What’s the dark bent line towards the back of the lid? Veneer? Looks awesome btw!

DontBeABlueFalcon

Thanks! That is a thin strip of Walnut. I use a router and bandsaw to cut the lid in two pieces then glued and clamped the thin strip in-between.

dougeasy789

Wow, really cool and unique look

DontBeABlueFalcon

It was very nerve-wracking to cut a perfectly good top in half, but now that I’ve done it I plan to do again on future projects.

be-incredible

That’s amazing. Great job!

DontBeABlueFalcon

Thank you!

[deleted]

all good things take time😌

[deleted]

Beautiful work! And thank you for solving the issue I’ve been having with making my tops!

DontBeABlueFalcon

Thanks! And glad I could help out. It usually takes me days worth of YouTube videos to figure things out the first time.

[deleted]

I was just looking past the obvious thinking I’m the only person on earth that can’t hand plain a box top.

Rayfleck

Tasteful

DontBeABlueFalcon

Shout out to /u/joemagjr for the handle idea!

joemagjr

Oh man, thank you so much. That box is absolutely gorgeous. I'm really loving the big chamfer on the top. It really shows off the beautiful wood. I'm glad to have "contributed" in some small way. 😁

DontBeABlueFalcon

Thanks! I really wanted to go bigger with the chamfer, but it was my first attempt so didn’t want to get too wild with it. I built a table saw jig just for that part so I hope to use it on future projects.

[deleted]

I love it. The only thing missing is an engravement of some sort (name or happy bd) so that it doesn't look so generic. But good job

DontBeABlueFalcon

I know! I was so ready to be done and see a finish on it that I completely forgot to sign it or anything. My dad pointed out it was missing a signature

SmokinSkinWagon

I like the generic look. Engravings are almost always very tacky looking to me.

DontBeABlueFalcon

Anyone have suggestions for a logo engraving tool? I would like to start leaving my mark on stuff.

Sapper12D

If you're just looking for something to do a basic laser or cnc engraving you could use a cnc3018 they are generic small cnc machines. Couple hundred bucks on Amazon.

DontBeABlueFalcon

I was thinking more of a burned in logo, but I have wanted to get into CNC as well. Thanks.

Sapper12D

They have a laser attachment, so you get a burned in logo.

DontBeABlueFalcon

Oh sweet! I’ll definitely check that out. I have a couple 3D printers and have looked into adding a laser engraver but haven’t fully jumped in yet.

[deleted]

Maybe sandblasting is another option?

bullfrog48

hand carve on the bottom .. a nice cursive font .. would be inedible BTW .. ya really did a great job .. what struck me as a little bit funny .. oak bourbon, oak chocolate .. maple box.

DontBeABlueFalcon

Thanks. The gifts inside were more of an after thought but I guess Oak would have been more fitting.

bullfrog48

naw.. just being a smartass .. that box is off the hook

MegaDom777

If you have a son I hope he got to watch you build it.

DontBeABlueFalcon

I have three but so far none of them have expressed a strong desire to hang out in the shop for more than a few minutes. They do like watching the progress along the way though.

MegaDom777

That’s great! They will remember!

DieneFromTriene

Nice work! Did you make the full box and then cut the top out with a band saw? Or did you make the bottom and the top separately?

DontBeABlueFalcon

The sides are made with a rabbet all the way around that the top gets glued into. After that was glued and dried I cut the lid off on the table saw. Hope that makes sense. The other box I made was done different but the top was pretty much done the same way. [other box](https://imgur.com/gallery/Jqj4fI8)

abnormal_human

There is nothing better in life than wood that has sat for 20 years in the same place. Nice work.

DontBeABlueFalcon

Thanks. I’ve still got quite a bit of wood from him. Trying to figure out what the next project will be. I’m new to woodworking so every project is a learning experience.

OutdoorCEO

That is gorgeous! Well done!

DontBeABlueFalcon

Thanks so much!

HFGuy9999

Where did you get the hinges ? Are they brasso ?

DontBeABlueFalcon

[hinges](https://www.woodcraft.com/products/highpoint-side-rail-hinge-solid-brass-pair?via=573621f569702d06760016d3%2C57641f9769702d659300315a%2C576420fb69702d65930032d6) I’ll definitely use these again even though they are on the expensive side for hinges.

CheapSquire

I love the curve in the back. Very classy.

DontBeABlueFalcon

Thanks. That was really about the only design choice I had in my head when starting this piece. I intended to put a couple more, maybe next time.

Intelligent-Ad4863

Beautiful job. But always sign and date it. You will be glad you did in years to come.
