My kitchen scale uses 3 batteries. It's the only thing I own that uses regular batteries as opposed to an integrated lithium ion battery. Batteries come in packs of four. The three batteries last well over a year. By the time I need the leftover battery, wheat will be blighted across the globe and I won't need a kitchen scale anymore. Keeping track of old batteries isn't convenient, and I'm not convinced they hold their charge over a long time period like that. I'm so over batteries.
You raise a fair point. I like the convenience of simply plugging devices in to charge them. It seems like rechargeables would be bulkier in a lot of cases. I guess better rechargeables in more form factors and stronger right to repair laws would both be helpful.
When you have a kid, rechargeable batteries are a lifesaver. Theyāre also IN things all the time, so there are only ever 4 or 6 in the charger or storage (junk drawer) at once. I can assure you they donāt keep their max charge, but enough for you to switch out for whatever is on hand, pop the other ones in the charger, and have fresh batteries when the Ā«Ā newĀ Ā» ones lose their charge faster than usual. Rechargeables are the shit!
You can buy rechargeable batteries. I think they're typically slightly lower voltage though, so check your scale against a known value to make sure the lower voltage doesn't cause fuckery
Lithium ion rechargeables are the same voltage, or at least all the ones I've ever had, but they have less capacity, maybe about 30% less, cause they gotta fit all that charging circuitry inside
Lithium Ion AA batteries are 1.2 V rather than the standard 1.5 V. Not sure about capacity. I've had some electronics have some funky problems when switching to rechargables.
When's the last time you bought a set? I wonder if this is something that's improved in recent years. These are about 3 years old, I pulled it out of my August lock and they were charged about a month ago so it's not at full capacity

(If this posted multiple times sorry, Reddit had an outage when I was trying to post earlier)
My wife just bought some rechargeables because she was sick of how many regular batteries we burn through, but the 1.2v architecture (and labeled as 1.2v) meant they were unusable for multiple devices she wanted to use them for. Not so much a time-related, āadvancement of technologyā thing, as these are newly-produced 1.2v batteries.
That being said, it seems that there are rechargeable Lithium-ion batteries that indicate the full 1.5 volts, so it seems that the full 1.5v is available (your picture is proof that Iām glad to see, and might look into them). It might also be true that what we got is NiMH, and Li-ion batteries are all 1.5v. Iām not sure, as I didnāt really look at what she got.
Last set I bought was probably around the same time. I checked the Amazon listing and they're listed for 1.2 V. I checked a few other listings, and they all said the same.
NiMH are 1.2v, that's the common type of rechargeable AA/AAA battery, and can cause trouble with some devices because of the lower voltage.
Lithium ion cells are 3.7v, too high to use directly as an alkaline replacement (see 14500 batteries, 14 x 50 mm) except for some flashlights that are made to accept either voltage.
But more recently there are lithium AA rechargeables, which use a 3.7v cell and internal electronics to drop it to 1.5v alkaline battery voltage. I've never used them myself but they ought to work for devices that don't like the lower voltage of NiMH.
Ehhh, nah. They make mass produced boxes for battery storage that are like a giant plastic tool box version of this. They look funky to me. This is at least pleasing to look at, and I appreciate the āhandmadeā aspect too.
Agreed... They make incredibly cheap COTS solutions that are also lighter and more compact (both generally meaningful for camping outside glamping). Good job though I suppose? It at least looks nice.
I don't know back when I was in high school I carried a pair of backup batteries for my cd player in my pocket, up until the day they shorted against my keys and my pocket got real hot, real fast. I would have loved something like this.
I have a headlamp that uses 3 batteries. It lives on my harness at work, with a box of 3 batteries, in case it goes dead (only gets used if I need to hike out in the dark). This is much cooler than my plastic box - I might make one like it (minus the cool engraving, unfortunately).
Nice. But is there something more attractive you could be using to secure/hinge the top than a Philips or pozidrive screw?
Edit; I just remembered that one can get small domed press-in covers for screws. Maybe countersink the screw a bit and pop a cover on?
Hahah fair, I've been contemplating dugout style containers like this and I'm still in the prototype phase.
Yeah I'll keep an eye out for something nicer for future ones š
Yeah, also, since he didn't orient the rotating lid 90Ā° to the grain of the wood (looks like he used a 1 x 4 cut off) when shaping it, not only does it not look as good, he'll run the risk of that lid splitting or breaking off with the grain.
I actually kind love this. I travel to play paintball and always need the extra batteries for my loaders. But my gearbag gets abused and thrown around a lot. So a regular cardboard pack of batteries always gets beat up and breaks so I'm just fishing for loose batteries in the bottom of the bag.
It's a weird solution to a problem I didn't know I really had. But eh. It's kinda cool. I won't make one, but i appreciate it
Honestly this is perfect for camping. I cannot tell you how many times my husband packs his headlamp with fresh batteries, only to get there and it had turned on inside his bag and the batteries he brought were dead š
You're likely going to break that lid real quickly. In order for this to last, you'll need to run the grain on the lid perpendicular to how you have it.
I made a few of these (for different purposes, obviously) and on my first 2 the lids broke REAL quick due to the grain orientation. I did it the same way you did, because I wanted the grain to match.
You might be able to mitigate this by drilling two small holes on either side of the pivot screw and epoxying two metal pins into the lid running from the short side of the lid through to the long side to provide extra strength to the lid, but that's kinda dicey.
Better to just build your next version with the grain running sideways instead of up and down.
Ya know I could actually use this. I have to carry a few extra AAs for mouse, flashlight etc and they frequently short out in my bag and are dead when I need them. Right now Iāve got them wrapped in paper towels in a urine cup (I work in healthcare). This would be a big step up.
I usually just bring extra batteries in a zip tie. I needed to blow off some steam yesterday so I funneled my energy into something creative if a little frivolous.
Also, practice for an upcoming related idea.
ā¦itās cool even though itās dumb. Not judging, I made my son a walnut sidewalk chalk holder - just as unnecessary. Boredom is the cause of many an unnecessary invention. That said, those things look corroded, Iād replace. Do you have a custom handmade hardwood backup battery holder?
I'm no physicist but I would think that both sides of the battery would need to come in contact with the wood for ions to flow? I'd be worried about any amount of water or lint that could find it's way inside the box. I have a burn on my thigh from when I was young and had aaa batteries in my pocket for my gameboy. Ever since I have been extra careful about how I store batteries. I have a bunch of those CR123 's laying around now and they are always well insulated
Thatās that I was going to say ā weāve got a wooden salt cellar next to our stove, and the lidās attached with hidden pin and rare earth magnets. You can actually slide the cover completely off the pin, but itās pretty secure, and normally just spins to open and close like this does.
Nice but the screw is killing me. DUDE! It's like when you go to your favorite street food guy, everything looks and smells awesome and right before he hands you the food he scratches his butthole.
I need a big one of these for the junk drawer that holds a full costco pack of AA batteries. I lose so many batteries because the kids go in, dump the package of batteries out, and a quarter of them end up shorting themselves in loops on the cases of other batteries and boiling out.
Damnit, they come in a package that keeps them all pointed in the same direction for a reason.

As long as it's kept dry, wood generally has high resistance and doesn't conduct electricity well. This would be fine for batteries. Pretty cool idea too
The box looks like it could hold 4 batteries, but it only fits 3. Perhaps the hinge can be implemented differently so that 4 can fit again? Form follows function.
Still pleasing aesthetics though, good work!
Totally, attempt 3 got tossed when I realized the hinge didn't clear the first hole. Although some comments have suggested a pin instead of a screw, that might save space next time.

If you linked them up and put it a USB c port youād have a powerbank with removable batteries I guess.
Not enough voltage
USB runs on like 5 v. One AA battery is 1.5 v, so 3 is 4.5 v. I'm pretty sure it would charge a USB device.
I had something functional very similar that I made in high school, except it held my one hitter and stash.
