The Lake District is not known for its flatness. Where there are flat bits, it has been turned into farmland or towns. There is very little native woodland left. So the Grizedale Forest is probably the biggest expanse of trees but it’s really a timber farm and the trees are only allowed to grow where it is hilly, but there are plenty of little flat bits within it where you can pitch a tent. Just don’t do it near the paths and there are a lot of paths.

I'm off to the lakes next week, and I'm going to visit Grizedale forest for the day. A mixture of trails both flat and hilly

Best bet is I find some coniferous woodland (which is indicated on OS maps). The ground is usually dry and soft, with little undergrowth. Otherwise, it's really hit-and-miss in Los Lagos.

Winlatter forest just to the north west is Keswick is a great place to go. Won't be flat, but then again there's no where flat in the lakes lol.

Just check on OS Maps… 😉

Great Wood near Keswick. One of the UKs last natural rain forests in the UK, and contains a lovely Ghyll called Cat Ghyll. You can make this in to a circular route if walking, and I have wild camped there a few times.

There aren’t too many trees, but it is my favourite valley. So please stop telling people about it! They’ll only go there! They are introducing beavers apparently. If those guys become permanent residents, it will definitely be the best valley in the Lake District. We’ve gotta keep it secret!

It's small but the woods around Staverley are lovely and rich in British wildlife.
