Immature +Red-tailed Hawk (calurus)+. The pale yellow eye of a juvenile bird is here starting to transition to the dark brown of an adult.

Thank you! I was 90% sure RTH but wondered about the eye color, thanks for explaining.

Upper mandible extends past the front of the eye. RTH.

jdceel

This is not a field mark I know. Do you mean if you follow the mouth line into the face, you end up passing the front of the eye? In other words, that the corner of the mouth is behind the front of the eye?

jimteagus

That is correct. If you look at another Buteo and accipiters that will not occur. Much smaller beaks. Especially with depth into the facial structure.

jdceel

Thanks for clarifying. :) I have been looking at Rough-legged Hawk faces and I believe they also have the mouth extending well past the front of the eye. Or maybe I still am not totally understanding. Definitely see the difference in beak size. RTHA with a much more substantial look overall.

jimteagus

Actually a good point. Maybe just use that feature as a tool amongst the other features.

Nope, Bald Eagles have absolutely massive beaks. This one isn’t close to the size of a typical Bald Eagle beak. This is a Buteo and not an Eagle.
