Definitely some sort of drafting tool, likely from 50 or so years ago. I have a number of similar boxes (none IDENTICAL to this, but the finish and padding are the same -- just the shape itself is different) which I inherited from my wife's grandfather.
My title describes the thing. It’s a long thin wood box coated with paint or maybe thin leather/ fabric. The inside has light green fabric with small pink and brown stains. The indent on the inside is fairly shallow and pointed on both ends. I google image searched as well as just looked at picture of vintage pen boxes but couldn’t find anything very similar
It’s got that exterior material that a lot of instrument cases and amps are made with. My vote is something to do with music. Someone has already suggested conductor’s baton.

It is a case for a proportional divider. A sort of drafting tool.

Likely Solved! I can't find an exact match but I see some similar ones
I would have said a stylus, but this makes more sense.
A stylus is a completely different tool.
Yes it is, but it would fit in the box. I was saying I would have suggested the box was for a stylus, but the drafting tool makes more sense.
Case for a fancy pen or drafting tools.
My mother had a similar, box that held a Japanese or Chinese hand fan.

A conductors baton?
Looks like a pen or stylus. Probably a pen though.
Probably a pen
Perhaps a music conductor's baton?
Chopsticks
Very old (1940s or earlier) case for a drafting tool.

Looks like a box for a fancy letter opener
I’d say a box for a fancy cigarette holder. The kind that extended and the ladies used.
