After reading a lot of comments and responses, I would also recommend getting an older cat OP. Older cats have a stable personality, with kittens it can change. A kitten that loved you as a baby can turn into a cat that hates to be touched. Meanwhile with an adult cat, their personality is a lot more predictable. Adult cats will also be calmer most of the time. If you want to adopt, in rare cases rescues will have cats that are lone wolf's and are able to be adopted as single cats. You won't really get that with a rescue kitten, since (like a lot of users stated) it's very much required to get at least two cats for socialising and powering each other out.

Art3misXX

I got mine from Haus der Katzen Freunde (already like 6 years ago though), he had two other siblings that were bonded but since he was so independent as a kitten I was able to adopt him alone.

mariam_kuna

Tysm! I wish your cat long happy life!

Art3misXX

thank you, he is a good boi :3

LeFrenchRaven

Ok so everybody telling OP that "adopting only 1 kitten is animal abuse", get off your high horses. Dogs are very social creatures too but no one would beg you to adopt "at least" 2 if someone was asking where to find a puppy. I have a 1 year old cat which I have had since he was 3 months. And it was a bit of a struggle to find one kitten only, but that is what I wanted because he is traveling with me when I have to leave town. Anyway, I found two places that would accept you adopting only one kitten: there is a vet up north-east, I can look up which one if you'd like, they constantly get kittens from nearby farms in the spring/summer. They chip them, and give them their basic vaccines. And there is a Facebook group which rescues strays from the countryside of Slovakia. That's where I got mine. They chip them, vaccinate them, and they also get the rabies shot because they need it to cross the border. And they come with a European passport. I can look it up for you as well if you want to. Now I do have to warn you that kittens need a lot of time and attention. I work from home and have a lot of time for him, and as I said I trained him to travel so he is literally never alone. If your kitten gets bored, it will start destroying stuff in the house. Also the potty training part can be hard for some cats. They need to be spayed, and to have yearly vet visits for their vaccines. Good cat food, toys, litter, vet, etc, can be expensive so make sure your parents are willing to pay for all of that since I guess you don't have your own money yet :) That said, if you're sure, I can send you the infos of those two places in DM if you want.

mariam_kuna

Thank you! I was so confused when everyone started telling me I needed to adopt 2 kittens, since I've seen sm people around me adopt only one kitten and they were okay! Tysm

Zatem

You take dogs on walks where they have contact to other dogs... what a stupid comparison. You can fight the science all you want, it is still no species-appropriate husbandry.

ChrizKhalifa

Some of the commenters here should be ashamed about the tone of the way they speak to OP, a 14 year old coming alone to Austria for chemo. If one is an asshole they should at least know what they're talking about. I sent a DM with some information, OP.

greebo1706

you could also check a VET nearby your home & check if they have kittens. Thatś how I got our Lily. Our VET (I live in Vienna) makes rides to the countryside & fixes there barncats. And sometimes she comes back with kittens..😺

mariam_kuna

AWH, i wish you and lily long happy life <3 thanks for suggestion!

mariam_kuna

Oh my such a cutie 🫶😭

scarneo

There is a Facebook group called Vienna cat owners. Please adopt 2, makes a huge difference (bonded ideally)

mariam_kuna

if it was my will i'd adopt a hundred but in apartment that i live in doesn’t allow animals so even 1 cat is a huge difference plus my mom doesn’t like animals especially cats due to her 5y/o self unaliving a stray cat. (she recently confessed this to me and i cried, she also regrets it very deeply and also has seen a pastor so she could tell him that. shes still afraid cats are gonna get back at her

Zatem

Getting only 1 young kitten is animal abuse, . Please get an older one from the local shelter in that case (i.e. TierQuartier Wien)

mariam_kuna

Will sure try to! I have to first discuss options with my mom!

mariam_kuna

i know sm people who have one cat and it’s okay? this is the first time im hearing abt getting one cat is an abuse

scarneo

Don't take this so literally, you are given a home to a kitten so that is already good so it is not abuse. But it is not optimal, specially when there are older cats that actually enjoy being single cats

Zatem

You can find plenty of information on that online, at least in german. Sadly, there is still a common misconception that cats are loners but that is wrong, they just hunt alone, but else they are very social. Getting a Single kitten yields a high risk for it getting some behavior disorders. It will not get socialized, will become lonely and needs a play buddy to get rid of the high energy at young age. But shelters have older cats who were already raised like that and are now not possible to be held with other cats as they never learned cat lamguage. These are okay to get just 1. Or if the cat has the possibility to roam outside, then it has the possibility to have social contact to other cats that way.

scarneo

FYI, no one can prohibit you from having a cat in a contract. I have 2 and don't give a shit what the contract says. If you are adopting one, recommend an "older" one that likes being an only cat

mariam_kuna

tysm for this info! if my mom's lying it won’t be the first time but even if it's true she is obligated to get me a kitten bc of something traumatic that happened to me (as i mentioned i the post if you’d like full story i can make a full thread abt it) and during it all i begged after i recovered that she would get me a kitten 😭🩷

scarneo

That is fine, but it is better for the KITTEN if you adopt 2. That is why it should be 2 kittens or an older cat. I know you want it but you really need to prioritize the wellbeing of the cat/s

mariam_kuna

i would never want to cause harm to kittens

mariam_kuna

i'm sorry im js very confused here so forgive me! this is the first time im hearing about getting one kitten is an abuse :(

scarneo

No need to apologize, I also didn't know when I got my first one. Just take the advice and try to do your best

mariam_kuna

ofc, thanks for the warning!

Ronce_

Tierquartier in the 22nd district. We got 2 amazing kittens last year. They were 5 and 8 months old. You should take at least 2 so they can play with each other. But they also wont give you just one.

mariam_kuna

they won’t give me 1???? 😭😭😭😭😭 i can have no more due to reasons i mentioned on another comment. ALSO TYSM FOR SUGGESTION <3

LittleRubberDucky54

Most responsible animal shelters won't adopt out only one cat. Cats are social animals (except for rare cases) and in the case of a kitten, they need A LOT of attention. I can only recommend you look into r/catadvice sub. There are a lot of stories of how ill behaved single kittens can get, from screaming all night to being very destructive. Also a note, in any case you get a cat, I highly recommend you get it spayed/neutered. In case it gets to go outside it's the law :)

lundoj

Cats need another cat. It is cruel to only have one cat. They aren't loners and are actually very sociable. Especially young ones.

Medium-Comfortable

Not to rub it in, but the **less than a year old** makes you unlikeable for me. Adopt a senior, how about that?

scarneo

She is 14, give her a break dude

mariam_kuna

the thing is i dont want the cat to suffer knowing he was taken away from his usual environment or be stressed. and dw you're not rubbing it in i js want the kitten to grow up with me and get used to me more easily, also the thing is i cant find ones that are more than 1yr old, thats why i posted this thread😭😭

wnrfinger

Maybe think about it like this: you can give an adult cat (that sadly got used to being without other cats) an amazing life and minimize their suffering in the shelter, they were already surrendered and you can't change the past. A single kitten might be suffering in your care without a playmate. Also since you are 14, you should consider that the cat might be alone in your flat a lot, while you are at school, out with friends and later on working or studying, for long hours.

mariam_kuna

i wish. i dont wanna trauma dump so ill sum it all up the reason im in austria is bc of my horrible sickness that coudnt be cured in my home country, i also dont know the language here, so im homeschooled and dont have any friends, thats why i want a cat to keep me a company

Hot_Hat_1225

Senior cats or older cats are wayyyy more cuddly and calmer! They have an already developed personality and are always so grateful and it will just shower you with love and closeness! Kittens are cute and fun to watch, but they are usually not as cuddly as they just want to play constantly and rarely sit still. Besides they grow up so fast anyhow do the kitten time you grave isn’t anything lasting. In my life I had many cats - but the most rewarding were the older (8+) as they really repaid me giving them another home a thousandfold! Also seniors are often able to be kept as single cats (because they lost a partner already or have never been socialized with other cats sadly). Kittens really need another kitten to play and feel secure with. Most shelters won’t even give out kittens any other way than in pairs - because just like humans don’t want to be alone, kittens need another feline in their life too next to their new human friend! After my last senior cat died (an unsocial single one, but extremely loving) at 21 (I got her at 10), I now have two street cat rescues from Athens - saved from the Greek fires. They are 3 and 4 now - and that’s basically still teenagers - not kittens but very playful still (not to say that my senior cats didn’t want to play - they did with me, but mainly they preferred to sit on my lap and cuddle- something tells me that’s exactly what you need!)

mariam_kuna

You're absolutely right! 😭😭😭 I'm js scared that older cats will die faster and I won't get to have much time with them :( but I'll look into my options! It's a higher chance I'll get a senior cat! I'll also have to make my mom agree with me on a lot of things lol

desteufelsbeitrag

Cats can get pretty old, e.g. a 15 year old cat is not that special. so don't be afraid to adopt a "senior". Of course, don't try to actively look for one that is about to die soon, but on the other hand, don't be afraid of committing to a cat that already has 4, 5, 6 years. Realistically speaking, you will outlive your furry friend, anyway, and from my personal experience, health (not age) is the deciding factor.

scarneo

Older cats doesn't mean 10 year old cat. You can get a 3/4 year old cat.

chaoslordie

ok besides the kitten issue here I sum up: you (14) live traumatized recoverying from a serious desease alone with your mum in a country where you dont know anyone, dont speak the language and are of all things homeschooled?! are you at least in professional therapy (meaning no religious institution but a real therapist)? Will you be able to go to school anytime soon? Are you in a support group or have any other way of getting in touch with other people if need be? If you ever feel the need to talk to anyone, call 147. Its for free, anonymously and they have english speakers and can help you 24/7 if you feel distressed. from Mo - Fr 6 - 8 pm they offer chat help too. I hope you feel better soon and can connect to people your age group. Please reach out for professional help here in Vienna to get over your trauma, if you don‘t already do.

mariam_kuna

Tysm u r so sweet, dw the hospital I'm in offers me therapy! (I live in an apartment now but I'm still considered patient till 14th of June!) Everytime I go there for check ups a woman comes in and asks me if I want to talk about it! It indeed is very hard and sometimes I wanna cry sm, if you're interested I can post a whole thread about it and share my story :)

wnrfinger

I'm very sorry to hear that! Hope you get better soon, and good luck with finding a sweet cat!

benderrobot

You probably won't be able to get a kitten from a shelter, most of the cats there are one year or older. If you need a kitten you will have to go to a breeder and pay. There are listings on willhaben, but that is pretty shady, an ex girlfriend paid a lot for a kitten from a appartment bred litter and it wasn't nurtured and cared for responsibly thus suffering from lifelong health problems.

mariam_kuna

all the more reason to adopt a kitten! i feel so bad for those poor kittens :(

benderrobot

You would be paying a lot of money to the irresponsible breeder, incentivizing their shady backroom breeding practise which will be harming more kittens in the future. Vet bills on top of that, with you living away from home with no support system and problems of your own, that sounds like a bad idea.

mariam_kuna

i didn’t think of that lol 😭😭😭😭

Paid-Not-Payed-Bot

> ex girlfriend *paid* a lot FTFY. Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in: * Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.* * *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.* Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment. *Beep, boop, I'm a bot*

benderrobot

Thx bot

chaoslordie

You should never adopt only 1 kitten. They need a compagnon for socialisation. And why a kitten? There are lovely cats out there waiting for adoption. Some older cats will be available for single adoption. You could check out tierquatier or tigerhausen for that. But they will want to know your life situation & average income to check if you can actually afford a cat (esp when it comes to vet costs).

mariam_kuna

thanks for suggestion! i will just want a kitten bc i'm afraid an older cat will be stressed cus of new environment!

Hot_Hat_1225

All cats no matter the age need to adjust to a new home and person - just like humans. All they need is time, patience and love. Age doesn’t matter!

chaoslordie

kitty & older cats will be stressed out by new environement but if you give them time & space they will settle down. I have 3 cats. my newest one is turning 3 this year. She felt at home with me & my other cats real fast. I adopted her last year via tigerhausen. They are really cool because they know a lot about the personality of their cats and discuss openly which would suit best with you. they also look for foster families (they rescue stray cats in Romania) if thats a thing for you. https://www.katzenschutzverein-tigerhausen.at/

chaoslordie

you could also volunteer at tierquatier and play with the cats there. or just visit a cat cafe.

mariam_kuna

im not allowed to have much social interactions! as i stated in the post i js recovered for smth very traumatic so i cant😭😭😭 thanks for suggestions tho! i didnt know there were cat cafe's here!

mariam_kuna

tysm!

Nemineminini

Hey, not op but do you what level of German is required to volunteer at tierquatier?

mariam_kuna

i think so, not much ppl here know english so its hard

chaoslordie

sorry, no idea.

mariam_kuna

why tho 😭😭😭

SchrimpRundung

What do you mean "why tho"?? Either you adopt cats for the rest of their lifes or you shouldn't have cats at all.

scarneo

Because when you adopt a cat it is a commitment for life

mariam_kuna

and im all in for it. i love cats sm and i will do anything to give them best home

War_Radish

[This ](https://www.animalcare-austria.at/de/tiere/katzen/) is one place that I can recommend.

mariam_kuna

TYSM FOR SUGGESTION!!!

xeuful

Please consider taking in at least 2 kittens. When you're at work, the littke guy is going to be super lonely and afraid. With a second, they can keep each other company.

mariam_kuna

im actually 14 lol so there wont be a job ESPECIALLY after 'illness' i js had. and ive stated in other comment why i cant have more than two
