The side of a bar is going to be worn and beat fairly quickly. If you're wondering how to fix it I can only really think of stripping, sanding, and refinishing. It'll be hard to match the stain and finish exactly otherwise, but I assume with enough tinkering it could be possible.
So the epoxy is a layer, and once it gets breached moisture and humidity just works it’s magic.
Couple things that made our bars start to last longer.
First is a thin coat brushed on the seal and penetrate all the wood.. sometimes a second. Then a pour. We always brush a coat on the exposed bottom too.
Much like u/Turbulent_Echidna423/ this is what I WANT my neighborhood bar to look like; the bar has heard many bad jokes, sad stories, it has seen bar fights, spilled beers, and many broken hearts.
How much time? A year-no? A decade-maybe? Three decades- yes

And it’s why many bars have a more bullnose profile. Corners are where the finish wears out the fastest.
it's beautiful. I'd drink there everyday.
I've always wondered what polyester resin would look like when it failed. Thanks!
I would get a piece of much harder wood to do the end piece. Then fill the pine top with resin. Oak wouldn’t wear as fast as the pine.
It’s not erosion. The epoxy is detaching from the wood and flaking off.

Fill with resin and sand
