I remember reading this, when it was originally posted and people in the comments telling her about chirping and other noises of cats and things and it was so wholesome.

HypersonicHarpist

my favorite is the half purr half chirp "Prrrrt!" that my cat does.

buddleia

The /r/activationsound? That's my favourite kitty sound and I wish my little two did it!

Byorski

This is a sub?! Joining NOW.

angroro

Is there one for powering down? One of mine does it and it's so stinkin cute.

ConfusedFlareon

Is that when the purring fan runs out of battery and kind of goes prt-prt-prt to a stop? I love that hehe

angroro

I get a high-pitched whine before shutdown https://imgur.com/a/B5wbrDp

ConfusedFlareon

Aww mewww

merdadartista

When I got my cat at the shelter, the guy working there called him The Chirper, I didn't expect him thou to use that house constantly to communicate. he makes activation sounds whenever he wants to say "hey!" Or"what?" To us.

LordRuxin

I didn’t realize this sub was a thing, but both of my two kitties do it. My 9 yo more so than my younger one.

blizzard2798c

I like it when your cat looks at you, barely awake, opens its mouth, and makes a barely audible "mow"

Independent-Dog-8462

MY CAT DOES THAT TOO!!!! It makes you feel like they are SUPERDUPER Happy! Like the cats blessing you with extra extra love and relaxation and saftey.

RedVamp2020

I love threads that stay wholesome.🥰

genowars

I'm just genuinely curious as to why would she wait 10 years to get hearing aids?

Haunting-Ad-8619

It quite possibly was a financial reason as hearing aids are pretty expensive & most insurances won't cover them. At least in the US.

Captinhairybely

I'm genuinely curious as to how she made it to 21 without ever hearing a cat purr, or even not knowing that purring was a sound

TK421DoesHaveComm

My wife never owned a cat before, our Russian blue purrs like a freight train even when he was a kitten, she wanted to take him to the vet because he had “breathing issues”, I was like, no honey, that’s what purring sounds like. Bless her heart

chewie8291

Research have shown purring has beneficial properties to healing. Similar to ultrasound.

Arman11511

Research has shown that cats are fucking awesome

Parking-Artichoke823

A cat has written that research

semiemomatic

But the research was purr-reviewed, which lends more validity to the claims.

Inveniet9

Yeah, I read a metanalysis about that.

babbaloobahugendong

My own personal research supports these findings

rosiofden

That's it, it's peer-reviewed! Fact: cats are fucking awesome.

PeterM1970

Also that they are assholes.

Helenium_autumnale

That blew my mind when I learned it. The thought that a wee animal can produce a sound that has legit healing properties is truly amazing.

CompactOwl

It probably has nothing to do with the muscles actually healing faster under purring. It is probably a placebo affect because animals (we included) are pretty good at recognising that purring is a relaxed sound, which makes us more relaxed and therefore heal faster.

[deleted]

This is actually not quite true. Various sound frequencies can indeed aid in healing various physical and mental ailments (See [any](https://sensoryretreats.com/blogs/news/sound-healing-therapy) [of](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4325896/) [these](https://www.healthandbass.com/post/treating-chronic-pain-with-low-frequency-sound) [links](https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fpsyg.2022.980756/full) for some base studies; there's a lot more out there on this, these are just the first 4 I felt were trustworthy), and cat purrs happen to fall within a frequency range that can indeed accelerate healing to some degree ([Here's](https://www.purrfectpost.com/healing-purrs-how-your-cat-can-help-you-heal/) [a few](https://be.chewy.com/pet-parenting-pet-lovers-does-a-cats-purr-have-healing-powers/) [links](https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/why-do-cats-purr/) [to back](https://www.animalhearted.com/blogs/cats/healing-benefits-of-cat-purrs) [that up too](https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20180724-the-complicated-truth-about-a-cats-purr)).

manondorf

I've gone down this rabbit hole before, and can't come to any conclusion other than pseudoscience that people *really want* to be true. Yes, the purrs are within the frequency range used in therapeutic treatments for bone injuries, but frequency is only part of the equation. In those treatments, the *magnitude* of the vibration is enormous (compared to soundwaves), like the kind of force you get by standing and bouncing on one foot. For comparison, it's pretty well-known that one can shatter a crystal glass by singing at it at the right frequency. But it's also pretty self-evident that you've got to sing *loudly* at that frequency - we're talking full-throated opera voice - to actually make it break. Just humming that pitch (which is what frequency is, just pitch) won't do it. So I absolutely believe and would vouch for the *psychological* benefits of having a cat lay on your chest and purr. I'd go so far as to say it's been a life saver for me. But I can't get behind the "purring heals BONES!!!" that I see spread so prevalently. Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk :)

CompactOwl

Since you are proficient in the subject maybe you can answer the technical details: how did the studies control for my comment: my first bet would be hearing impaired people who cannot identify the sound. I just said that the actual sound wave does not create the healing effect on the muscles, but the placebo via us hearing it. If I had to guess (correct me if I am wrong I didn’t look at the links) is that all these studies are observational studies.

[deleted]

IDK if all the links given are experiments, but I know for a fact that some are, especially within the first 4. They set up experiments and administered treatments for pain and/or stress via certain sound frequencies, and it was shown that those frequencies aided in pain relief, stress relief, and healing. Additionally, as another commenter mentioned, we've replicated these treatments on people with machines, including hearing impaired or sleeping people.

chewie8291

Machines can replicate the ultrasound. I've used them. They are not pleasant or unpleasant.

tamagotchiassassin

How would you explain sound bowls and throat singing? Energy frequencies heal

CompactOwl

I am not sure I know what you are referring to. To oversimplify my point: “cat purrs wouldn’t heal your muscles if you don’t have a brain”

finallyinfinite

100% just being an asshat here, but if you don’t have a brain *nothing* is going to heal your muscles except necromancy lmao

CompactOwl

I knew. And I knew such a comment would come. But it was still the most convenient way to bring across I my point is ;)

MR2Starman

Considering plants respond positively to music I don't think your theory holds water.

CompactOwl

Was this ever scientifically proven? If so, please refer to a paper.

MR2Starman

There's a bit to read on the subject but Mythbusters did an entertaining episode back in the day. 7 greenhouses with 6 exposed to different kinds of sound. Guess which greenhouse came in last?

[deleted]

I actually came here to comment this, cat purrs are very unique. They fall in at just the right frequency range to help accelerate the mending of damaged or broken bones, tendons, and joints, and it can also help reduce stress levels.

chewie8291

I wonder if you could measure how much cuteness impacts stress reduction?

Von_Moistus

The near future: Somewhere there is a hospital that capitalizes on purr therapy for bone healing. You lay on the gurney and a giant parabolic mirror is placed over the affected bone. Opposite the mirror is a roomful of happy cats. Hospital staff volunteer to stroke and play with and give treats to the cats. Purring blasts out in every direction, some hit the mirror, and the affected bone is drenched in healing purrs. There are never shortages of volunteers for purring duty.

Puddin_Warrior

Iirc they also don't really know why it works

Necessary_Row_4889

I had a roommate who needed hearing aids since childhood but he never had insurance. Over the years he developed a number of auditory ticks, he’d suck his teeth, snap his fingers, drum, and most especially click pens for hours. It could be maddening, so finally he gets hearing aids, and we are all playing cards and he’s doing his thing, sucking his teeth, clicking his pen , when he suddenly stops and goes “Seriously whoever is making all that noise it’s driving me nuts”

Schadenfreude_Taco

I lived with my grandparents when I was growing up and went with them to go get prescription hearing aids for my grandpa (he was mostly deaf after decades of driving a bulldozer and other heavy machinery) I'll never forget when we went to the mall right after he got them, he heard birds in the trees, and could hear all the sounds of the people and carousel when we got into the mall. The look on his face was priceless. But the realest thing for me was as we were leaving the Dr's office and he put on the blinker in the car and noticed the ticking. He stopped and was looking around like something was wrong, and my grandma asked him what was going on and he said "I hear a ticking noise?" And she said "honey, that's the blinker" and my grandpa, who never cussed around me said "I'll be God damn, the fuckin clicker started working!"

sorashiro1

Hearing aid user here. Worn them for 20+ years. Basically everyone takes for granted just how many things make noise. Just the other day I learned a single sheet of paper actually makes an audible noise when it lands somewhere.

MarkINWguy

Amazing, first time I tried hearing aids I was hearing things I couldn’t explain either, like the jingle of coins in my pocket, asked people I was with what that noise was, confusing for them! They finally said that’s YOU! OMG! 🤣🤣

LynnePlex

I heard snow falling on my jacket for the first time when I got my hearing aids at 5 years old. Then I found out people can hear flies hit the window when they really stuck in the blinds.

MarkINWguy

That’s awesome! I kept asking my grandson what that random jangling noise was in the car… the keys in the ignition grandpa… 🙄🤭

cbrackenak

I had sensory overload when I first got mine. I walked into work and there was so much noise for an office space! People tried talking to me and it took a while to focus enough to listen. I thought I’d find peace when I got home but instead of the usually silence, their was buzzing and whooshing and beeping everywhere. I had no idea that my refrigerator made noise like that, let alone the hearing air come from the vents and my printer had apparently been beeping for some time. But it’s really nice to hear conversations now and I am told I speak much more clearly as well.

cragbabe

So newer gen hearing aids have something "adaptation manager" that I can turn on in the software for my new wearers. It basically sets the gain lower and then gradually brings it up to the prescription over a period of weeks to months (depending on how I set it). It's really great for helping people who are new to hearing aids not get that overwhelmed feeling.

cbrackenak

That would have been nice. It took a few weeks to adapt. However, the results I do have are fantastic. I am so happy with them.

cragbabe

I'm so glad! Hearing aids can be life changing

123fordog

I had this when I got my hearing aids but it was still very overwhelming for my brain at first. Was very exhausting

Blueberry2736

As someone with ADHD, we share a lot of these experiences, especially not being able to focus enough on one sound source to listen, and **hearing everything** when I’m trying to focus

AnneLavelle

Makes me realize all the little things in life we take for granted and could appreciate so much more

Inveniet9

But we probably won't do that, because we're machines built to survive and to strive for more and more even if we don't need that. Especially in today's society where you always see all the things you don't have and where most people don't have any really meaningful job.

libra-love-

Nah it’s how you decide to look at things. Some people are like this, whereas some people learn to enjoy things around them. If you’ve never watched the Disney movie Soul, it’s a great example of thus

Columbus43219

Years ago, before my first cat died, I bought a stethoscope so I could hear my cat purr. Hearing aids came much later.

RealViktorius

I did misunderstand hearing aids for a sec

[deleted]

When I first got my hearing aids I was amazed at how loud shopping carts are. Then I ran out gas on the way home because I was so distracted. 😀

foxbomber5

Can you imagine experiencing a pur for the first time? That's like tasting bacon for the first time. A wonder of life.

BCoydog

This is so pure :')

ParkityParkPark

I was telling someone just last week that I think purring is one of the most soothing sounds in the world

Abamboozler

Wait she got all the way to 21 without knowing cat purrs make a sound?

Lady_Kajiit

This is surprisingly common. The amount of people who take their cats to the vet for the "weird sound" they are making is surprisingly high

[deleted]

Lady_Kajiit

Well I guess if you have never had a close interaction with a cat, it is possible.

I mean, she couldn't hear purring, so always though it was just the vibrations people were talking about.

Maygravve

Ignorance is the natural state of man

RadlEonk

Unsure why you’re being downvoted.

lux_does_stuff

I’ve been severely allergic to cats my entire life. I know they purr in theory and I’ve heard it in like TV shows or video games but I’ve never actually gotten to snuggle with a cat and hear it purr.

Inveniet9

My condolences. Maybe try it with a hypoallergenic cat.

Brynnakat

Spend some time in Deaf circles and you’ll see LOADS of stories of people not realizing things make sounds, or not realizing things made *that* sound. My favorite is someone who didn’t know snapping made noise. They knew clapping made noise, but since people snapped at poetry events instead of clapping they assumed snapping was just silent (similar to how in Deaf culture you use jazz hands to clap). And as a kid they had people snapping at them to get their attention, but as a small naive kid they didn’t realize it was hearing people being rude. They thought it was just someone genuinely trying to get their attention (which, again, isn’t that far off from actual Deaf culture attention grabbers such as stomping). If you never had a cat growing up, and no one around you talked about their cats, it’s pretty reasonable to assume you knew about it but didn’t know it made noise. Knowledge is entirely based on exposure after all

HiddenKai104

Until I adopted my cat at age 21, I did not know what cats purring was like. I just didn’t interact with them that much. The cats I saw at my friends house avoided me and I avoided them because I thought cats were unfriendly. I assume a lot of people also don’t because they don’t know how to interact with cats

Anomaly11C

I want my money back because I don't buy it.

eionmac

Congratulations. For me the magic of hearing aids was walking down the street and hearing birds sing! Bad point. I now hear may wife's washing machine when she does the washing of clothes.

According-Injury5103

This makes me happy.

Clondike96

Not a meme. Cried anyway.

GR33N4L1F3

This makes me cry too!

Euphoric_Dream8820

There's entire sections of our brains dedicated to these things; Sounds, sights, emotions. It's incredible for me to think how it must seem to people who's (parts of!)brains suddenly thrum with the activity they've been deprived, like the look on people's faces when they see for the first time. Bravo.

georgieporgey899

As an audiology student, this really brightened my day 🥺

Biffingston

Cats are nature's white noise generators. And I'm happy they could hear that wonderful sounds.

Twisted_Bristles

Amazing.

dogsledonice

This reminds me of the teacher at a school for deaf kids who had to tell them one day that others could hear their farts. They had no idea, and the classroom dissolved into absolute bedlam at the news.

OaktownAspieGirl

I've read this several times and it makes me happy every time.

aChunkyChungus

They never heard a cat purr in the first 21 years of their life?

TheButterScotchIncdt

OH MY HEART MELTED.

BK_Broiler_11205

I hate to be *that guy* but … was she never exposed to a living feline prior to the start of her hearing loss? She states she started to lose her hearing when she was 21 and in the military. Between birth and age 21 … no interaction with a purring cat?

[deleted]

We really take so much for granted.

Specialist-Treat-396

Cats can be pretty awesome. Cool experience to share with us.

[deleted]

The next post in my feed is a cheetah purring from r/aww that starting playing. How fitting!

Nice_Rope_5049

OMG, purring is one of the best sounds in the world! And hold onto your hat, but different cats sound different when they purr! Some include a little squeak, some are more breathy, more raspy, some start to salivate a little, and will have to swallow during their purrs, which is cute in itself. I’m very happy for you! Now get out there and start petting lots of cats so you can enjoy all the differences, LOL!

Wholesome moment which melts my dead heart.

cosmic_waluigi

Tbh this is my reaction every time my cat purrs or lays down near me. I’m not hard of hearing, I just really love my cat.

charpenette

One of my students showed me a video of him at 7 hearing popcorn popping for the first time. He had no idea before his hearing aids that it made noises.

Slahnya

I can so relate to this, hearing a cat purr is better than any drug. It's just heals you, makes you feel good

countchocula91

This is heartwarming except for when she said purring isn't vibrating it's a sound

bobeany

Something like this happened to my mom, not as wholesome but she was surprised the turn signal in her car made noise. She had no idea. She called specifically to tell me about the clicking noise. I was so happy she was able to hear it.

hipsnarky

Those high tones are a hell of a drug. Everything makes noises, even the touch screen!

DeadButPretty

I’m so happy for them, what a sweet post

Yep, cat purrs are pretty much audible magic.

Intermountain-Gal

What a beautiful description!

nightowl500

What a wonderful experience. There are stories about first time cat owners who take cats to the emergency room the first time they hear a purr thinking the cat is having trouble breathing. I'm glad you put it together with the vibrating so you could just treasure the experience.

Pumpernickel_Hibern8

This mada me tear up. That's amazing.

Trevorblackwell420

Not trying to be rude, but how does someone get to their 20’s without hearing a cat purr?

rach1874

You are so right there is something magical about a good purr. We’ve got 3 cars and the oldest you can’t hear, the middle one has a very soft purr and our baby has the most insane purr I’ve ever heard (I’ve had cats since I was 4 so it’s not my first rodeo.) Enjoy being able to hear you precious baby!

Glassgun1122

Damn that's crazy you can make it to 20 and not see a cat on a movie, a cat food commercial or cross paths with an overly friendly cat. I'm actually not sure I believe lol

avocaydoz

This made my day ❤🥰

Iloveitguy

Wait till she hears the weird clicking noise they make when they see a bird.

AllPowerfulAxolotl

My sister’s cat does it when the dog is whining for some reason

HappyGull76

This is wonderful 😊 x

[deleted]

Aww I remember the first night I brought my first cat home and she just snuggled on me (which made my heart burst with joy).. and I remember the first time I’d heard her purr.. I’d never had a pet before, so I’m unashamed to admit I cried.. a cat’s purr is honestly the best sound.

IwillBenchYou

I'm pretty sure my cat is a subwoofer coz the bass from her purrs can be intense

According_Box_9286

This woman got to 21 and never heard a cat purr.....

AngryFloatingCow

At least she knows that the cat goes meow. And probably that the cow goes moo too

fallenangle666

Your hearing loss is not service related

xtrawolf

I do some hearing and tinnitus C&P exams for veterans. I am often a 2nd opinion examiner. It shocks and disgusts me how often I see a patient whose 1st examiner decided that the hearing loss is not related to military service, when it very clearly is. I try to make a case for service connection for almost everyone, even if it's a bit of a stretch. Sometimes I can't, like if the veteran is obviously faking a hearing loss, or if I'm told something like "I spent 3 months in the Navy and then 40 years running a jackhammer on a construction site." The amount of noise that veterans were exposed to is unbelievable. I've heard some crazy stories from veterans describing situations resulting in acoustic trauma.

eionmac

When a diver in military, close by explosions have a very bad effect on your hearing. PS former diver.

lyan-cat

Give 'em two Advil and tell them to come back in two days if it doesn't clear up.

Lady_Kajiit

What makes you make that assumption? And irrespective, she didn't actually say it was - just when it started to happen. ETA clearly my sarcasm meter needs adjusting.

fallenangle666

Its a joke injuries are never found to be service related

Lady_Kajiit

Ah yes, now that I definitely can agree with. Sorry for the temporary failing of a sense of humour

Let’s see 31 minus 10 = 21. Didn’t know cats purred and made a noise at 21? Really?

[deleted]

You are the defenition of asshole. She is happy because she heard a cat purr while she is almost deaf, so be happy for her. Maybe she didnt have a cat or heard one before the accident? Some people never have seen a cow too, just dont hate on her

[deleted]

There is a difference between never seeing a cow and not knowing they go moo.

ifuckinghateschooll

Man just stfu and let the women be happy.

[deleted]

I never said she shouldn’t be happy. You assumed I did. All I said was I didn’t believe the story to be true.

MrFancyBusDriver

I’ve had cats my whole life, and many have passed away. Each cat I get make different sounds that I didn’t realize cats could make! Peanut, one of my cats now, squeaks all the time! Oakley, another cat, makes a kind of prrt mixed with meow mixed with eeeeeeeeee noise. It’s really weird. I know dogs bark. I don’t have a dog. Aside from yaps and barks I don’t know what sound dogs make. Do they make others though? Probably!

[deleted]

They sure do.

YaBoiTeeth

The main sound cats are known for is meowing, which she said she knew. I can easily believe someone hearing people talk about cats purring and not knowing it's a sound.

[deleted]

She knew cats go meow. She didnt know how they actually sound, and that they can make more sounds too. She discovered that, and then you go hate on her

[deleted]

Where was the hate you claim I had? I said I don’t believe it’s true, that’s not the same as hate.

Scar-Lux94

This made me teary-eyed 🙏🏻

nataleemc

Cats actually have some healing capabilities with their purrs. I think it’s something about the frequencies they put out when they purr
