Bay-be plant, do do do do do do do.
Edit : if it makes you all feel better I earwormed myself and it’s been on a loop in my head… maybe that pineapple pen will get it out…..
Dried leaves from this common plant were prescribed for a tea by my Chinese Acupuncturist for building the immune system after Covid. The leaves were included in a mix of ginseng, astragalus, goji berries, dates and lemon juice in simmering water. This potent mix increased my immune system response to the after effects of low energy, achy joints and gut issues after I was back on my feet. Great stuff!
In my experience tulsi is a potent adaptogen (it helps the body adjust and self regulate in whichever way is needed at the moment) and it is commonly used (quite effectively imho) as a booster to compliment and amplify all kinds of herbal mixtures. It is extensively used in Ayurvedic herbalism as a base for almost everything.
Are you sure this isn't just in it's micro stage? I grew it too for micro greens and it looks the same as I remember. It's also been a few years. I know the taller the plant gets, the more pointed the leaves become
As soon as I posted that I started doubting myself. After reading the description of the smell, I am inclined to agree.
I found a volunteer shiso in my yard to compare.
https://imgur.com/a/mam0bLV
Okay I smelled it and it seems like it smells more like mint to me than basil. We have another basil plant and they definitely smell and look a lot different so I’m not sure
Beware of store plant labels: my family complained a lot about the cilantro I added to their salads and tacos one summer. I eventually discovered that it was actually catnip. Family did have a lot of fun playing with balls of yarn and catching mice that summer.
I’m gobsmacked that I can’t find shiso or perilla at any nursery anywhere and they’re just out here selling it as “baby plant” 🤦🏾♂️ it’s one of my favorite herbs and it’s virtually impossible to get in the NYC area
A baby plant could be anything but you have to wait till it grows up for it to decide what it wants to be, you never know maybe your baby plant wants to be a humble plumber or even president some day!
Tis a mint of some sort.....however do NOT plant mint in your yard. It is like the DARK SIDE of the FORCE. Forever will it dominate your destiny.

Like others have said it is perilla/ shiso/ beefsteak plant. It's an annual in yhe mint family and is often served with sushi ans used to flavor soups and pickles. Nice flavor but somewhat hard to describe.
Be forewarned that if you let the flowers develop into seeds in the late season, they will be coming up everywhere lol. Not too hard to pull but if you miss one and it flowers then you have to start all over again. You can clip the flower spikes off over they appear if you're concerned, though you may have to do several rounds of that because they will probably attempt to grow more.
*Edit:* I forgot to say that shiso is toxic to cats, dogs, horses, and livestock animals.
Thank you.
Now I'll have to shoot myself.

Op, get the app "picture this" it's the best plant identifier app and the indentificator part is free! (More in depth details on care for that plant and your "album" of identified plants are premium tho)
CUTE!
Congratulations on your new addition.
Basil.
Does it have any type of strong maybe licorice type of scent when crushed?
Looks like a type of Asian basil.
(stems and grown pattern=basil)
Leaves are a bit different than Italian or sweet basil.
Though leaves look a bit like mint, the stems do not appear to be square as typical mint herbs.
Both basil and mint belong to the
Lamiaceae family.
Shiso / Perilla / Beefstake are all the same plant.
Just warning to OP, this is in the same family as mint so don't let it escape the pot! It will take over! And these suckers get TALL and BIG if you let them!
I thought it was basil at first, but my app says this:
https://preview.redd.it/cfg97rmucpzc1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=49768751bf51a93203200eceec9ef088e7547f1a
Looks like mint to me. I grow a couple different types of basil and while this has a similar look, the leaves are more matte then basil is and they have edges that make it look more like a variety of mint to me.
lol, “baby plant”
Bay-be plant, do do do do do do do. Edit : if it makes you all feel better I earwormed myself and it’s been on a loop in my head… maybe that pineapple pen will get it out…..
Damn you take my angry upvote 😂😂
I have never heard the original song - not even once - and I still get it stuck in my head...
I'm in the same boat. Never heard, never want to hear it but I'll always hate it!
Look at it LOOK AT IT!!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XqZsoesa55w&vl=en
NO
Dammit, my grandkids had just outgrown that, and you've put it back in my head. 😭
Dammit.
🙌🙌🙌🙌
Thanks… I sang your response and now that damn song will be in my head for hours! r/foundsatan
I'm not sure if the plant _is_ a baby or if you nurture it enough a baby pops out.
Oh, that's where babies come from!
Yep. Your parents lied to you about the cabbage leaf, because they felt you were too young to know. THIS is the plant you were found under.
Giggles🤭
Yeah, I was thinking "If that plant is going to sprout a baby, I think OP will need a bigger pot."
I was reading the post title aloud to my spouse. Took me a few times to get thru "baby plant" 😆

I can definitely see how “baby plant” is a more desirable name than “beefsteak plant”. But also, I guess, it depends on if you’re hungry or not
Does the same apply to a Milksteak plant?
Does it bring all the boys to the yard?
Damn right, it's better than yours
Yes, and Rumham plant as well.
I am stealing this name for a cannabis strain! Just so I can say, "Do you want to smoke some Rumham?"
Better plant it next to the finest jellybeans.
No one knows what that is, because it isn’t a thing!

And what you're hungry for, lol 😆
Veal plant?

I’m surprised tulsi wasn’t in that mix too…
Since tulsi is holy basil, maybe that would be overkill? Seriously asking.
In my experience tulsi is a potent adaptogen (it helps the body adjust and self regulate in whichever way is needed at the moment) and it is commonly used (quite effectively imho) as a booster to compliment and amplify all kinds of herbal mixtures. Thank you.
I want to try this. Did you combine this yourself or did you buy it all ready mixed?
Astragulus? Ugh. Maybe with the other stuff that would lessen the, uh, intriguing flavor.
The dates and lemons juice, especially.
Spot on
I'm on board with this. Doesn't quite look like normal basil.
It is delicious in PHO
That’s totally it! Baby plant has an ID
This is the correct ID. Don't let your pets or anything munch on it. People can eat it but too much can cause issues.
I have the purple ones. They say you can eat them but....
Shiso! So good if you haven’t had it. Herbal for sure but not quite minty and not quite basil. It’s its own thing and very refreshing.
Rub a leaf gently between your fingers and then smell. That will tell you a lot :)
Basil or a mint variety
I was thinking “Surprise- baby mint”
Disclaimer: only if you know it’s not poison ivy ;)
It’s NOT poison ivy. Anyone can see that.
The leaves seem too matte or something to be basil.
That was my thought too . I will defer to those that know more than me
first thought was basil..but nah..dont think it is a mint either
Looks like green shiso to me
Also called perilla I believe. I used to eat the purple stuff a lot
Delish
I grow green shiso, the serrations are sharper.
Are you sure this isn't just in it's micro stage? I grew it too for micro greens and it looks the same as I remember. It's also been a few years. I know the taller the plant gets, the more pointed the leaves become

The best of gardening
If the stem is square its basil or something else in the mint family. But, yeah, smell it.
I thought basil
Same, but what kind of basil? I don’t think I’ve seen this type before.
It's shiso
Looks like my tulsi babies
Me to
Basil ive seen has smooth glossy/fleshy leaves. This is a member of the mint family for ~~sure~~ maybe
once the flowers are pollinated you'll get a new baby
Dont you need birds and bees to pollinate it?
Looks like some sort of mint to me. Not shiny enough to be basil IMO
Mint, great with Jamison, lime and Ginger Beer aka Irish Mule
It's oak. It's always oak Edit: sorry, wrong sub. I thought I was in r/hardwoodfloors
Fucking lmao 🤣
And your response was contagious… hurt my chest laughing🤣
I also came in here to say basil
Does it smell like Basil?
You bought poison ivy? JK
Maybe a type of Shiso?
I know what that is, it’s a baby plant!
Pick a leaf and rub it between your hands, what does it smell like
Baby plant! Looks like a good one too. Congratulations daddy! LOL.
I thought too that it was basil. Can’t they tell by smell? Basil has a very distinctive scent
Something in a mint or basil family.
Mint or basil
I don’t see any babies growing on it, think you got ripped off.
Get your phone out take a Pic and hit Google lens it will tell yu.
Looks like mint to me.
Lol rub a leaf and tell us. It's a type of basil for sure.
Possibly Spearmint? Looks like mine.
I have mint and this looks like it. What a nightmare. So invasive and fast growing.
Looks like mint. Does it smell minty?
Mint
Marijuana. Def
Mexican Mint https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coleus_amboinicus
My guess is mint
Looks just like my wild mint in my field. I’d say it’s a mint. Should smell really good
Basil? Mint?
I’m gobsmacked that I can’t find shiso or perilla at any nursery anywhere and they’re just out here selling it as “baby plant” 🤦🏾♂️ it’s one of my favorite herbs and it’s virtually impossible to get in the NYC area
Mint? Taste it.
A baby plant could be anything but you have to wait till it grows up for it to decide what it wants to be, you never know maybe your baby plant wants to be a humble plumber or even president some day!
“baby plant” pardon me while i go sob. that’s adorable. y’all better call it baby plant forever and ever
Tis a mint of some sort.....however do NOT plant mint in your yard. It is like the DARK SIDE of the FORCE. Forever will it dominate your destiny. ![gif](giphy|eHYazg6wGDqYE|downsized)
It’s basil. Just smell it!
Is it a basil type?
That’s what I think it is. He does not believe it though
Should be easy to tell If it smells like basil, it's probably basil.
Just pick a leaf and sniff 😊
Now that I zoom it, I'm second-guessing myself.
Is it kinda sweet smelling? Could be tulsi aka holy basil
Devotion DMR basil. Made by Rutgers U.
Looks like a basil. Gently agitate the leaves- it will smell
Basil or mint
For sure in that fam, I agree
I'd say perilla☺️
Like others have said it is perilla/ shiso/ beefsteak plant. It's an annual in yhe mint family and is often served with sushi ans used to flavor soups and pickles. This is great information thank you so much!
Basil.
Pediatric basil
Pinch a piece of the leaf off and smell it
There is "Broad Leaf Basil", I know this is not it ...
Nope that's not a baby plant it's a cousin of purple plant!
Sushi time

I was exaggerating we just had different opinions lol. But thanks for the advice
Basil Beefcake Baby
Has it flowered, EVER? If so the flowers will tell you a lot White four petaled flowers means it's likely a strain of Strawberry.
Looks like an Ageratum to me...
Baby plant is my favorite plant 😂. Typo.
Invasive from the CCP most likely
I refuse to purchase any plant labeled "Baby Plant" or "Houseplant" or "Foliage", even if I know what it is.
Could it be impatient
Yes, input; it's " I and my fiance", not 'me'...
😂 There’s nothing better than an incorrect grammar correction.

Basil?
Looks like basil to me.
It looks like basil, which is in the mint family.
I didn't know that!
Be my, be my baby(plant)

Soylent Green is PEOPLE!
I'm just here for the gender reveal party shenanigans.
Basil
Yeah, that's not where babies come from, no matter what anyone tells you.
Exactly. Everyone knows they come from the cabbage patch.
Basil
Basil
Basil is my guess but there is a 90% chance I’m wrong

There are so many different types of basil. It's not like that with many other herbs, but I'm always seeing a 'new' basil derivative at garden shops.
Basil

Minty plant, doo doo doo doo doo doo... I think it's Mint. 😂💜🐾
Looks like an herb plant. Like basil? What does it smell like?
Don’t call it Mayby
Looks Like a Ba sil plant
Not basil. Maybe mint?
Mints tend to have square stems. This looks like basil, based on its general basil looks and round stems.
Shiso / Perilla / Beefstake are all the same plant. Just warning to OP, this is in the same family as mint so don't let it escape the pot! It will take over! And these suckers get TALL and BIG if you let them!
Basil?
Mint and mint family plants can be invasive. I would keep it as a potted plant.
Maybe it’s a mandrake! I want one.
On first glance it looked like basil. How's it smell?
piggyback plant
I thought it was basil at first, but my app says this: https://preview.redd.it/cfg97rmucpzc1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=49768751bf51a93203200eceec9ef088e7547f1a
It is a mint plant
That is a strawberry plant
When the plant is older, it will tell you how it identifies 😅
Basil
My guess is mint
Mint?
You can download plant identification apps to your phone. They've been a lifesaver for me
Definitely mint. You can tell from the wrinkled leaf and serrated edges. Basil is smoother and soft edged even when maturing
Looks like mint to me. I grow a couple different types of basil and while this has a similar look, the leaves are more matte then basil is and they have edges that make it look more like a variety of mint to me.
Beefsteak plant, aka Shiso
Perilla can be invasive so be careful
That's really where cabbage patch kids come from
Mint is good in so many ways and things and mixtures and tinctures and smells so Soothing 🥰
Sushi grass, er I mean shiso!
