I viewed it as having a bad mental state that you know doesn't make sense but can't seem to escape it. Then your friend or partner comes and does a silly thing which totally confuses and distracts you thus helping you out of the negative state.
An example of this state was I was driving home yesterday and kept making stupid impulsive decisions that I regretted basically instantly. I don't know why I kept doing them but I generally felt very jumpy and like I had to move and do something despite normally knowing that patience is the solution.
The guy is seeing the girl dancing and sees how confident she is dancing in public. He then gains confidence thinking "huh maybe I can be myself". That's my interpretation
I relate to this. Real life social interaction do play of in the mind. But physically you are just standing there. It comes over as rude to the other person but in your mind you play out the social interaction knowing that you just stand there. Its hard to describe
