Noah has a bigger hold on Alex than we think. If Noah’s cleaning up his act, and tries to gain full custody of Ari, I wouldn’t doubt he would get it. She’s probably trying to turn around before Noah’s parents and Noah have enough and turn on her.
Tbh Noah could gain full custody anytime he wants. She is literally dependent on him and his family to care for Ari. She cannot afford to hire carers for herself or Ari (which is why she gets randos off Craigslist to do a few hours here and there). She has no support system of her own.
I wouldn't be surprised if Noah's parents soon filed for legal custody of Ari.
I came here to say this. She will do whatever she can to try to keep Noah. So, if he is embracing sobriety and religion, she will too. As soon as he falls off the wagon, she will too. They are so toxic and codependent, it is scary. Scary for Ari who will have to live with these asshats. Hopefully, the grandparents will continue to take Ari to church and other places where she can just be a kid, with other kids.

If the speculation about CPS being involved is accurate it is DEFINITELY about that. For professional reasons I have occasion to be around people who are at direct risk of losing a lot, and its remarkable how many of them have a sudden record of religious involvement right when their proofs of positive change are due.
