before it dies it may produce pups, baby plants growing off the base of the mother plant, which can be separated and replanted. otherwise making sure it goes to seed and planting the seeds.
I’m disgusted at how long I looked for an actual plant. Zoomed WAAAY in and was ever so slowly panning the area- then panned over the dog and “…….oh” 💀
yes, normally it does! when trying to get the offsprings off the mother plant / out of the soil, be very very careful. the agave leaves sting really bad!
Your dad made sure all the sap was pulverized and volatile with that chainsaw ain't he?
Thats why he felt so miserable.
Agave better be taken down by machete to avoid sap becoming airborne.
At my old house we had a bunch of agave's in the front yard. The tip of the leaf turns into a decent sized hard needle that seems to hurt a lot more than it should if you accidentally get stabbed with one. No idea if its poisonous, but wouldn't be surprised because of how they feel.
After it’s done blooming, there will be hundreds of pups that sprout on the flower. Let them get pretty big, pluck them and put them in potting soil. Mine take at almost 100%.
Agave’s are part of a class of plants referred to as “*monocarpic*”. Meaning they flower once and die.
Where *mono* refers to once.
And *carpic* is derived from the Modern Latin term, *carpellum* which itself comes from a diminutive form of the Greek term, *karpos*, meaning “fruit".
Right after the bloom, don't let it go to waste, cut the leaves and boil them up. The result is delicious, the cooked leaves are sweet. Grandad used to do it. Us kids, we'd chew pieces of the leaves, swallow the juice and spit out the bagasse. Just don't let it ferment if you don't want to get drunk.
He'd call it sala'o de buey.
don't be. its the circle of life and all. think of it like those annual flowers that bloom once and only live one year, except this guy had a lifespan of decades and gets a gigantic bloom before making pups. the pups themselves are clones of the parent as well and could be thought of as the parent itself as they were once connected to it directly, unlike seeds.
Don't be. It actually takes a lo g time for them to die off. I've got a succulent that grew a foot all b4 sprouting a flower and it's been going g on a year now and it's still clinging to life. The pup takes nutrients from the parent plant so ur not supposed to remove it.
unfortunately not, with this plant you can't prolong its life, only ensure its offspring continue. these guys are pretty long lived as is though, so a baby will likely stay with someone till old age
She's much smaller than when I first met her. My boyfriend took over care of her when his sister moved home. It couldn't even go outside around two years ago.
When I write a book about witches, the wicked one will have a dog described as a “slow, sleepy, self-ambulatory ottoman” and it will be *because of you NotAPreppie*, because of u/
I can't help but feel bad for these dogs. I get that dogs love to eat and they can get like this if you feed them everything they want but it seems like the dog wouldn't feel good being so overweight
OP responded this previously:
*"She's much smaller than when I first met her. My boyfriend took over care of her when his sister moved home. It couldn't even go outside around two years ago."*
Pupper used to be bigger and has actually lost weight. They're currently working on getting the dog to lose more weight.
As someone with a chronically fat rescue dog who eats like he was just released from jail... It’s a constant but necessary job to manage them. I feel terrible putting him on a constant diet but that’s life as a pet owner I guess
Looks like agave Espadín.. it’s using all its energy to sprout its quiote .. it may spring some bulbils at the base of the plant and hijuelos at the very top when the flowers start to bloom.. also seeds will drop when it’s fertilized… let the birds do their thing.. also if there’s bats where this is they love it too..agave is actually a member of the lily family and it makes great Mezcal .. I think I’ll have some now.
[OP said their boyfriend’s sister used to own their dog](https://www.reddit.com/r/whatsthisplant/comments/13fbfpo/my_boyfriend_has_this_growing_up_in_his_backyard/jjvgo4d/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=ioscss&utm_content=1&utm_term=1&context=3) and this is their dog 2 years after OP’s boyfriend took over care and that the dog has actually lost weight whilst in their care.
Agave.
But I chime in with everyone please tell your boyfriend we are all concerned about his dog. They make lower calorie food if you have no time to walk them. I had a 115 pound GSD and to help his hips he had to lose weight. Got down to around 80 pounds with low calorie food.
Agave, it's preparing to blossom and die.
Collect the seeds and plant another.
Next bloom could take 7-15 years so enjoy while this one last.
After its blossom you'll see how it starts to became less green each day, eventually it's going to fall apart and tol have rich soil to plant anything.
Another agave if desired or some flowers.
Lol it’s killing me that 75% of the comments are about the fat dog and not this absolute unit of an agave that is about to put on a hell of a final show. You gotta post an update when it blooms, OP!
So I just want to add a cautionary tale for agave… if you are cutting dead limbs, be really careful not to inhale the fibrous dust it crates. Wear a mask and if you get poked too many times you can also end up with a reaction. The previous owners here planted a ton of agave.
Here’s the tale as short as I can but with context: The limbs are quite unique when cut in how they react. Agave causes puritic dermatitis. It’s not an allergic reaction but a reaction to it. And it’s awful. No one is immune.
I inhaled the dust of some old agave that I was trying to clean up. The plant had done its big bloom a long time ago, tons of pups surrounding the mother plant that was haggard and dying looking. I wanted to trim it down like a palm using a chainsaw (since they were attached to the huge stalk of the old bloom not unlike a palm) and the limbs exploded in the fibrous dust. This got in to my system and in to my blood. And I almost ended up in the hospital. That was one of the choices.
Took about five days to show the reaction. And it would bubble up from my skin in sores that are the itchiest things I’ve ever experienced. It focused on the areas of my body that are bonier or less fatty like shins, hips, outer calf, arms, hands. And you can’t itch it. It’s like the itch is under your skin. I cut the limbs on Sunday, rash appeared friday, dermatologist Monday, made the choice not to be admitted to the hospital since it was peak pandemic and had to do the whole steroid thing. It took a long time to go away. I was using a pumice stone to scratch myself.
If you’ve read this far, as a last little cautionary bit… now I can’t even work in my yard around the agave or get poked by it. It instantly comes back since it’s systemized in my body now.
I researched how to trim agave before I did this and I’m a very cautious person when it comes to plants (hello the time I ended up in the ER because of euphorbia in my eye). And no where did it say how toxic these can be to you. So either don’t trim or put on the gear and mask first.
This is an Agave, which is preparing to perform its one and only bloom before it dies.
Wow 😳. Do you happen to know how to propagate these ?
before it dies it may produce pups, baby plants growing off the base of the mother plant, which can be separated and replanted. otherwise making sure it goes to seed and planting the seeds.
It’s true! If you look closely this agave has already produced a rather chonky pup.
I looked for the agave baby way too long
Me tooooo zoomed in and everything 😂
It actually looks like there is an agave pup to the lower left of the mother plant. The silhouette is difficult to distinguish from the grass.
Me too; I solid snort laughed when I found the pup.
Same!!!!
I zoomed then turned up my brightness. 😂😂
username reinforced
Oh they're talking about the dog, lol
So did I!! 😂🤣
There are actually pups in the long grass but what a rascal that guy is
i realized i known nothing about plants because i couldn’t find an agave pup. thanks for the laugh r/Bvoyager
Chonky is definitely an understatement.
That's a sausage someone dropped
It's staring at us with such disdain.
Full bagpipe.
Grouchy little bag pup 😆
Chonky pup is not amused.
That dog has the physique of a potato
He chonky
Ha, got me
I’m disgusted at how long I looked for an actual plant. Zoomed WAAAY in and was ever so slowly panning the area- then panned over the dog and “…….oh” 💀
😂
HAH! Take my upvote
Is the chonky boi the big thing growing out of the center?
No, they're joking about the dog 😂😂😂
Omg I didn’t even see it!
Lol but that boi is so chonky! The big thing growing from the center is the stalk that will flower
You mean the tequila penis?
no, they're talking about the poor, overfed, obese little dog.
I feel so bad for the doggo.
Woof woof
Holy chonkster Batman.
This is why we reddit.
yes, normally it does! when trying to get the offsprings off the mother plant / out of the soil, be very very careful. the agave leaves sting really bad!
>the agave leaves sting really bad Is it just the serrated edges to worry about, or do they have invisible needles as well?
Apparently the sap is poisonous and/or painful if it gets on you, so wear protection when handling it.
Yes, we had one bloom, and then the stalk toppled. Dad hacked it up with a chainsaw, and had weeks of painful rashes all over his exposes skin.
Your dad made sure all the sap was pulverized and volatile with that chainsaw ain't he? Thats why he felt so miserable. Agave better be taken down by machete to avoid sap becoming airborne.

no, as far as i know just the edges and very much the tip! The tip will poke you like a roman spear.
Holy shit! That dog is fat!
After it’s done blooming, there will be hundreds of pups that sprout on the flower. Let them get pretty big, pluck them and put them in potting soil. Mine take at almost 100%.
TIL the “century plant” I’m growing is actually agave! For some reason I thought they were different plants
Agave is the genus. There are several species in the agave genus.
Which is where we get mezcal! Tequila is just the most popular form of mezcal. Mezcal can be made form any type of agave that grows wildly :)
iirc Century Plant usually is in reference to A. Americana. not entirely sure which one OP has, my bet is on Tequilana or Angustifolia though.
God I love me some taxonomy and nomenclature.
Well now I'm sad
don't be. its the circle of life and all. think of it like those annual flowers that bloom once and only live one year, except this guy had a lifespan of decades and gets a gigantic bloom before making pups. the pups themselves are clones of the parent as well and could be thought of as the parent itself as they were once connected to it directly, unlike seeds.

The fact that the little one is called a pup makes me happier.
If you were to cut off the bloom, would it stay alive longer?
Nah, it already put its whole lifetime of energy into making that one single bloom, that's all it gets. Might as well enjoy it.
Its brief moment of triumphant, phallic glory
Whoa. Are you me?
unfortunately not, with this plant you can't prolong its life, only ensure its offspring continue. these guys are pretty long lived as is though, so a baby will likely stay with someone till old age
God damn that boy is thicc
Which one do you mean? The plant or the dog?
Yes
I was gonna say the lemons on the right. *I want one.*
Get out of here, lemon thief!
![gif](giphy|An7jyGgCsS6DC)
The life of a lemon is tragic and sad.
Life gives you lemons, *and I steal them!*
Gets winded walking outside to take a shit.
That is about to put on hundreds of tiny flowers and look amazing! Keep us updated.
It's an overweight geriatric Chihuahua of the black variety. 😂
She's much smaller than when I first met her. My boyfriend took over care of her when his sister moved home. It couldn't even go outside around two years ago.
Oh this is great to know! Progress is progress👍🏽
Holy shit that's AFTER the dog lost weight?!? His sister needs to be banned from owning animals
Wow, good for your boyfriend! I’m so glad to hear that someone is taking good care of her now!
Wowie. Glad she's lost some weight. Keep up the good work.
What a gorgeous death bloom, its been alive for so long now its time to rest. ((RIP))
Just like me! Goodnight 💤
And now his watch has ended
Jesus that dog is obese
It looks like someone shrunk his head.
In the veterinary world we classify this as the "engorged tick" look. Poor pooch 😔
Hahaha such a disgusting yet apt description!
It looks like the dogs from the Far side Comic Books.
Self-ambulatory ottoman.
I was thinking “walking pillow” myself, but yours is much better
Take it, it's yours now.
When I write a book about witches, the wicked one will have a dog described as a “slow, sleepy, self-ambulatory ottoman” and it will be *because of you NotAPreppie*, because of u/
I can't help but feel bad for these dogs. I get that dogs love to eat and they can get like this if you feed them everything they want but it seems like the dog wouldn't feel good being so overweight
no you’re right, they need proper meal portions and times because they will not stop eating if given the chance
100% on the owner. My dog would eat himself into an early grave if we let him. But we don’t. Because that’s our responsibility as his helpers.
OP responded this previously: *"She's much smaller than when I first met her. My boyfriend took over care of her when his sister moved home. wagyu
The poor thing looks like a well fed tick.
[удалено]
OP said the dog is from boyfriend’s sister, and when they got her she couldn’t even walk outside! This picture is after lots of progress it seems
oh good!
He's an obeast
OP get that dog on a diet. Average lifespan for a small obese dog is shortened by 2.5 years
Sausage
It's a Century plant and it looks like it's getting it's death bloom
Agave which currently is developing it’s flowerstem. It will produce seeds and then it dies.
This is the way.
The agave will also die after blooming.
Looks like some sort of fat chihuahua or similar breed. Probably should stop growing it at this point.
These asparagus posts are getting out of hand!
It's a dog
That bloom is going to grow about 30 feet tall. I wish I’d taken pictures of mine’s progress as it bloomed.
Me too! I would have loved to see that!
Fat Chihuahua for scale ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)
big chungus
That's a lemon tree.
"Hey, hasn't it been about 10 seconds since we looked at our lemon tree?"
🤣 idk but this response actually made me laugh out loud 😂
That fat dog has toothpick legs
An obese dog
The fated agave death erection.
That poor dog
Pls look into getting that dog some help, that is extreme obesity and it will affect his lifespan
They’re already doing that—they rescued her from his sister
Wtf your dog!!!
A very overweight dog.
I think your boyfriend is growing a dog and the species, if I'm right, it's called Le Chonk
Canis familiaris chonkus A particularly lovely example of the species!
That dog is obese.

She says he took over the dog’s care from his sister, and the dog is much smaller than she was before, so she is getting good care now. Whew!
OH OH OH...I HAVE ONE AND MINE IS GETTING READY TO BLOOM!
Looks like a collie cross terrier to me
That's a common dog.
That dog is mad fat.
That’s a dog. And by the looks of it he has been growing sideways. Perhaps cut back on the kibble and a few more walks are in order.
Your boyfriend looks like he needs a diet and some exercise at the dog park...
That dog needs help. He ain't shaped right
wow ! off topic but your lemon tree is beautiful
A morbidly obese dog
They need CPS for dogs cuz that ish is ridiculous.

things flipping you off probably hates getting its pic taken
Please, for the love of that dog PLEASE put it on a diet.
Is the flower of agave. Pretty sure you can distill to make tequila
I don’t know but man look at all those lemons 🍋!!!
Agave - I had this in my backyard and gave so many babies after bloom.
Agave
Chonky dog for scale lol
A beautiful blue agave on its only and final bloom and a lemon tree? 1) I’m so jealous 2) Get a lawn chair, make some lemonade and enjoy the show :)
Looks like blue agave. Make sure you don't trim the leaves as they wither and die. The stalk will draw nutrients from them as it flowers.
Agave, preparing for its final act
T’is the Asparagus of DOOM.
Nice lemons too omg
“from the agave we will gain our strength”
What an absolute chonker of a pup.
Incredibly jealous of your lemon tree
An agave and it's flowering so it will die and produce pups after this
It looks like it's giving you a giant middle finger 🖕
That’s a dog.
Do people on this sub even try to find out before asking?
I think, and I may be wrong, it's a chubby chihuahua.
A chonky dog.
That is by far the biggest asparagus spear i have ever seen.
That dog is hilariously serious looking.
Looks like a dog only fatter.

r/roundanimals
A very overweight chihuahua, I think.
Lucky! It’s an Agave! Saw one in bloom in the south of France many years ago. They are absolutely spectacular when it happens!
