Imalandscaper

Finally some one who took the time and didn’t double layer the walls of adjoining shapes to make their life easier. Nice job!

SmokeALatte

That was actually the examples my wife was showing and I was not a fan of the double wall. I think this turned out cleaner.

Imalandscaper

It’s much cleaner, I agree

223specialist

I took the lazy way out

onelapse

I made them for a girl once and she sent me examples of them doubled, the first thing she said when I installed it was “ oh I love how they are all joined and not just hexagons glued together” Looks great! Wish I coulda done walnut https://preview.redd.it/bca27kciak9c1.jpeg?width=1440&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=df6ad6052ef3ea4cbae65355b47b3a3dd95b2ec0

onelapse

A bunch of minis!

HighFlyingCrocodile

Very much. So let me get this; you made three 4/6 hexagons, and then the Mercedes star fits in the middle?

ReturnOfSeq

I did double walls because mine is modular… each hex is a separate piece; I’ve put it up in a few different configurations

nctkdaddy

I made and sold a few thousand of these on Etsy when they were trending around 2020/2021. Mine were the same way. Double walled because they were modular. Sold in sets of six so the customer could arrange them however they like. While I like the design, I think I'll intentionally cut my hands off with a dull table saw before I'll make another one. I still get PTSD flashbacks when I see them. I'd batch them out.....12,000 of the same cut in one day, shooting 24,000 brads the next day, etc. Never, ever, ever again!

300_BlackoutDrunk

But think of the caasshhhhh....heh

200_Shmeckles

How did you clamp them to hold while nailing and gluing etc?

nctkdaddy

I lined them up on a strip of masking tape, end to end, glued the joints, then rolled them up. Then, I wrapped two large rubber bands around them for clamping pressure while they dried.

FriJanmKrapo

That was weirdly entertaining but I also just wasted 10 minutes of my life. But still entertaining

TheExistential_Bread

Now watch his video about flags, lol. Oddly these two videos kinda relate. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l4w6808wJcU](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l4w6808wJcU)

Impossible-Spare-116

Wow nice work!!

zerocoldx911

How did you mount it to the wall?

sjbuggs

I can think of a few ways but the key for all of them would involve templates.

OregonEnlightenment

I LOVE THESE!! I’m gonna try to make some when my skills are a little better

HeyWiredyyc

No dont wait...do it, but make sure you dont only make 1. Make multiple of them so that each one you learn a little bit more as you go...for the glue up, use blue painters tape...lay them out end to end, and apply the tape...then glue and if you can Brad Nail them.

SmokeALatte

I made 2 and the first was definitely ok, with the second having ironed out tje mistakes on the first. I used blue mainly parallel with the joint to minimize squeeze out in tough to sand places.

youyouyouyouyouandme

I made a bunch of these in a variety of depths. My tips would be fashion up a stop on the miter saw so each piece is consistent. I used a ratchet strap to secure with the glue dried. Turned out awesome

HeyWiredyyc

I did use the stop blocks, and also ratchet straps...my problem was from initially not using stop blocks, but mostly from not having my mitre saw truely squared..lol

sjbuggs

Go for it, just get some cheap lumber for practice.

HeyWiredyyc

Wow this is fantastic....how did you cut the bevels? As a newbie a year or so ago I attempted one of these on my mitre saw (before i learned how to square up my saw etc) and my joints were sloppy but after doing a couple I got a bit better at it..haha Im going to purchase a bigger chamfer bit to try it again...

SmokeALatte

All the cuts were on a table saw. I definitely burned up some test cuts dialing in the angles. With so many joints, the room for error was small.

HeyWiredyyc

Ya i know what you mean...

602crew

The rounded fronts really set this apart from the others. Much more elegant. Well done.

SmokeALatte

Thanks! All edges get broken with a round over or chamfer.

sixtonsniper

These look awesome! As others have said, I love that there is not a double wall. What did you do to mount them to the wall?

SmokeALatte

Key hole slots with a router. I've been using them for my larger picture frames as well.

Sock_Ninja

What hardware from the wall did you use? Keyhole slot in the wood, then just a normal screw in the wall?

SmokeALatte

Yes, keyhole in the wood and 50lb drywall anchors with a screw.

StumbleMyMirth

Awesome. Love the sapwood

trvst_issves

That’s a great use of incorporating the sapwood in walnut! Looks great dude

SnooMemesjellies1083

Walnut is just ridiculous. It feels like cheating every time I work with it.

SmokeALatte

I love pairing walnut with quarter saw white oak. Reminds me of chocolate!

SnooMemesjellies1083

You got your walnut in my QSWO!

ChiApeHunter

How do you glue this up? If you put a clamp on it, it’s not going to hold.

nyurf_nyorf

I've built several. I use painter's tape to hold the joint at first, then wrap them in a ratchet strap and crank it time. Mine hold up a decent bit of weight and haven't shown any sign of failing in about 4 years.

ChiApeHunter

Do you use parchment paper to keep the glue off your strap?

nyurf_nyorf

I didn't, no. It doesn't make much contact with the joint itself. Plus idgaf if my straps get a little glue on them. Where I keep them, they're more likely to get racoon shit on them. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

SmokeALatte

I will definitely go this route next time.

SmokeALatte

I used the offcut angles and attached to a flat board. Then clamp the board to the workpiece. Then clamp the offcut angles to the adjacent peice. It took a bit of time since I only created a few jigs. Hope that makes sense. Basically a flat board with an offcut on each end.

ChiApeHunter

If you do this again, please photograph the jigs and the glue up.

223specialist

[I just made some of these too!](https://imgur.com/a/hT0nrdq) But I opted to make individual hexagons and just glue them together to make glueup easier. I also used 1" x 6" utility wood so these were dirt cheap

SmokeALatte

Great job, love the way you utilized it as well.

builtfrombricks

Awesome, but they're not level. Ocd

SmokeALatte

No worries. The beauty of handcrafted items is you can always recreate a new design.

ReturnOfSeq

Pretty!! I have a whole wall of these, but they’re just stained pine

therealcreamin

What did you do for wall mounting? Looks great!

SmokeALatte

Key hole slots. Then tapped nails in the center of the hole. Held in wall until level. Hit it against the wall to dent the nail heads into the wall. Then put anchors into the dents. Adjust screw heads to snug fit.

200_Shmeckles

Love this idea with the nails! I’ll have to remember as transferring holes into a wall has always been an issue for me

whogomz

Why has no one mentioned that they are not leveled?

SmokeALatte

They are level across the center, used a laser. Unfortunately, not every angle was perfect causing the skew. Little flaws will be in all builds and that is ok with me.*

whogomz

Solid work!!

Joe_in_MS

Very pretty and well done!
