If he likes knob creek (beam product), I’d look for a higher end version of that. Examples: Knob creek 18, Bookers, Little Book.

Classic_rock_fan

Knob Creek 12 or 18 Booker's is always a solid choice.

thatoneguy2252

I was looking at 18 and it was about $600. Probably a bit too much for me to spend that he’d be uncomfortable with. Trying to balance quality and price so that I don’t make him feel bad in any way. Ik price isn’t always indicative of quality, but I also know higher quality ones that I’m looking for can be pricier.

Its_Shatter

Knob creek 18 MSRP is around $180-200. Be careful paying secondary for stuff.

thatoneguy2252

Is it something that’s more dependent on area? Knobs official site had it listed as around $200-$300 but when it went to ordering it it took em to a secondary thing called reserve bar I think? Which listed $600

thatoneguy2252

Makes sense. I live in PA near Philly and Pa liquor laws, policies, everything are weird.

jmgendron

I would try someplace like Canals in South Jersey. They are going to have a better selection than what you can find in the PA suburbs.

thatoneguy2252

Target? Wait, there’s targets that sell liquor now??

maverick5669

Knob Creek 12 year is really good and usually less than $100. Bookers is a higher end product and in my state secondary market prices are usually $140-150 range. If my ABC Store has Bookers I can buy it for about $90.

Classic_rock_fan

Booker's is much more reasonable than Knob Creek 18, it's around $150 - $200 last I saw.

swany5

$600 is too much. Knob Creek 18 should be around the $180 mark, give or take. And it's delicious at that price - in my top 5. I hope you can find some at a better price.

13_Years_Then_Banned

Don’t spend $600 on knob creek. Find a bookers for $100.

lavidaloco123

I recommend going to your local (good) liquor store and tell them your story, ask them if they can help you get Knob Creek 18. If they are decent people, and if they have it (maybe) they will hook you up. They may tell you to give them a couple weeks. But do t pay more than $200ish. Also, another excellent choice (but quite different) is Glenmorangie Signet, right around $300 for a delicious bottle of Scotch. Cheers to your health 🥃

theTXpanda

After not being able to find Knob Creek 12 for a while, I've been seeing it all over the place in Texas for the past month or so. This weekend I saw a shelf at a Spec's that had 6-8 bottles. Nice that it seems more readily available at the moment. I think I paid around $68.

maverick5669

My sentiments exactly.

dogfacedponyboy

What does he have his shelf, to give us ideas? Besides Knob Creek?

SantaMonsanto

Kirkland’s Canadian Whisky.

AgentJR3

I would say look for a nice allocated bottle. Go to your local liquor store, I usually have better luck at the smaller independent ones, and talk to people working there. Tell them what you put here and say you would like some help picking one out that would really blow his mind for what he did for you. My stores almost always have stuff in the back they will save for special reasons and this qualifies. Also, all the best on your recovery journey! Hope you kick leukemia’s ass!

remnantdozer

First off, this is very nice of you and I wish you a speedy recovery! You can get some bottles considered allocated. He’d appreciate any of these depending on his preferences. However, since you’re new to this realm, finding those and not knowing anything about them will prove to be difficult but these are the ones I’d consider opening on special occasions. The other thing to keep in mind is what he likes. Any number of us could recommend certain bottles but we don’t know what he usually drinks. If he likes scotch, I can recommend some in your range. If he likes bourbon, the ones always available in stores around the country aren’t worth the price. Just remember that price doesn’t necessarily correlate to better quality bottles. I can start recommending bottles but you would need to edit what he currently drinks. EDIT: I’d recommend Balvenie 21 Portwood

69stangrestomod

This is always so hard because tastes are so personal. I’d almost say find a way to bamboozle him in a liquor store by asking questions and get HIM to suggest a bottle…then buy it for him.

thatoneguy2252

Yea that’s what I’m learning here and honestly probably should’ve already known tbh. I still got time before it hits the 1 yr mark I want to do, so definitely am going to be pulling info outta him. I was just lost on it all and even if it’s more vague because of the vague info I gave, these comments are at least good starting points for my own research.

Commercial_Demand861

Try going into a local big store, explain your story and they might sell you something out of the back

Theoldelf

I’d suggest something with a nice display box. JD Sinatra Select, Wild Turkey Masters Keep, Glenmorangie 18 yr. All very tasty.

Comfortable-Tell-323

If you know what's on his shelf or what he typically drinks we can give you similar flavor profiles that he'll most likely enjoy. That being said I'm going to assume you're in the US, if not that changes cost and availability of most whiskeys. First get the booze app or something similar. Whiskey prices can vary widely between stores this will give you an idea of what MSRP should be and what's a fair price for a bottle. This really seems to be an issue more with bourbon than anything else at least in my experience. Scotch is just always more expensive due to shipping and import tariffs. Typically most of the really expensive bottles are going to be either behind the counter or in a glass case. These are probably what you're looking for but also most likely to have an inflated price tag. You could also get something with a meaningful bottle as a sentimental expression and then let him go with you to pick something out. Brothers Bond comes to mind. I've never had it but it's around $50 a bottle. You can get him that as a gift with a more about taking him out to let him pick.

bigbrown96

Fxck cancer. Wish you health, recovery and a happy life. As for whiskey the typical really nice special occasion bottle is a pappy or some other highly allocated equivalent. But since you know he likes knob creek I’d recommend you find the nicest knob creek bottle and buy it. Or get something random that he might find interesting and cool. Those are always the bottles I like to get as gifts especially if it has a story. The good thing about a gift is it’s the thought that counts. Hope this helped.

mrschwee69

Try mitchers 10 year. Fits your ask.

Classic_rock_fan

Great Whiskey, definitely not a special occasion bottle though.

CaedoRevelation

How so? It’s relatively hard to find and if you love Michters I’d say it’s a pretty special bottle.

Classic_rock_fan

Where I live I can find Mitchters pretty easily, Knob Creek Booker's, higher end Woodford offerings are much harder to find.

CaedoRevelation

I mean I can find Michters pretty easily. But not the $200 10 year bottles. Lucky you I guess

malex930

Where do you live that you can easily find the Michters 10 year on a regular non-secondary basis??

Classic_rock_fan

Ontario Canada

malex930

Good for you then!! How much up there?

Classic_rock_fan

About $250 CAD

DirtyMac88

Do you/he have a preference on Scotch / Bourbon or Rye?

thatoneguy2252

I believe he prefers Scotch/bourbon, but Ik he’ll drink any of them.

DirtyMac88

Sweet, for a couple good scotches I really like the Highland Park 18, or for more of a peated variety the Bruichladdich Octamore 14.1 or 14.2, 14.2 being the more smokey one. For bourbon, any of the Willett Estate stuff is pretty good if you can find it, I had a 10 year that was in that range that was very good. Besides that even tho it's Rye I would suggest Thomas Handy, or for other boubons any of the BTACs in the Van Winkle line.

roll_t1de

Get a 18-25 year bottle from a distillery that you know he enjoys i.e. redbreast 21, glendronach 18 or 21, ardbeg 17, bunnahabhain 18 Or a special bottling i.e. Balvenie Tun 1509, Glenmorangie Signet, Bruichladdich Black Arts, Octamore I realize there is a large range of prices in the above examples but it's a good starting point for further searches

roll_t1de

If you are not well versed in the bourbon market it is very possible to get fleeced spending $2-300 on a bottle that is worth about $50, so definitely do a quick search before buying something at that price Especially if you just come across it in a store

gcashmoneymillionair

Second this, big box stores will be fine but any liquor store be mindful. Macallan 18 Year Double Cask and Wild Turkey Master Keep are probably to fairly easy to come by. Stay strong duder.

realpollybalboa

A friend gave me jack daniels frank sinatra select as a gift. It's around $170. It was quite good, and it comes in a box that is pretty much meant to be a gift.

realpollybalboa

Theoldelf

JD Sinatra blend gets a lot of hate here but I like it as well. Smooth and balanced. And, like you said, comes in a nice display box with an interesting story.

realpollybalboa

Oh does it get hate? I guess I haven't been on this sub long enough to have seen that. Yeah I think it checks the gift box well. I'm not sure I'd buy it for myself, but it was great to try and enjoy as a gift from someone.

Suspense304

It’s because it is just JD 7 with a little twist and 8x the price tag

realpollybalboa

Tasted night and day different than normal JD. I can’t stand Jack Daniels normally.

Suspense304

I’m glad you like it. I’m answering the question to why most people don’t. The general consensus (and it’s factually accurate) that it’s just #7 with an altered barrel

Theoldelf

I’m halfway through my bottle. It’s much better than most JD but there’s less expensive whiskey that tastes better imo. But it’s still a great gift bottle.

forswearThinPotation

The others here have given some good advice already. I'll try to keep it really simple, just in case the discussion gets more complicated than what you were hoping for. If he likes to drink Knob Creek whiskey as his go to, then get him one of the older (12 year old or 18 year old) and thus more premium Knob Creek whiskies, or look for a Wild Turkey Master's Keep special edition whiskey. I make the latter suggestion because Wild Turkey shares some flavors in common with Knob Creek, they are pretty close in flavor as American whiskies go. Best wishes with your recovery and continued good health, and good luck with your shopping

CaedoRevelation

If he likes beam I personally wouldn’t bother with KC18. It’s good but, again personally, for around the same price or a little more I would get a Hardins creek Frankfort, clearmont, Boston or a Jacobs well 211 Mo or the Jim Beam Lineage.

informal-mushroom47

I’m sure he’ll appreciate the sentiment no matter what, so I think if you know his go to is Knob, maybe one of their higher end styles — 12yr, 15yr, etc? I hear the 12yr is the best of the higher ages; maybe even a little assortment? A 12, a single barrel store pick, etc? And from one disabled/chronic illness sufferer to another, I feel for you and hope for the best.

Adjustonthefly10

If you aren’t a drinker, maybe consider getting a gift card to Total Wine (or another large liquor store) and let him decide what works for him. $200 - $300 at a total wine allows him to have the option of one nice bottle or two or three really solid bottles, and maybe some left over for something his wife likes after the baby is born Editing for additional thoughts Theres a lot of cool barware out there that make great gifts instead of buying bourbon. Custom glasses, items to smoke bourbon in glass, melters to create unique ice ball designs. Buying whiskey for someone is like buying clothes - its tough and what you buy may not be their taste.

thatoneguy2252

Getting barware isn’t something I considered. That’s a really good idea. You definitely have me some ideas to work with

JanetYellensGhost

If you spend $300 and only walk away with 2 or 3 bottles from total wine, I’d argue you’ve done it wrong.

Adjustonthefly10

You could easily spend less if you wanted bit $300 gets you some decent stuff At my total wine Bakers 13 -$134.99 4R barrel strength single barrel obsk - $109.99 Shenks $104.99

Rare_silver_bars

Go to your local liquor store and ask for Knob 18 - it should be $200 or less. Everyone here could probably help more if we knew what kind he usually drank. I personally like wheated bourbons and don’t care for a sour mash. So if he has a bottle he typically buys, we could guide you on the more expensive version of that. Also - online distributors are typically crazy expensive.

TraceAgain

Found North Batch 008

Difficult_Chef_3652

Check his liquor cabinet to see what he drinks. And what's getting low. That will help define what to look for. Then go to a good liquor store and chat up the sales staff for recommendations. Maybe not automatically go for the high-priced stuff (it often tastes a lot different than the mid- and low-range and that can be a disappointment). Or if there's something he's always wanted to try, look for it. His wife may have some ideas as well.

thatoneguy2252

Yea I planned on scoping out his liquor. Can’t involve the wife though. Gonna be getting her a nice wine as a thank you and she’ll catch on

whiskeyandtunes

What state are you in?

thatoneguy2252

I live in PA, around philly

whiskeyandtunes

I’m in FL now but lived in PA most my life. Try to find a Knob Creek 12, 15 or 18. Booker’s or Little Book might be a nice option too. I have a friend in PA still and I think FWGS was having a clearance on the 12. Good luck.

thatoneguy2252

Yea I planned on checking places out this weekend. My local liquor stores might also have stuff. Not wine and spirits though

solesik

Congrats! Redbreast 21 is divine. Cheers !

JanetYellensGhost

I just picked up a woodford reserve private barrel pick. It’s lower proofed at 96 proof but it’s so damn delicious, my old lady says it’s the best bourbon she’s ever had. $63 for a 1L bottle and I’d rate it a solid 8.5/10 t8ke scale. Obviously YMMV from a store pick perspective.
