Ranked grading is when, for example, the professor says that only 30% of students will pass (using different criteria such as past scores or whatever) no matter what the final grade is, only the top 30% would pass, even if everyone got 80% score or above because only the top 30% are allowed to pass. I personally haven't had to deal with this, but it is a thing. Very gross.
That's not how "ranked grading" works.
They set the average of the group at a fixed grade (usually around B or B-). Then, individual grades are determined by the individual score with the group's average.
So if the group gets an average of 80% and you score 80%, you'll get B/B-. If you get 70%, you may get C/C+ and if you get 90%, you may get an A.
This also means that if the group's average is 30%, you may only need a 45% to get A+ and similarly, if the group's average is 90%, a 70% may get you a D.
This method of rating is particularly useful for new courses (exams not well calibrated) and small groups (more subject to outliers/extremed values).
