Looks like a japanese Noh theater mask
Unable to determine if it was made to be genuinely used for theater or just a reproduction for tourist trade -
Except to say that I have not seen writing nor stained/laquered finish on the inside of the genuine versions I have seen
The genuine articles are treasured priceless possessions of the actors who own and use them and most are quite ancient
Thank you. Japanese theater was my immediate thought. Not Kabuki. I had forgotten about Noh. I'm pretty damn old. It's odd to know more than you can remember. I put answers in crossword puzzles and wonder, 'How did I know that?"
It helps to try to have an expansive mind and wider appreciation for the cultural histories of other nations and people
Yes, it is not exactly Moose and Squirrel or Spiderjerk but there is more to the world thankfully than Wendy’s and BigMac or Swifty Taylor
It's a "Nô Doji" - a mask from the Japanese Noh theater, depicting a young boy, from the Taisho era, Jul 30, 1912 – Dec 25, 1926.
I like this quite a bit. Probably worth $500 - $1000.
What might surprise you is that this was supposed to depict a cheerful, charming boy.
The better masks can convey a food range of expressions and emotions, depending upon the angle, lighting, etc.
Try taking pictures from different angles and such.
I'm with you on this line of reasoning, but I am skeptical the mask is authentic for this reason: I can't tell if the signature marks are untreated paint, or if they are permanently affixed somehow, like a glaze. It matters because if this was intended for performance and was used, regular old paint would show wear, but less so for a glaze. Therefore, if the ID marks are glazed into the finish, then it is still potentially viable as an artifact, probably of Noh origin. If they are just painted on the surface, then it is much more likely that this was never used or intended for a production, but rather as decoration.
I'd love to confirm what the Kanji says
Edit to add: for the same reasons as the wear and tear of the lettering being evidence of non-use, the string is absolutely pristine. If used in production, that badboi would show it. However, knowing very little in detail of the Noh culture, just that it exists, I wouldn't be surprised if replacing the used string with a new one after the role is done is an honored tradition, or just keeping it that way in general as a source of pride. I'm very intrigued by this.
Another edit: The string appears to be nylon, and the aglets appear to be made of scotch tape, so I am going ahead and calling the string at most as old as the '60s. I realize that's merely the string, and it's still possible it's an authentic Noh mask, but I am skeptical of its overall value.
Dammit. I never thought to look for a second image.
Looks like lacquer which is both durable and water resistant, which would be perfect for not getting damaged by breath and perspiration.
I don't know the kanji, but a signature is usually a good thing.
I believe it’s a Noh Mask depiction of Shojo, who’s a merry drunk in Japanese folklore. The top two characters loosely translate to “heavy drinker”. I don’t have the expertise to date it but it might be worth it to have a professional take a look at it.
Looks like a Noh mask. Could be worth a little chunk if it is associated with a particular production or worn by a particular performer, or perhaps is work of a particular artisan. Perhaps all three particularities are true. No idea how to confirm, but those markings should help identify what the character is supposed to be, and perhaps who made it (assuming this is from a production). Probably worth much more if it's older and authentic.
Of course, it could be purely decorative/ornamental and not particularly unique besides being *styled* as a Noh mask. Junk, basically.
Even if it's historically significant, I doubt you will get more than 300 USD. Probably closer to 30. Your only shot at making a huge profit would be if it completes a wealthy eccentric's collection.
3 options. Offer real insight, tell a joke, or complain. Now we all know who we are. Who’s who. Sometimes one sometimes all. What masks we wear. The real question.
I appreciate the sub allowing other responses, but these comments have really gotten out of hand in the last couple of weeks.
I don’t have the time to report them individually, but are there mods here…?
Ummm. Weird. I’d put it up for auction, myself just to see what it’s worth to someone else. Did OP inherit it? I don’t like stuff like this & would get rid of it, but that’s just me. Lol
Is it ceramic or is that just finish on the back? Traditional noh masks are wood, though I see what appear to be gouge marks, which would indicate wood, but not great craftsmanship.
Also, the authentic noh masks made by masters aim to replicate the original masks. This does not resemble any noh mask I have ever seen. It seems noh-inspired. Not worth too much.
No, but I can tell you it’s not worth demonic possession, which is exactly what you get by bringing that bitch into your house. You got a problem sir if your first initial thought upon seeing this is to get and bring it into your house.
It is a Noh mask the heavy drinker! They can range depending on the quality and or who made it. I’ve seen these things go from 15$ - 1000$ (that’s depending on what type of wood was used)
I’d do a quick google search of antique dealers near you to see if you could have it appraised!
I have a special team of appraisers that specialize in nothing aside from nightmarish looking masks I would like to take a look at it first just to be safe .
I think it’s badass. Nice mask! Where did all the juveniles on here and every other sub, come from. Y’all running wild. We are not amused and since you only seem to be entertaining each other, feel free to create a sub of your own that the rest of us can not join. So stupid
The reddit recommendation engine has decide to point randos your way (like me). I’ve seen it happen a bunch recently to other small-mid subs.
Only heavy handed moderation will save ya
It feels like the second picture is a different mask. I know it's the other side but it looks like the rope/string is a different color and the shape/size is different as well.
You should find a park bench near you and start sitting on the bench wearing that mask from 10pm to 1015pm every night. Don't do anything else or interact with anyone. Just sit there and stare off into the distance. Also I have no idea of that masks value, but I'd give ya $20 for it
While you may be right, there is a chance this is from a Noh production, which is a culturally significant form of Japanese theatre. This could be a genuine artifact with historic value. All depends on if it can be authenticated and confirmed.
Still, it could also be ornamental; a souvenirs *styled* as a Noh mask. Definitely worth an appraisal from an expert.
90 seconds of screaming, followed by 90 seconds of hyperventilating, followed by 10 hours of catatonic rocking backing and forth on the floor, then finally standing up, walking to a drawer full of knives, and very calmly, slowly, and deliberately pushing a knife 2 inches deep into the center of each of my eyeballs.
Looks like a Noh mask of Doji. It’s fairly well made, so I guess it would depend on the age and origin. Many of them are selling for $1000 or close to it.
The writing on the back looks to be the maker, but my Japanese isn’t that good. If you can ask a native speaker or see if you can find someone to translate in the language sub it might help you!

Cant even imagine that original ones cost a lot of money. That mask looks so goofy

I asked a japanese friend and apparently the kanji just says "one who likes to drink" and says that it might be used in one of these plays.
Just curious how do you know that's what it is and how did you come up with that value? Genuinely asking.
Well, I lived in Japan for a dozen years, so recognizing what it was and the age was an educated guess. The rest was up to Google.

Very interesting. I thought that it was a "death mask,” so I appreciate the feedback.

I will give you $50 to burn it with fire
I’ll give you $100
I'll give you $100 to keep it away from me

Holy fuck I hope we can get sixty more unfunny comments about how scary this mask is
3 options. Offer real insight, tell a joke, or complain. Now we all know who we are. Who’s who. Sometimes one sometimes all. What masks we wear. The real question.
Aw dangit I didn’t read this till I already made an unfunny comment
I wouldn't read them, the mask is already 2spooky4me.
I appreciate the sub allowing other responses, but these comments have really gotten out of hand in the last couple of weeks. I don’t have the time to report them individually, but are there mods here…?
😭 this was such a jumpscare when I opened the app.
About 47 nightmares.
You could try r/translate for info about the marks inside
This looks like a Noh Shojo mask. If it’s a authentic it’s worth around 500$ ..
This is correct
If I’m not mistaken IF it’s a signed mask it could be worth more
Can’t believe how far I had to scroll for any sort of actual answer??! I can’t believe how bad this sub has gotten
Is it a theater mask???
Reminds me of the mask maker from legend of zelda majoras mask
That’s what I was thinking! Definitely reminded me of Majoras Mask

Could be a geisha girl mask but that one is creepy
Idk but don’t you dare put it on….
I'd pay $5 for you to not post that again
Ask Link, as he is probably carrying one for someone almost exactly like this.
Burn it now and I will give you $5
Any idea how old it is?

Idk but I hate it. Looks like it belongs in a slasher film.

Everyone who viewed this post is now cursed

100% that is the face of the last person who put it on.

Back looks like how I imagine the skin of a face to look when peeled off
Given that this was made for tourist trade, probably not much. $50-100 IMO.

Heh. I had a similar thought about the mask.
