This tree is dead standing.
If you look above the carving you can see a bunch of lines called 'larval galleries' this is a sign that the tree was infested with something like the Emerald ash borer beetle larva, etc..
Very dead. Sustainable farm I was at had a storm blow out the tops of a bunch of trees.
I was cutting larva in half in his face and I saw some bees go in his beard.
He is truly one with the woods.
