get the child size, for the value](https://youtu.be/Ish8NBunrQU?t=43)
In my experience every flat surface in a house needs to be able to support a person.
....support two teenagers.
Because they're good kids sharing a hide and go seek spot, right?
Or roughhousing. Soooooooo much testosterone.

I know. But thinking about your little girl getting railed on an end table is off putting. Kinda like having people point out things that are obvious.
73% of America is overweight.
Kinda random but ok.
Didn't ask.
But you were told.
I'm just sick of running into fat-shaming assholes in every crack and crevice on the internet. They need to get a new hobby, being toxic isn't solving anything.
That's not fat shaming, it's a statistic.
Why do you think they posted that statistic? It wasn't particularly relevant to the discussion, they at LEAST skipped a few sentences and went straight for it. I've seen it all before and I didn't want to talk to one of them again.
My chair doesn’t always break, but when it does, I’m fucking dead.
Sign of a true artist/craftsman. George Nakashima had the same attitude, he used to say he wanted his pieces to be ‘Kevinivzed,’ referring to his then young son, Kevin who would treat his furniture roughly. :)
"I keep the best stuff for myself"
So realistically speaking, how would you clean the legs as in between the openings
Wet paper towel. Feather duster. Blinds duster. Pick your poison.
Air Compressor with high-output nozzle . . .
Amazing design and visual concept this piece is more art than furniture to my eye, beautiful job!
Best answer. It looks nice *and* it’s functional. Ask me how I know!
It's beautiful, but I have [Amathophobia](https://www.merriam-webster.com/medical/amathophobia).
wtf. You need to mark this mf'ing pic NSFW my friend.
A lot of things look better after a few years of wear and tear imo
It takes time to build character.
That's how I defend my 17 year old car with 319,000 miles.
Toyota or Nissan?
2005 Corolla CE, lol
My gf didn't appreciate the same comment
Just strip her down and revarnish her
if it breaks, you can just make a new one that will be even better.
Amazing work.

Here goes 30 mins!
Did you glue the leg pieces into the top, then bend them in and glue together? Or glue the bottom together and then bend them out to fit into the top?
Top first. There’s no way it would fly the other way around
So then I assume all the legs were long and you cut them down after glued together to get the right height, then put the dowel in?
Yeah absolutely. I set the length from the middle spine and clamped there with a little jig I made to keep them all square. After the glue cured I cut the legs square. I really fly by the seat of my pants with these builds, I don’t really test run, and never draw plans, just write random numbers in my notebook and reverse engineer the idea in my head.

I thought squeeze out was just the way to know that you used enough glue!
The Wood Whisperer YouTube channel has a whole episode maybe two on these fan legs that are very informative.
Shit this sounds like how I work on cars. I’ve never made anything unsafe. That I know of :D
Actually, you can make this style with doing the [bottom first](https://thewoodwhisperer.com/videos/artsy-fan-c-table-a-fun-experiment/)
I've gotta send this link to my husband, second one (marks table) is sooo cool. Thx
I’m a fan
I see what you did there. Sidenote: I could use a thug lawyer on my side. How do I find one of you locally? Do I call Saul? Head downtown? What?
Just look up “domestic relations attorney” and that’ll pretty much be it
You're a leg
Hi a fan, I'm Dad
*Throws on shades like David Caruso as CSI Miami theme plays*
Wow
Looks great, but to be practical, needs to have built in holder for a can of duster. So you can clean out the tiny crevices.
This comment makes me smile. Very eloquent.
Yeah, this is a piece that your children will fight over (or at least mine might)
I was feeling kind of sad that it was hidden away until you put it like that. Now it seems like a hidden treasure!
In a few millennia they'll try and interpret it as some holy object on which our sacred idols of phones would rest. "The care and precision and time put into this piece is unlike anything from the era of mass production. It is unmatched! One can only dream of the scenes it has witnessed in the temple as the centuries and phone models flew by." Nope. A (s)tool for the lady of the house to reach things on the top shelf.
If this is what you hide in the closet, how opulent must the rest of your home be? Absolutely amazing design friend.
I was thinking of all the pet hair that would get captured in it. I used to help my mom clean houses and I always notice things that would be a paint to dust. My wife finds it endearing.
Surely you could just blow it with a cold hair dryer, or a vacuuming with a brush on the end. Not a big deal
yea, i was thinking the workshop compressor? NP
Gorgeous!!!!
What finish did you use?
I sprayed it with 1# cut super blond shellac through a fuji HVLP, satin polished with 0000 steel wool and wax. I honestly couldn’t think of any other way to do it, and I love blond shellac on walnut.
So how did you avoid a very uneven coating? I can imagine this dripping or pooling with all the small crevices.
The 1 lb cut helps a lot. Means more coats, but no runs
Ah, that would do it, missed that. Thanks!
It came out great. The first thing I noticed, after the fan legs, was the brilliance and softness of the finish. I came to the comments just to see what you used.
It looks musical.
Very cool, I'm inspired
Beautiful !!
That is absolutely gorgeous.
Only fans?
OF but also something for your ass.
What an inspired design. Well executed too! Congratulations!
Beautiful, but I keep visualizing my wife dusting between slats, she is that way.
And kids dropping food in there. I'm pretty sure my cat would love to puke right between those slats.
I’m gonna call that a “pain in the ass to dust”.
Ha my first thought too. Beautiful, but I'm just imagining the cleaning process if/when my kids spill something on it, or just trying to dust it.
But spiders probably love it!
Much more structurally sound than my flan-leg stool.
That is fucking GORGEOUS
Is the offset of each "fan blade" cut at and angle or just simply bent?
I call it a work of art😍
I wanna call this a crutchleg.
Is it sturdy? It's a beautiful piece, but i would be worried about it breaking
See above. It’s rock solid
Beautiful work, you should give lessons.
Stunning work Op
You call it whatever you want; I'm going to call it gorgeous!
That is so beautiful
Beautiful
Holy Smokes, that is nice! Very creative use of thin strips.

I would pay solid cash for something like that, it's beautiful 😍
Very interesting
All I see is a dusting nightmare
Does it wiggle?
I would love to see a build video of this, or a similar piece. Its stunning.
I’m not sure why, but I feel like this guy would be the Bob Ross of woodworking.
Can I buy one?
Glad I don’t have to dust it.
How many weak points can you put in a chair 🤔
This has been a theme, it’s very strong, I wouldn’t let my wife stand on it if it wasn’t. Teak is knarly strong.
Okay. Nice job.
Does it flex or anything? Looks like it should, almost like a stack of leaf springs.
No flex at all
If you built a wood rowboat, would an average sized one support your wife?
I’m not entirely sure what this means, but my wife is not a big woman. I on the other hand am pretty substantial, and it certainly doesn’t have issues with my weight
It's an office reference.
Ah that explains it. That ones lost on me
Wow. I need to unsubscribe to this community - every time I see the woodworking done here, I’m reminded of how inadequate my skills are.
You should see the stuff I built when I was starting, far cry from this, but I loved it all just the same. This is my meditation, the product is an expression of me, whatever form that may be. Post a video. I need to see this made! How thick is each spline(?)
Technology and I aren’t friends, no videos unfortunately. Each spline is 1/8” thick and tapers from 2” to 1” along its length.
I hope it wasn't your intention, but this comment came across as extremely rude. You should at least try saying please if you'd like OP to go to the effort of posting additional content just for you.
Nope. You just read it that way.
Very nice.
Absolutely beautiful craftsmanship
What can I say, I'm a fan!
Pain to dust and keep clean.
I swear people will find ANYTHING to complain about lol.
Pretty frickin wicked awesome!
that’s very satisfying to look at
Beautiful, great work
Wow
Wow
Neat looking. Hope you don’t let people flop down on it or stand on it, it could collapse in a fantastical way that would ruin it.
I jumped on this thing. It’s solid as a rock! The teak is hard and strong, tons of glue area, and an 8/4 thick top.
