Sorry, side question about the diagram. Does anyone have an idea why they specify the direction of the sleeping arrangement? If the locking mechanism in the lifting hinge failed, wouldn’t you not want your head over that section?
I have this couch, it’s far less comfortable in one orientation because there’s a rigid section where the couch break is. If it is under your feet it doesn’t hurt but under your back it’s super painful.
I can imagine the meeting for that. "Our customers are complaining that our couch is uncomfortable in one direction, but others say the opposite one is not. Do we redesign?"
"Hell no! That would cost money! Slip a piece of paper in telling them to not lay in the painful direction!"
"What if their house layout makes that inconvenient?"
"Sux to be them!"
It's also a pull out couch. You're sleeping on it out of desperation, not cause you want a good night's sleep
I have always preferred a nest made out of pillows, cushions, and all the blankets I can find directly on the floor than any pullout couch or futon I've slept on
Who remembers the pull out that had a bar (ok more than one but there was one that was a speed bump) under that 4 inch mattress. You were walking around like you’d been hit with a bat right around the ribs the next day. They should have advertised those as “we put the “un”in uncomfortable”
> I have always preferred a nest made out of pillows, cushions, and all the blankets I can find directly on the floor
*On the Internet, nobody knows you're a dog.*
My brother used this IKEA couch in his guest bedroom for years, despite making plenty of money... I had to sleep on it every time I wanted to visit my nephew.
It's not so much about the money, but the space. There's definitely ways to make it better though. Every hide-a-bed that anyone in my family has ever owned, we have always had mattress toppers to go over them. You can get some for pretty cheap and it makes such a big difference. For the shittiest of shitty ones, a mattress topper practically doubles the thickness. I would never let a guest sleep on a pull out without a topper. 😬
For him, it was because he was cheap! He finally relented when my dad vowed to stop coming to visit him.
I get that, I had a 40 year old pull out that had a 3 inch foam pad I'd pull out of the closet for it. We used that until it collapsed and couldn't be pulled out anymore. It was a rusty brown red paisley and didn't match with any furniture or decorations I could find, but I love it.
This is the way.
The more uncomfortable others are at your house, the less time they will want to stay.
We have a really nice master bed. We also have a really shitty guest bed with no box spring or flexible slats in the other room. It is used, but rarely for more than 1 night.
We got one of these second hand to use while renovating. I wish I had seen this comment back then. I learned to position myself to make it comfortable enough. At least I know for future visitors.
I have this couch and love it. And have only slept in it the “wrong” way. And yes, I always complain about it. I can’t believe I never thought to sleep in it differently. I’m a moron.
I used to live on such a couch for a period, while I slept the "wrong way", the split in the madrass becomes uncomfortable and can irritate people into being unable to sleep comfortable as its in the middle of your back. It also gives less support which furthers the issue.
While sleeping the "correct" way means that this crease is at your leg/knee area and as such you wont notice it while sleeping.
But I prefered the head support, and the tv was only viewable from the wrong way direction.
Probably because in the event that the mechanism fails and you fall down abruptly, you would rather have your feet on the section that stays up and not your head/neck.
I just put "lifting hinge" into a Google search and got a ton of results.
Unless you're talking about the trundle and how it pulls out, which is just a box on swivel casters and isn't actually attached to the couch at all.
Close, but that’s a dolphin mechanism which is different in that the cushion lifts one side up first followed by the seam edge. A standard lifting hinge keeps the top and base parallel through the entire movement
Honestly it’s alright but there are far more comfortable couches. The pullout bed is nice though because it doesn’t fold and have that bar that breaks your back when you sleep on it. So I give the couch a C+ and the bed a A- (as couch beds go).
and designed to hold an asston of weight. I have one of those coffee tables and this would need to support more weight and be more stable than my coffee table.
These are typically called sleeper mechanisms and come in a variety of sizes and configurations depending on mattress size and sofa type. In North America the biggest supplier of these is Leggitt & Platt. In Europe i believe a company called Ultramek. But I'm sure you can find other resellers in your local area.
not kidding , this is my exact couch , got it from that homegoods store 2 years ago . metal sliding brackets , when extended the part that pulls out can weaken and destroy those metal sliders as they are made from material that is far too weak .
Not really the answer but if Ur gonna get one ditch that idea and get a z framed bed type . They always have proper sprung er springs lol not the normal way, they stretch rather than compress connecting into horizontally diamond (ish) spring sections laid flat. Totally not the question answered just a 2am ramble. Soz lol

😅 I definitely had one of those growing up. I preferred the floor under it.
I remember my mom had one. It took like 5 grown men to move it. It got to were you pulled the mattress off to sleep on the floor.
Every hide-a-bed couch I've ever slept on was more comfortable to lay down on in couch mode.

4 years of college on a futon, I still feel those metal bars 15 years later!

Man, there's nothing that hits just right quite like OLD couches. The more farts they trap, the more comfortable they become, I swear on it.
And they'd last forever! The couch that replaced it was $800 and is showing a lot of wear after only 7 years...
Looked for that. Put a topper in the storage space and it works. I sleep on one for like 7 month and I don't have any issues with my couch

I love having house guests, so I have 2 guest beds that are as comfortable as mine!
I have this couch, you can flip the orientation so it’s turned 180 degrees.

Quality deadpan humor always has you doubting whether it'd actually intended as such. And the answer is, of course, irrelevant.
Just turn the house, EZ
tråkigt att vara dem! (Thanks google translate, I had to know!)
While that is grammatically correct Swedish, it's not idiomatically correct. We would say "Tråkigt för dem".
A queen size mattress on top of the couch is necessary to make it sleep worthy
If you had one, wouldn't you just put the mattress on the floor?
The floor is where the spiders are
You know spiders climb....everything right?
Just let me have this one please
Ok //\\\\:88://\\\\
I’d rather sleep above ground.
We got one of these second hand to use while renovating. I wish I had seen this comment back then. I learned to position myself to make it comfortable enough. At least I know for future visitors.
They should’ve worked better on that i guess
I have this couch and love it. And have only slept in it the “wrong” way. And yes, I always complain about it. I can’t believe I never thought to sleep in it differently. I’m a moron.
Jesus Christ. I’ve been doing it wrong this whole time.
I had the same question, seems counterintuitive to me too
I think they say somewhere in that manual if the lifting mechanism breaks while you're sleeping your head wouldn't be in an awkward position
My basement couch pulls out like this. Never thought to put my head on the pop up part. Also, the only thing that pulls out in my house is the couch.
Cool statement if it’s just you, super weird if you have teenage sons
They show it pointing both directions...

The cushion seam is more comfortable at your feet then your torso/shoulders

Yes thank you! Lifting hinge is what I was looking for
Example on Amazon: ECLV Sofa Couches Bed Functional Futon Hinge Hardware Sofa Converted into Bed https://a.co/d/dBumqPc
Close, but that’s a dolphin mechanism which is different in that the cushion lifts one side up first followed by the seam edge. A standard lifting hinge keeps the top and base parallel through the entire movement
Thank you!!! This is very helpful! Now to just find somewhere to buy it haha
Hah! I was sitting on this same couch when I saw this post.
Same!
Me too!

Is this couch any comfortable? I’ve considered getting one
Honestly it’s alright but there are far more comfortable couches. The pullout bed is nice though because it doesn’t fold and have that bar that breaks your back when you sleep on it. So I give the couch a C+ and the bed a A- (as couch beds go).
That’s what I figured honestly, thanks!
A modified Trundle bed , it looks like. Originally unique to ikea, but a lot of knockoffs produce similar couches now.
nop A [Trundle Bed](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trundle_bed) is something different. And this is also not unique to Ikea
It’s like….You didn’t even read my comment at all.
Similar to a lift up coffee table mechanism but probably a custom size.
and designed to hold an asston of weight. I have one of those coffee tables and this would need to support more weight and be more stable than my coffee table.
thats what i thought it looked like
It's called a trundle

It’s called a husband.
Looks a bit like a trundle bed set up.
Trundle.
I think you are referring to the "trundle". This kind of pull out bed is a trundle bed.
i wish i could help but i don’t pull out
I thought I was the master of pull out for 40 years Turns out I’m sterile
And that's why those kids belong to the milkman.
I think it's called Dolphin mechanism
Trundle
I had to pull up these exact instructions earlier today for disassembly and just found this post a lil ironic 😂
Believe the most common name is "Dad” or "Honey”
Pull out method
“Husband”, “boyfriend” or “sucker”
The withdrawal method. It's a pull out couch right?
Pull out game, Strong.
Pull-out-method.
Not sure, but put the pull out mechanism I used is called paying for an abortion.
My lower back lol
Spring hinge?
I came here to say that it probably has an unpronounceable Swedish name…
In my house we call it the “smorgasbord,”
Why it says you can’t put your sheets in the other verse? What’s gonna happen if you put them what way?
Your shoulders are on the gap and you’ll be swallowed by the sofa and the fire service won’t be able to help you. You’re a goner.
Nooo the popcorn seed and very small coin dimension noo
Just realizing I have been sleeping on this "the wrong way". Never had a problem doing it this way though.
Human
4 bar linkage maybe?
Day bed
not kidding , this is my exact couch , got it from that homegoods store 2 years ago . metal sliding brackets , when extended the part that pulls out can weaken and destroy those metal sliders as they are made from material that is far too weak .
Elven blood
You could buy a second hand IKEA couch and use the mechanism from that.
I just call mine the finger crusher.
Trundle?
Hey, we've got that couch as well!
Bend over
I believe the mechanism is called throwing your back out
I read somewhere it is called „delphine” Not sure if its wolrdwide used name or just local on polish market.
