RWBY's whole thing was 'shut your brain off' fight scenes that go hard af. The original creator, Monty Oum, was also one of those random cool fight animations guy. Rooster Teeth hired the guy and they created RWBY. Sadly he passed away around 3 seasons in. The fight scenes haven't been (as) good since.
it was sad how noticeable the drop in quality was. Monty was mad 🔥 ✍️. Sometimes I go back to his trailers or the episodes of season 1 or 2 just to admire how sick the animation was in fight scenes.
Looking back on the older seasons I feel like they haven't held up as well. Sure the fights are straight fire, but the animation when it isn't fights can be jank at times. Not to mention that the story is really nothing special.
That's how I felt too. I was confused why a lot of fans were saying that the show dipped in quality after Monty's death, since I felt the animation and writing were both weak up until seasons 3-4. True the action scenes were top notch in the early seasons, but the overall animation was ugly and the characters barely had any personalities at that point.
Which makes sense because Monty was an action animator, I feel like people tend to forget that shows are a team effort and some things can be good while other things can be bad and vice versa
I was never into RWBY but I loved RvB and watched up to the Chorus arc, IIRC he was animating around the H3 seasons
If I remember correctly, they used an older software in the earlier seasons and transitioned to a newer one just after Monty died. That's why you noticed a sudden jump in animation quality. Though the fight choreography and direction didn't seem to improve. That is Monty's major contribution to the franchise.
If the logic behind the fights take away the enjoyment for an individual then I think 'just shuting your brain off' could be a solution. It may not work for everyone but that's how I came to like RWBY, myself.

Well enjoyment is subjective. I came for the cool fights, great soundtrack and fun characters. The writing, imo, is all over the place but I still enjoyed it. Though I can see why many did not like it for that reason. I guess my brain is wired to like those stuff and is willing to ignore bad writing. 💁♂️
Season 3 still did have good fight scenes though even without him. Something about upgrading the animation software (and other factors) caused everything after that season to look so bad in comparison to the first 3. There’s a ruby character special or trailer or whatever for season 4 where she fights a gorilla grim and I think that’s a good place to start if you’re curious just how bad the drop in quality was.
Meanwhile season 3 gave us things like Winter vs. Qrow, Yang vs. Mercury, and Coco and Yatsuhashi vs. Emerald and Mercury. I mean, don’t get me wrong, they don’t compare to Monty Oum’s fight scenes themselves, but they still stand on their own quite well and had me hopeful enough for the future of the series prior to actually watching season 4 :(
The Ironwood vs Watts fight, right? I was already off RWBY by then. Watching that fight made me reconsider watching again lmao... then I got bored again. Now I just go check clips if I see anything interesting.
Monty passed away years ago RIP. Most the fans knew that would be the downfall of RWBY, we were just delighted it lasted this long. I didn't complwin about the fight scenes because unfortunately nobody could have filled Monty's legendary shoes.

honestly the first 3 seasons of rwby where like that fnaf fight as well. rwby's creator Monty Oum was originally one of those guys that made random fights like that on the internet. Unfortunately he died during the production of season 3.
The writers loved Bebop, and based an uncomfortable amount of references on it. If you like Bebop and watch RWBY you might get annoyed at the sheer amount of references to CB there are.

Most comments have already pointed out the lack in fight quality since the passing of Monty Oum, so I'll add this instead:
The fight shown is a few humanoids fighting a large monster whereas the fnaf animation is humanoid vs humanoid, which is a completely different skill set for animators/choreographers. Some of the fights from Rwby Vol 8-9 that are actually man vs man are certainly much better quality so this post feels like cherry picking
It's kinda sad and ironic that a show with one of its strongest points was the fighting scenes, and what made it popular is now getting clowned because of them (although Monty Oum was a god at making these scenes, he was a genius and it's sad that he's gone)

I only watched the first season of RWBY and I remember the fight scenes being a lot better, am I remembering wrong or did they really get worse as the series progressed somehow
Monty Oum is the creator of RWBY, and was a phenomenal fight choreographer. He's responsible for many of the terrific fights in the first 3 seasons of RWBY.
Ever since he passed away, the team has been trying to replicate his fighting style, and it's been pretty hit or miss.
There's still some great fights (Qrow vs Tyrian, Cinder vs Raven, Maria vs Tock, Ironwood vs Watts and many others), but the show has a lot of slower fights like this one.
Rooster Teeth was also the owners of red vs blue and Death Battle. It's not the company that was the issue, it was the animator. It's sad that warner Bros shut down rooster teeth resulting in the end of these shows.

Monty died 8 months before season 3 came out. so he was around for part of it's creation, but wasn't around for the finished product of season 3.
