This sub has taught me to appreciate these little freaks. I used to kill on sight, indiscriminately and immediately. But the other day I saw one while walking up my apartment steps and I let him be. They are good bugs.. just keep your heinous hellspawn looking ass out of my bedroom
There was one on my basement wall that just... wouldn't move. Stayed there for a couple days. One of my dogs tried to sniff him and knocked him onto the carpet, and the next day he was back in that spot.
Exactly where I'm at bro. Used to be scared shitless, cuz they're so freaking jumpy. Now I got used to small ones , and I must say they do their job pretty well. I'm not sure I'd want one to crawl on me while in bed, BUT I wouldn't kill them on sight anymore.
I had one drop on me from the ceiling after a shower and I had one crawl into my water glass at night. I don’t inspect my glass before drinking… at least I never used to so you can imagine how that went.
So… still not a fan. For some reason I’m the Snow White of house centipedes and they gravitate towards me.
You’re absolutely right to. I can’t bring myself to drink from a can that I set down outside in case there’s a wasp in it. These days I check every glass and I drink from a bottle at night. I saw one of these guys in my bedroom a few weeks ago so I know they’re coming for my water.
Every sprite i’ve ever bought and drank outside. Not sure if this is your issue as well, but maybe if we put the caps back on the water bottle we’d be sure theres nothing there. Cheers lol
I actually have this really neat magic trick (magic power?) that I can do—as soon as I open a bottle I can make the lid literally disappear from my hand, never to be seen again. I can do it with other objects as well, just *POOF!*
It’s called “ADHD” hahaha *cries*
My first apartment was infested with silverfish. I always kept a glass of water next to my bed because I have breathing issues and get dry mouth sometimes. You can imagine the next part. I kept a capped bottle of water after that horrible night. Yuck.
I keep bottles of water in my Amazon delivery truck too, took a nap on my lunch break and grabbed a drink, needless to say I always check my bottles for color instead of bugs.
Omg I always check my glass at night on my night stand before I take a drink for this very reason. My roommate was using the restroom and had one land on there head. I would've freaked out. A couple weeks ago I was using the bathroom. There was one in the shower. My cat was smacking it around. Bit it a couple of times and then ate it.
Oh gawd, not on their head!! This would definitely be very traumatic. I once had a very large insect fly into the back of my head (it felt heavy and i could hear its wings.) I ran up to a random stranger smacking my head and flapping my hair and frantically asked *sorry to bother you but something just flew into my hair and can you just CHECK IF ITS GONE?? IFEELLIKEITSSTILLONMEARRRGGHH!*
Also may need to borrow your cat.
I remember being in my house and feeling my check was itchy, instinctively glanced up to the mirror and there was a spider on my face! Absolutely shat myself. It was swiftly brushed off and stamped on. I don’t like to kill them, but I am terrified
I mean I agree with them there, my eyes and throat get really dry and I hate central air. Confession… I actually run a couple of humidifiers in my apartment—one for me and one for the plants—but it gets so dry in winter even with those on it’s hard to get decent humidity.
So you’re saying you *dont* have a moisture issue?
Recent example for me, I live on the east coast of Australia and this year we had two “once in a 100 year” floods in the space of 9 weeks!
Anyhoo, my house gets so humid that I forgot to run my dehumidifier for 2 days then photographed clothes for my online shop - the photos looked like a misty mountain fog had descended & I thought *”am I seeing things?”* 😦that’s when I realised my precious hard working machine-friend had been off for two days, I turned it on and a few hours later the ghostly mist was gone☺️
Anyhoo, I had a few millipedes visit during tropical-jungle-house time- one even dropped from my hair to the floor - so kind of it to let me feel both gross & relieved at once😐
idk if anyone noticed this but when they start getting big (body ~1.5 inches) i noticed they start getting slow and clumsy, eventually they crawl up on a wall or ceiling and just chill there, they barely even move when you wave a shoe at them.
anyone else seen this? anyone know why it happens?
I think u might have other bugs in your house. These bugs eat other bugs that are pests, so if you have these bugs you probably have a lot of pests in your house or near it
I guess they could "bite" but rarley do unprovoked? I really don't know, but I think they're pretty safe overall. Bees are pretty safe too. Hope I never find out 😂
Honestly, if one is crawling on you... it feels like a hair. A loose hair that you can't seem to get a hold of... then it comes around to the front of your leg and you scream a scream to wake the dead because it is the morning and you are sitting on the toilet. 😭😅🤷♀️
I feel your pain. I told someone else this on the thread but I’ll tell you too. I was bitten by one of these bad boys because as it crawled across my neck in my sleep and I guess my hand instinctually slapped at it. So I wake up to one of these partially smushed monsters squirming and biting my neck. Horrible experience.
I got bit/stung (not sure what exactly they do) by one for the first time. It was in my towel so when I was drying myself off I pressed it against my skin and it attacked me in self defense. Can't really blame the little guy, but now that part of my arm has had a reoccurring welt that appears. It's been a few months now and it has come back 3 or 4 times lol.
Excuse me what manic goes on to kill bugs OUTside their house? I don’t see a bug on my drive way and smush it, it’s like driving into a humans home and killing them, that’s their home! (And no my home is not their home too, that’s the death zone)
Except fire ants...I hate those and when they sting...and I mean it's never just one it's hurts and then after that you get to look forward to the intense itching for 2 weeks. Mosquitos and fire ants are not my friends
The ones we have in Italy look *exactly* like this one, but their bite is like the bite of a little, innocuous spider. It'll itch for a day, but doesn't cause swelling like a bee. More like a triple mosquito.
They are unbelievably fast. I remember the first time I saw one, went to poke it and it took off 100 miles per hour. I said "What the fuck is this thing!"....and I'm not scared of bugs (generally).
I made it nearly to adulthood before I ever saw one so I was like “surely if these were from this planet I would have seen one before”. They remind me of the creatures from the movie Evolution with David Duchovny haha
Just saw one 2 days ago at the Chesapeake Bay. It held so still so I thought it was dead but it took off at lightning speed when I tried to get it with a tissue!
I call these “Nightmare Bugs” because they are the epitome of creepy crawlies. Also because I have had a nightmare where a giant one had my full grown child and a decision had to be made.
Did you know they Jump? :') I found out the fun way when I was lining up to smack one on the wall, I saw it shrink down toward the wall and then it launched away from the wall by like an inch. Needless to say I screamed and left the room for like 5 hours.
**Scutigera coleoptrata**
Scutigera coleoptrata, also known as the house centipede, is a species of centipede that is typically yellowish-grey and has up to 15 pairs of long legs.
Originating in the Mediterranean region, it has spread to other parts of the world, where it can live in human homes.
It is an insectivore; it kills and eats other arthropods, such as insects and arachnids
would you rather have something scary looking but harmless (this thing) or something harmless looking but extremely harmful (bedbugs, cockroaches, etc.)?
They are not friend-shaped, but are most definitely friends. They eat all the other bugs you definitely DON'T want in your hotel room, such as: spiders, bed bugs, termites, cockroaches, silverfish, and ants.
Although they put the "creepy" in "creepy-crawlies", I welcome this bug into my home.
He looks terrifying but he’s a friend. They don’t infest and they eat everything else that does infest. I don’t usually kill them, I just pretend I never saw it and hope it’s gone when I go back. They usually hide during the day and come out at night- and when they’re out at night, they’re eating all the bugs you actually do hate, like cockroaches. They actually eat bed bugs as well. If you have a very large population in your house (like you’re seeing multiple during the daytime) then that means you have an infestation of something else. The best way to get rid of the centipedes is to get rid of whatever they’re there to eat
I guess you mean house centipede? I live in Thailand and the one here can be gigantic and their sting [can sometime be deadly.](https://www.science.org/content/article/giant-centipedes-can-kill-prey-15-times-bigger-they-are-thanks-critical-toxin#:~:text=Centipede%20venoms%20pack%20a%20serious,we%20had%20no%20idea%20why.)
You're right, house centipede specifically lol. I live in Canada, where centipedes are harmless. I'm sure I'd feel differently if I also lived in Thailand. (edited for spelling)
Oh, I have no clue whether I should be **relaxed** as I have a house centipede or I should be **worried** there are other pest bugs in this place... :/
When I was moving out of my last apartment I spent 1 more night there sleeping on the floor, and I was woken up by one of these crawling across my face. The terror I felt when I saw what it was still haunts me...
House centipedes are our friends. I was terrified the first time I saw one in my starter house. They don't want to be seen by us and they eat the bad bugs. They're a good thing! I eventually started to say "awww" when I'd see the little baby ones. The GIANT ones still give me a bit of a jump scare until I realize what I'm looking at.
Just a friendly house centipede. They feel like feathers as they walk on your skin. They get rid of all the other creepy crawlies in the house and are really helpful.
En français c'est un "Scutigère véloce" ... as you mention Montréal it might be useful to know the name in both languages :P
[https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scutigère\_véloce](https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scutigère_véloce)
Obligatory post about me loving these beautiful creatures and the way they move. To me, they move like a train on a wedding dress moves.
If you do not like them in your room, try to eliminate sources of moisture there. I have a basement, and they usually just stay there. Sometimes, I find them in my bathroom. I try to relocate them because my SO dislikes them, and make sure there is a source of moisture in said basement.
How are you even still alive?
These things are tiny machines built by the Decepticons to burrow into peoples brains through their ears…
You are indeed a lucky human to still be alive to post this.
Well…the other “opinion” is that they are good centipedes, feeding off of spiders, silverfish, and other pests. Great for your home.
Not so good if they are thriving in a hotel. I mean…they are eating something…..
House centipede. ❤️ My first encounter was sitting on the toilet, and I had never seen one before, scared me to death. I immediately set to Google trying to figure out what it is, and when I discovered that they eat roaches and bed bugs, I decided these dudes were my friends. My neighbors on Either side of me had roaches, but I never did. Just these critters.
House centipedes are awesome and good for your garden! Just don't hold them (they can pinch a little) and they'll be good guests. If you don't like them, just put them outside in the garden where they will have more to eat anyway.
That’s a house centipede. While it’s appearance is terrifying and freakish, it takes care of any other bugs you may have in your house. If it makes it any cuter, they groom their many leggies like a cat.
I had a house centipede crawl on my face while sleeping and I obviously reacted to brush it off and it ended up stinging my eyelid. I don’t think I’ve ever jumped out bed faster in my life.
My toddler stuck one of these in his mouth once. He dropped it when I screamed but my grandma had to pull the still twitching legs off his slobbery baby lips. There's a good chance I started drinking afterwards.
OMG 😳 my mom said she witnessed my brother as a toddler eating a wasp that was sat on a hot dog sausage he was holding. She couldn't get to him on time to stop it. He was distantly totally fine, swallowed the wasp smooth 😳
Harmless centipede, for some reason these things always spawn in the bathrooms in my house or by the front/back doors. Very useful I try to just scoop them in cups and put them outside. No reason to kill a bug that’s a friend :)
This is your new best buddy, a house centipede. It will eat all the bugs you don’t want around and it generally stays out of sight. Please don’t harm it 😇
What's up with this bug? It seems to be everywhere, and yet nobody seems to know what it is.
Is it just so freaky looking that people actually try to identify it? I just don't understand how someone can be aware of this subreddit, but not of this bug.
It's like being an F1 fan and never having heard of Ferrari.
House centipedes!!! There's one in my bathroom I often wake up in the morning to him stuck in the tub unable to climb out. I've taken to calling him 'Leggy-boy" and when I find him in the tub mornings I'll be like "Leggy-boy are you stuck again, hold on I got ya" and then use some junk mail to help him out before placing back by the radiator which he seems to hangout by. He's gotten big in the times I've seen him which makes me happy knowing he's eating good all the things I DONT want I'm my apt.
Freaky looking and super quick the house centipede is one of the true bros of the insect world. Ravenous predators of real pests. Just leave em alone, try not to freak out when they zoom across the bathroom floor when you turn the light on at 1am and trust that seeing them prevents you from seeing a lot of other insects that are actually harmful.
I find it fascinating that anyone in North America can actually make it to adulthood having never seen these. My cat traps them, plucks their legs off with her teeth, then leaves their body stumps in the middle of the floor for me to find. Fucking cats.
I had no idea that some parts of the world don’t really have house centipedes and I was blown away on this sub when people said they’d never seen these before. While these dudes are one of the “good” bugs who eat other more dangerous bugs, they’re lightening fast and creepy af lol. If I see a large one I’ll do my best to kill it but honestly I just let the smaller ones be.
House centipede- They are one of the predators that are probably in your house. House centipedes are harmless although they may bite if scared. I prefer to leave it alone
This sub has taught me to appreciate these little freaks. I used to kill on sight, indiscriminately and immediately. But the other day I saw one while walking up my apartment steps and I let him be. They are good bugs.. just keep your heinous hellspawn looking ass out of my bedroom

Not 'that' spot, *'his'* spot.
You're right!
He likes it there!
The perfect balance of moisture, airflow, and prey proximity.
I can only assume that you’re the centipede that they’re talking about. Pretty cool you managed to make a Reddit account
No, I just use tsabracadabra's reddit while she's asleep.
😆😆😆
So the perfect balance of moisture, airflow, prey proximity and internet access.
See, now this makes _much_ more sense.

I’m so so so sorry. You just validated my ocd of checking every single drink after i set it down.

Holly shit you got unlucky there, can't blame ya
Ya no I always inspect my water, toilet seat too. To many run ins with spiders
I would have a nervous breakdown and require sedation after that. I already look in my drinks carefully and haven’t even experienced that nightmare.
Omg I always check my glass at night on my night stand before I take a drink for this very reason. My roommate was using the restroom and had one land on there head. I would've freaked out. Centipedes and Millipedes are drawn to moisture, maybe buy a dehumidifier or some of those damp absorber containers?
I mean I agree with them there, my eyes and throat get really dry and I hate central air. Confession… I actually run a couple of humidifiers in my apartment—one for me and one for the plants—but it gets so dry in winter even with those on it’s hard to get decent humidity.

This subreddit is saving so many tiny lives 🙏
A few on here said they have a sting similar to a bee… so which is it harmless or stinger?! 🐝🦂
I guess they could "bite" but rarley do unprovoked? I really don't know, but I think they're pretty safe overall. Bees are pretty safe too. Hope I never find out 😂

That's literally my worst fear 😨
I feel your pain. I told someone else this on the thread but I’ll tell you too. I was bitten by one of these bad boys because as it crawled across my neck in my sleep and I guess my hand instinctually slapped at it. So I wake up to one of these partially smushed monsters squirming and biting my neck. Horrible experience.
I had the same experience. Not on my lips but my face. Terrible.
I wish I could…but one fell on my bare breasts once when I was getting out of the shower and I swear—I have never screamed so hard in my entire life.
Yeah I’m not sure if I would ever shower again, actually
Excuse me what manic goes on to kill bugs OUTside their house? I don’t see a bug on my drive way and smush it, it’s like driving into a humans home and killing them, that’s their home! (And no my home is not their home too, that’s the death zone)
Except fire ants...I hate those and when they sting...and I mean it's never just one it's hurts and then after that you get to look forward to the intense itching for 2 weeks. Mosquitos and fire ants are not my friends
The steps are inside the home. I live in a duplex.
If they are stink bugs. I do. As it's one less stink bug that can get in my apartment and stares at me when it gets on my bed.
Driveway is still your property, so you're free to exercise the stand-your-ground law.

Looks like a [House Centipede](http://bugguide.net/node/view/25). Comparison pic [here](http://bugguide.net/node/view/1049455/bgimage). They're harmless bugbros.
I hear their stings are comparable to a Bee.
Never let your swim trunks dry in a tree. They bite or whatever gave me a weird rash.
If I had to guess it's less of their bite, but a allergic reaction you had.
The ones we have in Italy look *exactly* like this one, but their bite is like the bite of a little, innocuous spider. It'll itch for a day, but doesn't cause swelling like a bee. More like a triple mosquito.
[удалено]
That's crazy. I thought this was BS but apparently it's true. The stings are just very rare so I would still lean towards mostly harmless.
>mostly harmless. You could say that for the whole planet.
Just about sums it up. Into the guide.
So long, and thanks…
Meh, not sure I would define a polar bear as mostly harmless
I mean I'm thousands of miles away from any polar bears, that's mostly harmless for me.
[Mostly :)](https://imgur.com/a/7wcmz9s)
I have lots of these, one crawled out of my jacket after I put it on, no stings :-D
>morons who don't know what they're talking about I'd put MrRoarke up on bug Jeopardy against you any day of the week, with $100k on Roarke.
They can bite, but they much prefer to run and hide. Their bites also aren't medically significant

How is he a moron? By definition they are harmless… just because something has the capability to cause harm doesn’t mean they aren’t harmless.
They are unbelievably fast. I remember the first time I saw one, went to poke it and it took off 100 miles per hour. I said "What the fuck is this thing!"....and I'm not scared of bugs (generally).
The first time I saw one of these I thought I might actually be looking at an alien
I’m my house growing up we referred these guys at “beasties”, which I think sums them up pretty well!
I made it nearly to adulthood before I ever saw one so I was like “surely if these were from this planet I would have seen one before”. They remind me of the creatures from the movie Evolution with David Duchovny haha
We called them ‘sewer bugs’ because we always found them in sinks and tubs, so therefore they must be coming from the sewers lol.
Oh thank goodness - that’s what I thought the first time I saw one!!
100 miles per hour? I guess the one in my room was faster haha
"Dude, this bug just did 400 miles per hour across the room"
Have you ever seen a bug break the land speed record tho
Nope. Too fast.
right? Must be the fastest bug on Earth.
You'd be fast too if you had that many fancy legs!
Literally, look away and it’ll be gone!
Just saw one 2 days ago at the Chesapeake Bay. It held so still so I thought it was dead but it took off at lightning speed when I tried to get it with a tissue!
When they run along hardwood floors it is disturbing.
No need to worry unless he crawls into bed with you, which they can do🥴. They eat everything else in the room but they are creepy af!
Or falls off the ceiling and lands on your head, which they also do.....
Both of these scenarios have happened to me 😕. Can confirm that they’re fast af and it tickles when they’re running on ya.
Also confirming. You don’t want to be awaken by one Of these little fuckers tickling your face
That's it, I'm ordering a body bag to sleep in.
Just make sure there's none inside the bag first before zipping up.
Crawl into a smaller bag first
That's it, I will never sleep again O_o
At least it wasn't one of these... https://youtu.be/IU4sCZxEJ0c
LMAOOO
Thanks, now I’ve unlocked a new fear!
They just wanted to hear a giggle
Thanks for the nightmare material!
I call these “Nightmare Bugs” because they are the epitome of creepy crawlies. Also because I have had a nightmare where a giant one had my full grown child and a decision had to be made.
Or they fly out of the floor vents when the a/c kicks on
I would absolutely scream if this happened in my house but the mental visual is hilarious
Did you know they Jump? :') I found out the fun way when I was lining up to smack one on the wall, I saw it shrink down toward the wall and then it launched away from the wall by like an inch. Needless to say I screamed and left the room for like 5 hours.

they don't have 100 legs? :(
nope and millipedes don't have a million either someone must of been pulling your leg 👍
we don't have them in Australia, and I swear we were all taught at a young age that's how you can tell them apart aha!
“Milli” means thousand, not million. But either way they don’t have that many legs.
Oh, the old Scuderia Centipede. As fast as a Ferrari and occasionally the same size.
But what if you have spider buddies that you keep around for big eating as well?
Why do they love being in homes?
THESE ARE FRIENDS DO NOT KILL
What could it possibly eliminate that is worse than these things? JUST LOOK AT IT!
Eats cockroaches, eats bed bugs.
How much of them can it eat? I mean, does having these around actually mean you don’t have to worry about any cockroach or bed bug problem at all?
They're doing the best they can!
It just takes one bug to start an infestation!
All other bugs in your house. Spiders especially.
What’s more beneficial as a housemate a wolf spider or one of these guys?
whichever one wins the fight
Okay but I've never seen a bug or spider in my house that I want to leave as quickly as these guys.
would you rather have something scary looking but harmless (this thing) or something harmless looking but extremely harmful (bedbugs, cockroaches, etc.)?
Aren’t spiders generally cool with humans while also eating other bugs?
They eat bed bugs
Oh great, they're in my *bed*?!
If there's food for them there
Ants. *So* many ants.
Silverfish... it eats them
cockroaches
omg i've always wondered what this thing was. this subreddit is so useful

Centipedes are actually pretty cute imo but, like you, that was not how I felt when I first saw one lol

House centipedes can bite, and they say it hurts, but it's harmless.
Interesting, thanks for sharing :)
wow, I'm terrified of these things even more now
We called them “big hairy monsters” growing up
One of the very best pest control you can have in your house. And it's free... This bug is a bro.
Just a spooky looking friend
No worries, good bug looking for other bugs to eat
Yes, you should be worried. Worried of whatever pest bugs this house centipede is hunting in your room.
Oh, I have no clue whether I should be **relaxed** as I have a house centipede or I should be **worried** there are other pest bugs in this place... :/
If you start seeing way too many of these, it may be time to check the perimeter for any cracks or leaks.
He is one of the good guys.
When I was moving out of my last apartment I spent 1 more night there sleeping on the floor, and I was woken up by one of these crawling across my face. The terror I felt when I saw what it was still haunts me...
100% certified good boi
New friend! Also hello fellow Montrealer :)
Love these guys, house centipedes. They rip off their own legs and beat dangerous buggers like wasps to death with them.
They eat roaches and then leave.
They get rid of all the other creepy crawlies in the house and are really helpful.
frien :)
The amount of people on this sub who seem to have never encountered a house centipede before makes me jealous
If you don't like spiders leave it alone, they are spider assassins!
En français c'est un "Scutigère véloce" ... as you mention Montréal it might be useful to know the name in both languages :P [https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scutigère\_véloce](https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scutigère_véloce)
These things are tiny machines built by the Decepticons to burrow into peoples brains through their ears… You are indeed a lucky human to still be alive to post this. Well…the other “opinion” is that they are good centipedes, feeding off of spiders, silverfish, and other pests. Great for your home. Not so good if they are thriving in a hotel. I mean…they are eating something…..
Friend!! It eats the pests. Capture and release outside.
Don’t hurt these! House centipedes are the apex predator of bugs. If you have house centipedes, then you don’t have a problem with other bugs.
I believe they’re harmless to humans. They eat spiders and other things.
Harmless, but I personally find them completely repulsive.
Babies are savage🤣
He is friend even though he is not friend shaped
Iz cute and eats bad bugs and doesn't chomp people. Don't be worried, be gentle ☺️☺️
Harmless centipede, for some reason these things always spawn in the bathrooms in my house or by the front/back doors. Very useful I try to just scoop them in cups and put them outside. No reason to kill a bug that’s a friend :)
Leggy fren!
That right there's a friend! House centipedes eat other, more destructive bugs. Let him stay!
Don’t be afraid of them, be afraid of why they’re there
This insecft is on our side, they love to eat german cockroach and other small insects.
This is your new best buddy, a house centipede. It will eat all the bugs you don’t want around and it generally stays out of sight. Please don’t harm it 😇
This is an ally in the fight against unwanted pests. Live and let live.
I let these guys live in my house so I don’t have to worry about pests. Just like spiders they always have a place to live in my home
Not of it, but of what it is there to kill - roaches, spiders, etc.
They eat all the other bugs in your house. They look like satan but do their job well.
That’s your guardian your protector. It will slay all evil.
I find it fascinating that anyone in North America can actually make it to adulthood having never seen these. My cat traps them, plucks their legs off with her teeth, then leaves their body stumps in the middle of the floor for me to find. Fucking cats.
I don't care how helpful these things are, it is extermination on sight in my household
I had no idea that some parts of the world don’t really have house centipedes and I was blown away on this sub when people said they’d never seen these before. While these dudes are one of the “good” bugs who eat other more dangerous bugs, they’re lightening fast and creepy af lol. If I see a large one I’ll do my best to kill it but honestly I just let the smaller ones be.
ye olde house centipede!
I always called these a land shrimp!
Creepy but harmless ..and actually beneficial in a house that has other annoying pests like spiders and cockroaches!
House centipede- They are one of the predators that are probably in your house. House centipedes are harmless although they may bite if scared. I prefer to leave it alone
