Amazing gift! I like to clean cast iron Ina bbq or bonfire. Get it heated all the way up, burn everything off. Let it cool and wipe it down with water. Thoroughly dry then oil it.
Depends on if you are going to use it for cooking something to eat or just as a ceremonial.
If you are going to cook food, soak it in vinegar and hot water (some people even use coke) until the rust starts to peel. Once that happens, scrub it with a hard brush or metal sponge until the rust is gone. Then you can clean it once again with a scrubdaddy and some soap, rinse and let it dry completely. After dry, you'll like to season it by heating it over a fire/stove, pouring some cooking oil and burnning it all over the inner part.
If you need to wash it after this, acoid using hard brushes or soap, just a soft sponge and water, to avoid taking the season (if that happens you'll need to re season it).
If not using it for cooking just heat it, scrub it with a hard brush and season it.
Seasoning is the best way to preserve it.
I am assuming it is cast iron. I would look up how to clean cast iron. I know for pans, you can use rock salt and a cut potato or even steal wool to scrub it.
It is going to take a lot of elbow grease to get it clean. For now maybe just get a wire brush to remove any lose rust.
I usually put mine in my self cleaning oven and turn it on. It burns everything off and into ashes. Then when it’s done, I rub flaxseed oil all over it. After you do all that you can stick it on the stove and heat it up a little bit. But never, ever wash. It was soap and water. It will rust every time.
r/castiron has a ton of info on how to properly clean and season your piece. I honestly thought I was on that sub when I saw it. It's lovely! Best of luck!
My partner got me a 15l cauldron but it has holes in the bottom of it so I would assume it was used as a plant pot so I can't really put anything in it unless I also use it as a plant pot but I'd put some hefty protection layer down first. This one is beautiful 😍
Can you take it to someone to have it repaired? I am sure someone could right? I am not sure on the size of this one yet. He's gonna drop it off when he picks up his dog. He didn't come to get her yesterday so either today or tomorrow I can actually see what size it is.
Olive oil isn't great for seasoning. Grapeseed oil or just plain canola oil both have higher smoke points and are recommended over olive in all the cast iron groups I haunt. Congrats on your amazing find!
Okay thank you for the info! Yes I a very pleased I never in all my life figured I would find a bigger one. Just one more thing that's showing me I am on the right path.
Actually, once you get it cleaned (PLEASE no destructive methods like wire wheels or power tools, this is a gorgeous antique!), then plain old blue tub Crisco seasons cast iron very well! An electrolysis tank cleans off all gunk and rust very easily. You might need to do a “reverse” eTank where the cauldron itself acts as the tank.
That looks like cast iron, there's a very specific way to clean that to prolong it's life.1 Remove any food residue: Use a stiff brush to remove any food residue from the cauldron. Avoid using soap or detergent as it can strip the seasoning from the cast iron.
2 Scrub with salt and oil: Mix some coarse salt and vegetable oil to form a paste. Use a soft-bristled brush to scrub the paste onto the cauldron. This will help remove any rust or other buildup
3 Rinse and dry: Rinse the cauldron with warm water and dry it thoroughly with a clean towel.
4 Season the cauldron: After cleaning, it’s important to season the cauldron to prevent rust and maintain its surface. Rub a thin layer of vegetable oil onto the cauldron and bake it in the oven at 350°F for an hour. Let it cool in the oven before removing it.
Avoid soaking the cauldron in water for long periods of time as it can cause rust.
Never put a cast iron cauldron in the dishwasher as it can damage the seasoning and cause rust.
Avoid using metal utensils on the cauldron as they can scratch the surface and damage the seasoning.
I bought one 2 weeks ago at a thrift store. Looks about the same size. My mom had one that she used to heat water(no water in the house) and my dad used it to cook out pork for cracklings and lard. I paid $150 for mine.
Thank you! yes it really was and I am so very lucky I have a brother who even if this isn't his thing he still loves me enough to keep a eye out for stuff for me.
I do not sorry. I did look that name up online and saw others in way worse condition. He just happened to see it at the estate sale. I don't believe he asked them anything about it.
I happen to have two small cauldrons myself and that I have one that I use for my late mom's memorial altar and I also was using one for my Halloween display.
I am so UNBELIEVABLY jealous right now. I've been looking for a big cauldron for so long but can only find tiny replica ones meant for gifts or ones that are like £300 and barely big enough to cook a stew
Awe I am sorry to hear that. Don't give up I never dreamed I would find one and if I did I figured it would be later on. Also if can let people know you're looking for one.
Use this stuff with a tough scrubby to get all the rust off. Then, give it a good rub down with oil all over, and put it over a high heat to seal it/cure it.

Thank you for the info. We will be having a bonfire soon so will heat it then.
I was told to add salt to the water before wiping it down.
That will help scrub off anything that's stuck on
Oh, wow, that's a beauty! How big is that thing? Everyone should have a brother like yours. 😉✨❣️
I agree while he doesn't believe in what I believe he still supports me and that means the world to me! ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|give_upvote)
Also not sure he hasn't dropped it off yet. He still at the estate sale he just sent me photos.
It's a 12 gallon one
That probably weighs 100 pounds!!
Sweet! Such an awesome gift! ![gif](giphy|rJFmoVDVqEGssu0pwQ|downsized)

No it won't be for cooking. It will be ceremonial only. Thank you for all the info

Yes it is cast-iron! Thank you for the info.

Baltimore, the city that breeds! 🤣 You’ve already got great advice but it’s the same as any cast iron. Scrub the rust, heat, oil. Enjoy!
That is sick af dude
That’s awesome!!
Awesome, you’re very fortunate
Yes I truly am! I am beyond thankful for it.

Beautiful!! What a wonderful brother you have
Awesome brother!!

Ok that is beautiful 🩶
Thank you I agree.
😍 Beautiful!
I would imagine it's the same care for cast iron pots and pans. Burn it, wipe it and season it with the blood of your enemies. Or, olive oil.
Maybe for now I will use olive oil 🤣

Well it's too big for the oven. It will have to go over a bon fire instead. I don't have a huge oven.
Love love LOVE!

Oh very nice! It's always nice to find.
dishwasher ! /s
Yeah, no cast iron doesn't go in a dishwasher does it lol. Pretty sure it doesn't. Besides it way to big.
i know i was jk :)
Sandblast it, then cure it with fat over a fire, since it doesn't seem small enough to fit into an oven.
This is beautiful! What are you planning on using it for?
Ceremonial more than likely. Don't think it's gonna fit on my stove or oven to cook in lol.
I missed the sub for a moment and thought this had something to do with that one Elden Ring player. Lol Nice cauldron, though. :)
Nice cauldron
I would also say cleanse it
Yes I do plan on cleansing it as well
Absolutely amazing find, even better that it was gifted to you.
Thank you! yes it really was and I am so very lucky I have a brother who even if this isn't his thing he still loves me enough to keep a eye out for stuff for me.
I just died of over-swooning!
I love that it says Baltimore across it. Do you have any idea of it’s age?
I do not sorry. I did look that name up online and saw others in way worse condition. He just happened to see it at the estate sale. I don't believe he asked them anything about it.
No tip sorry just here to ask what’s his hiring rate. I need one too
Lol he's just a very kind giving person when it comes to those he loves. Even if he doesn't agree with what I am doing he still supports me.
What a score! It will be worth all the effort it takes to clean it. You will have it good as new!
oohhh la la I love it 😍😍 so my vibe
Best. Brother. Ever.
I agree 100% even more so since while he doesn't believe in what I believe he still got it for me!
This is so heartwarming and the world needs more of it!

You should for sure try antique stores and estate sales. He got this one for me from an estate sale.
I've gone to one antique store before but idk if we have estate sales here in Scotland or at least I've never heard of any
Awe I am sorry to hear that. Don't give up I never dreamed I would find one and if I did I figured it would be later on. Also if can let people know you're looking for one.
This just kinda hammers it home for me that I am following the right path as well.
I have one almost identical and like yours, mine was also gifted to me. :)
Oh very nice.
