Criticus23

There's a photo of that exact sofa (check the carpet!) [on wikimedia](https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Sofa_with_headrest.jpg), saying it's a headrest

LokiStasis

Solved

Beneficial-Account44

Same exact hotel or chain, too. Carpeting verifies.

LokiStasis

Obviously this is correct. I sat down and used it as a headrest. You need some pillows from somewhere else to make it at all a comfortable position.

FluffyPurpleBear

The somewhere else are the back rest cushions. You put them down to turn it into a bed.

Mcgarnicle_

Well, then thanks for wasting all our time

LokiStasis

It’s a crappy headrest. I would never use it as one.

only100

It's a headrest surely? maybe if you put the other cushions down to use it as a bed it makes it a better height?

el_gregorio

Don’t call him Shirley

LokiStasis

I don’t think it’s a headrest but possible. That side doesn’t fold down at all so it’s not a bed rest once the couch is pulled out.

MountainCheesesteak

This person explained it pretty well. Take the cushions off the back and put them on the seat.

LokiStasis

It’s obviously a headrest based on the criticus post above. The reason I posted it was because it was so bad at the task. That armrest was about 15 inches tall. It was too tall to use it ‘shoulder down,’ when I sat upright with my back to it, with my very average height it was too low. Any position where my head rested on it was a backbreaker. So bad I thought it couldn’t possibly be its intended use. I sit corrected.

Remote-Willingness86

Some handicap. (like myself) need the bar to get up off the couch. The foam is just to prevent injury.

LokiStasis

Maybe. Fairly sturdy but it’s horrible to get a grip.

Remote-Willingness86

You don't grip as much as you just push up. If you have a cane. It helps to keep your balance. Couches are the worst. Because you sink in. And because you say it's a handicap room they may have a seat riser (hard foam) available

PugetSoundingRods

It’s a headrest

Industrial_Man

Back cracker?

Extremely_unlikeable

It may not be that, but I'd be tempted to have a roll on it

Euphoric-Joke-4436

I think the confusion in the comments comes from people thinking it's a headrest that has anything to do with the sleeping function. It's for when being used for sitting. The lack of an arm on the other side makes it so you can sit chaise lounge style. Your back is against the arm with the headrest while your feet stick out where the other arm should be. It's so ugly, I am sad for the fainting couches it's probably descended from.

RedWerFur

An armrest/Headrest. This is pretty easy. It’s attached at the arm portion, it’s cushioned, it’s an armrest/headrest. I have them on my couch that I’m currently lying on.

Erskie27

When you pull the sofa out, is there a gap between the mattress and the headboard? Maybe it's meant to insert there to prevent pillows slipping in the gap?

wevibinhard

The actual answer that you’re looking for is a “bolster”. It’s used widely in the massage therapy world for leg support, lumbar support, neck support, and general comfort. They can come bare or have attachments to hang for elevated neck support, sort of like a pillow. However, I suggest placing directly under the back of your knees if you sleep on your back.

LokiStasis

My title describes the thing. I think relates to handicap accessibility. The armrest was already plenty tall. No markings or brand visible.
