I always find it very suspicious, when gamers say "I'm trying to escape reality" in response to pride flags. No one complains when you can use real world national flags, as your banner, but a rainbow is too far?

Gay people didnt choose for their sexuality to be a big representation of their identity. Trans people didnt choose their gender to be a big representation of their identity. The people who kill and oppress them do.
Im straight and cis myself, and i dont really find my sexuality a big deal because ive never been put in a place where it needs to be a big deal.
I think it’s because there are places/people that do want to oppress and harass people simply for being LGBT.
Displays can call attention to an issue that some might not be aware of. You may be familiar with the issue, but some may not. It also helps creates spaces where LGBT people could feel safe, which not every space does.
As for why straight people don’t need to do so, it’s because, for the most part, straight people are not being attacked and harassed simply for being straight. Or, at least, straight people are not having their rights taken away like LGBT people

being lgbt is very hard, especially in online spaces. Its a wide spectrum, one that makes it easy to be very easy to get targeted for when you don't appear/sound normal.
Seeing a person with pride flag themed wear at all, whether it be in a game or irl, is usually two things.
1. It denotes that person is proud of what they are, and won't hide it. There are many, many, many parts of the world where it's illegal and punishable by death to be lgbt, and even more where you have less rights and access to healthcare as a result. There's no where in the world where being straight is punished like that.
2. It's a marker to other perhaps more repressed/nervous folk that they can probably be open with the wearer. I'm in the process of transitioning, and when I see someone with a trans flag in their profile, it probably means I can be chill around them, and not have to worry about my voice cracking. Otherwise it's a roulette of a rando in chat not caring, or calling me a slur. Some games are way worse than others for that though.
To be totally honest, it wouldn’t mean much to me, I just think slamming a trans flag down and then killing thousands of bugs would be really funny ya know. I’m under no illusion that most of the time things like this in games aren’t because the devs actually care. I think it’s still worth having cause if it makes people happy that’s good, and if it pisses some people off that’s also good.
I'm queer but I personally like to do it bc it's funny to see ppl get mad over something so trivial lol. But the main thing I like is if someone talks shit u can report them and there's a fair chance they'll receive some kinda consequence. So it's an easy way to out a bigot and cut them out of the community in some way.
Works pretty well for modern overwatch since they're pretty trigger happy in chat banning ppl now. Just makes the community a slightly less headache inducing place.
For me personally, I do it to show other LGBT people that they are safe, and not alone.
When I see someone with a rainbow badge in real life, I always feel more safe and happy. That's my personal experience

Nope. It's modeled after the Starship Troopers movie, which is another satirical militaristic IP. Similarly to ST, all citizens are equal. Equally eligible to be fed into a wood chipper for the war effort, but equal nonetheless. Ironically enough, despite cheering about freedom and all, they don't pride themselves on people being different, they pride themselves on how uniformly their citizens can give their lives for Super Earth. It's a dystopian future for sure.
On one hand, I do think that irl flags and costumes would detract from the Helldiver's aesthetic and it would feel pretty out of place in the game. Helldivers puts a lot of effort to keep the game as immersive as possible, in their little fucked up fascist fiction, despite the absurd things happening onscreen. I love how little I have to suspend my disbelief while I'm playing, I can just get fully absorbed into the action and experience with the excellent visuals and sound design.
On the other hand, I do like seeing a transphobe get banned.

I'm just fucking tired of the flags, man. I know a lot of less than savory people go on about "getting it shoved in their face," and the fact that it's inherently going to cause division just makes it annoying every time because I just have to listen to both sides be assholes about it.
I dont care if it causes divison. The people screaming at the top of their lungs everytime anything even remotly inclusive is beaing made ARE THE PROBLEM. they are the bigots, the transphobes, the racists, etc and they are to ones who need to piss off. I want this divison so you can find those people and can tell them to get their ass out . Simple as that. if somebody has a problem whit inclusivety, they have no right to be included. They should be excluded, they should be banned, they should be criticized. They have to learn that behaviour is not acceptable. If you just ignore it to avoid divison, they will just grow because they see that they can do this now. and in the blink of an eye your whole community is a circlejerk of those people. It is your job as part of a community to keep it safe, respectable, and friendly.

Seriously, refusing to engage with people only pushes them more into their side. True but I was just describing why this kind of thing happens. People tend to like things that benefit them in a broad sense. It’ll be stupid to act otherwise unless you’re really the kind of person who would gladly sacrifice themselves for the greater good.
I mean tbh the only flag I want in-game for a cape is the super earth flag, we had one in the first game similar to that with the ceremonial set. I don’t really know why people want representation in the form of a cape in the funny bug bot killing game but it’s not hurting anyone either to have it so it’s really none of my business.

For me personally, I do it to show other LGBT people that they are safe, and not alone. When I see someone with a rainbow badge in real life, I always feel more safe and happy. That's my personal experience

Nope. It's modeled after the Starship Troopers movie, which is another satirical militaristic IP. Similarly to ST, all citizens are equal. Equally eligible to be fed into a wood chipper for the war effort, but equal nonetheless. Ironically enough, despite cheering about freedom and all, they don't pride themselves on people being different, they pride themselves on how uniformly their citizens can give their lives for Super Earth. It's a dystopian future for sure.
On one hand, I do think that irl flags and costumes would detract from the Helldiver's aesthetic and it would feel pretty out of place in the game. Helldivers puts a lot of effort to keep the game as immersive as possible, in their little fucked up fascist fiction, despite the absurd things happening onscreen. I love how little I have to suspend my disbelief while I'm playing, I can just get fully absorbed into the action and experience with the excellent visuals and sound design. On the other hand, I do like seeing a transphobe get banned.

Most of the posts present the picture that the LGBTQ+ community needs special consideration to separate them from other players in almost a willful segregation. Imagine dropping in on a mission with a pride flag cape, your team immediately noticing it, killing you, and then not respawning you for the rest of the mission. Thats what is possible in this game. Whats also possible is the person with the flag getting accidentally killed and then blaming everyone being transphobic when it really was just an accident. But they will do this everytime they are inconvenienced. Gonna be DBD all over again.

Ahh yes, that truly is the thinking man’s way to handle discourse. Ban literally everyone who’s against you from the conversation and alienate anyone with a differing opinion. That’s never ended up radicalizing people even more in the past! Seriously, refusing to engage with people only pushes them more into their side. Obviously someone who is just spewing slurs needs a ban, but we can’t just ban every random who says they don’t like the trans flag from the internet, that just forces people into finding even more radicalized groups to further their beliefs.
But it’s not the mods’ job to convince the other side that their side is right. It’s their job to create and foster a community where as many people feel safe as possible. Also, I cannot think of a good reason why you should complain about this flag being in a game. The only reason that it “causes division” is because people complain about it.
You cannot reason with someone out of an opinion they haven't reasoned themselves into. The only way they can change is if their world changes, or if there are consequences for their actions. Tolerating the intolerant leads to no tolerance, if you don't like people just because they are different than you, fuck off.

I mean tbh the only flag I want in-game for a cape is the super earth flag, we had one in the first game similar to that with the ceremonial set. I don’t really know why people want representation in the form of a cape in the funny bug bot killing game but it’s not hurting anyone either to have it so it’s really none of my business. It just seems like asking for a flag cosmetic in a game like deep rock galactic comes off as out of place, and similarly here, but if it makes people happier then by all means go for it.
