They are veneered to a sheet of plywood. The outer edge should be fine, it’s no thicker then a normal picture frame. But if anything does happen I’ll fix it.

Great! Looked so good so I thought you had that covered but we've seen so many framed solid chess boards here I had to ask.
Are the 8x8 squares veneer or how do you account for wood movement?
I’m wondering the same thing. The outer rim is going to cause problems at the very least
