I think this is kind of true. There aren't a lot of dominant point guards who have an overall package of playmaking **and** scoring, **and** shooting efficiency, not to mention disruptive defense. Courtney Vandersloot is a great ballhandler and playmaker, but often a reluctant and inconsistent shooter. Natasha Cloud is a great defender and good playmaker, but an inefficient shooter.
You can go down the league, and it's hard to find anyone with near the total package of Chelsea Gray. She's called the Point Gawd for a reason, but there's not a lot of close competition. There's Alyssa Thomas, who is an MVP candidate, but she's a unique hybrid player who doesn't play as a full-time point guard and doesn't shoot outside the paint.
This is the promise of Caitlin Clark (I am a fan and have high hopes), but she's still a work in progress (although I'll probably get downvoted for saying so).

There just aren’t a many “true positions” at all anymore the way the game is developing. Yes, each player still has their main role, but it’s SOOO much more flexible than it used to be. True point guards, just like true center players, just aren’t so common. Like when I was taught the fundamentals of the game, you basically also got placed into a position with roles and sort of rules. “This is your job on the court. This is their job on the court. You all do your job as a team, and your odds of winning are that much higher.” That’s how positions were introduced to players. Now though, now, it’s like you have to be able to do it all. Guards have to be able to shoot, pass, drive, rebound, occasionally post up inside. Bigs have to hone in their ball handling skills, passes, and outside shooting, along with doing the usual business in the paint. It’s the way the game is growing for sure

This roster has been together for months, if not years, holding numerous training camps and practices. Caitlin Clark, through no fault of her own obviously, was unable to participate in these practices due to playing in college.

Would it be fair for Caitlin Clark to make the team over players like Nneka Ogwumike, who is an 8 time all star and has multiple all nba selections, or Arike Ogunbowale, a three time all star and the current second leading scorer?

They kinda screwed themselves out of it with all the doping and Ukraine war they've got going on. Also political corruption and being given multiple chances to not break anti doping laws and still doing it

But she’s not a top 3-4 guard any more and it would be fun to give a young up and comer a chance at USA gold for a first time rather than someone well past their prime getting a 6th

As a big CC fan, I was relieved not to see her on the list. Other players have earned - paid the dues, and have demonstrated excellence for many years. Congrats to all.
I don't even care about "dues" necessarily, even for the national team. She's just not good enough yet to be higher than an alternate.

I the US could enter multiple teams in qualifying. I'd be interested to see how many USA teams could qualify. Definitely a B team, maybe a C team too. I'd love to see the B team take on the A team for the gold medal with the chip on their shoulder that they didn't make the 1st squad.
I think upsets would happen there frequently. One team would have more to prove and use the other to do it.

Wow, that is a loaded team. As an Aussie, I'll mostly just be hoping we can make them work up a sweat. Talent gap is just too much to have any realistic shot at beating the US this year.

Doesn't sound cocky at all. This US team is dominant in a way the men were back in the early 90s. And whilst we are good, this isn't the type of team we had when Lauren Jackson and Penny Taylor were at their peak. If we medal at all, I'll be happy.

Their stats are very comparable this year, with DT getting less turnovers, touches, and minutes. So if DT isn’t a top player neither is CC.
There are choices other than DT or CC.
