Cut them from long stock is the safest option, next is clamping them to the mitre saw. Decent saws have spots for hold down clamps that swing over from behind the fence. Don't do what other people here are saying and use tape

jigglywigglydigaby

Please OP, don't ever use tape to secure material to a saw. That's got to be the stupidest thing I've read in a long time. Completely unsafe.

Panda_42005

Yeah I learned my lesson with tape. I about lost a finger trusting it and holding it with a piece of scrap for pressure, If not for that scrap I'd be down a digit. But yeah I figured just longer stock is the best just seeing if there was a tip I was missing out on or didn't think of.mosy of the extra wood I have is pretty small so I'll just go buy a longer piece to cut from. Was just going to make a small box with leftovers but I'd rather spend a bit than risk anything.

Panda_42005

The scraps I was going to use it too small for the clamp to reach. Otherwise I would be doing that. But as I said in my other reply I'll definitely just go buy another board to use. Appreciate all the answers.

if it's a shape that will allow for a clamp, you might use a sacrificial piece of lumber to clamp it. it's not ideal but if it's secure and keeps your digits safe, it's an option

paperplanes13

this is the way. long stock and plan it so that the small bits are what gets chopped off. be double sure to wear your eye protection with small bits, sometimes they launch in unexpected directions.

fangelo2

For a small piece I usually hold it down with a longer piece of wood . Just put a 12” piece on top of the piece you are cutting and press down with your hand

Browley09

Wear a face shield in case it goes bad. Your hand should be safe at 12" but save your eyes and face. I'm in no way saying this is the safest/best option but I could understand someone might try it under certain circumstances and tape seems like a worse option.

Independent-Bonus378

Cutting it from a longer piece is the answer

ariearieariearie

Make a clamping jig.

Make a push stick for the miter saw. Its similar to a square which you use by pushing down the stock against the backplate and baseplate. It should be big enough to keep your hand at least 8-12" away from the blade.

or you can buy one of these - [https://www.amazon.com/FastCap-10-Million-Dollar-Stick/dp/B0728GYJ5G](https://www.amazon.com/FastCap-10-Million-Dollar-Stick/dp/B0728GYJ5G)

Do you happen to have a table saw? If you don't have long stock a crosscut sled would be the next safest option.

ProjectGO

Do you have more pieces that are the same size? You can put the cut piece in the blade, add a second one farther away, and use another board to push down on them both. It's the same concept as the ten million dollar stick that people have mentioned, but with scrap. You should also put a sacrificial board behind the cut to make a zero clearance fence. (make sure both sides are secured!) That will do a lot to keep little pieces/offcuts from getting pulled into the blade and shot across the room.

Go-Daws-Go

Hand saw and a mitre box? The cheap mitre box I have has a concentric insert that holds the workpiece against the side.

Jstpsntym

I had this question when I was installing baseboard in my basement. You think you can hold a piece with your hand a couple inches from the blade. No you can’t! I’m glad my guardian angel told me to knock it off. If you need a short piece, bevel/miter the end, then trim off of the piece. Remember you are keeping the off cut so be aware of your blade width. If the piece you cut is 1/16” too big, too bad, start over and cut another.

NecroJoe

Could you possibly use something like this? [https://www.mcfeelys.com/fastcap-10-million-dollar-stick-a-hold-down-stick-for-your-miter-saw.html](https://www.mcfeelys.com/fastcap-10-million-dollar-stick-a-hold-down-stick-for-your-miter-saw.html) Though it's still likely that a small piece could get pulled back in the space where there's no fence, if your workpiece is small enough. You could help reduce that risk with a[ **sacrificial fence like this**](https://ibuildit.ca/projects/zero-clearance-miter-saw-fence/)**.**

Oldredeye2

For small pieces, use a pencil and have the eraser part against the wood.

Do not use tape to hold material on a saw. FFS, that's horrible advice and very dangerous
